Modellers from Kent, Sussex, Surrey and South of the Thames

Introduce yourselves!

Recommended Posts

An opportunity for members to introduce themselves and their modelling interests..

Right I guess I'd better start...

I live in Horley, Surry, and currently model actively in N gauge and O gauge, with OO gauge "on hold" due to lack of space.

My modelling interests lay in "banger blue" 1980's and into 1990's Network South East operations, primarily on the south west mainline from Waterloo to Exeter (having spent the first 25 years of my life living near Chard Junction) although now living in Surrey my attention is slowly being drawn to the Brighton Mainline and what I see (and commute on) on a daily basis.

Hi my name is Rob

I live in Crowborough, East Sussex

I am a proffesional figure painter who paints model railway figures pretty exclusively now.

I am at the planning stages of a 7mm narrow gauge layout, this will be DCC controlled using a Gaugemaster controller

I am quite new to this model railway lark - finding it all very fascinating

Welcome Mr Primer, we've already discussed some of your work which is very impressive.

Look forward to seeing how your 7mm narrow gauge layout comes together - assume you've seen the several narrow gauge groups that meet "in our area" in the clubs list and also know of the South Coast O Group?

I'm less than an hour away from you and have DCC experience (although use Lenz equipment rather than the Gaugemaster one) so could well pop over if you need help and get stuck with anything that we can't discuss here or elsewhere in the specialist area on RMWeb.

I might just have to bring my sound fitted Heljan 33 with me though...

My real name is Nick and I'm from Pulborough. I too carry out the daily commute (to London Bridge), which sometimes does make me wonder why I'm into railways (especially after this evening's commute)!

My main poison is Japanese N Gauge (my layout is linked in my signature), although I do have other interests, such as LBSCR and a project in very early stages of a present-day Sussex branch line (also linked).

Ah you got caught up in the South Bermondsey signal fiasco this evening Nick?  Thankfully we'd got home about 10 minutes before National Rail app's "Horn of Doom" (as I call it) alerted me on my phone to a problem.

We commute up to London Bridge from Redhill every morning so I feel your regular pain when it comes to Southern...

Hi, I'm Alan and I'm a 7mm narrow gauge modeller. I originally hail from Battersea but now live in Merstham, Surrey. I'm original Saarf Lundin - please watch your misspellings cromptonnut!

I'm also an active member and supporter of the Surrey Area Group of the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association, helping out on the publicity stand at Narrow Gauge South West, Narrow Gauge South, Expo NG and Amberley as well as local shows such as Crawley and East Grinstead. For the first time, we also had a stand at Alexandra Palace this year.

My day job is as a self-employed managed support provider and technology strategist to small businesses; outsourced IT Manager if you will. As a result, I'm also very interested in DCC, favouring Digitrax at present.

Welcome Alan, I used to live in Brixton before moving down here into Horley so I feel your pain :)

I believe it's your group running a show in Merstham in July?  I hope to pop along as I like to support local shows even if they don't necessarily fit my current modelling plans.  Narrow gauge in some form or another definitely appeals to me, not least for the ability to run a motely collection of ropey old stock and the general 'air of neglect' that many of the industrial lines emit.  The book "Surrey Narrow Gauge Lines" sits temptingly on my bookshelf wanting me to be hit with a flash of inspiration.

Although to be honest with two layouts on the go at present any more approach to the domestic authorities for an additional building license is more likely to get me hit with a saucepan...

Hi

I am Ian.

Another commuter from Redhill station to London Bridge but luckily I have missed the usual problems this week - not looking forward to the August and Christmas London Bridge closures though.

I model in way too many scales but it's hard to resist and my other half doesn't stop me either!

Greetings SECAG from the noble realms of SWAG :D

I claim bragging rights to both.  Cornish by family descent and residence but spent most of my school years in Worthless Worthing on the sunny Costa Geriatrica.  The folks are still there having now qualified for residence by passing their 80th birthdays (in both cases by a substantial margin now).

My interests lie in the coastal operations and Sussex main lines though with a nod to the Fareham area where we lived briefly just as steam ended and diesels took over.  I commuted to school on Bil, Hal and Cor stock then to university on Cig, Big and occasionally Cep and Bep stock.  My interest in the area and in the SR as a whole remains alive and well despite the stalled build of my planned live-rail layout which has track laid and wired but is otherwise dormant for now.

Hi Gwiwer, certainly sounds like you qualify interest-wise even if you don't physically reside in the area at the moment - you do of course have a good point that there is a lot of interest in third rail layouts at the moment following the release of some very good slam door units in recent years.  I'd love to see some more modern stuff - the Southern 377's that I endure experience most mornings in N would be great for converting my layout to a more modern period; although they did the Southern 171 in N a few years back these are now rather rare.

The Southern 171 in 00 is like rocking horse poo as well.  I was very lucky indeed to find one a year after the last batch were released and not excessively priced either.  There's a fair amount of SR stuff in the collection here including a quintet of Cromptons, numerous Cep, EPB and MLV types and a 2H though I've avoided the dreaded Hornby Vep and am waiting to see what the 1960s Belle looks like when (or if) it's released.

Welcome Alan, I used to live in Brixton before moving down here into Horley so I feel your pain :)

I was born in Brixton but moved before I was old enough to remember. Battersea was my formative years, then via Thornton Heath and Croydon to Merstham. I joke that I'm on schedule to retire on the South Coast somewhere!

I believe it's your group running a show in Merstham in July?  I hope to pop along as I like to support local shows even if they don't necessarily fit my current modelling plans.

Please see shameless promotional post in appropriate thread ...

Resistance is futile. Come along to our little show where you can also buy some bits to get you going!

Right, I suppose I should follow along as well.

I live in the NW corner of the boring borough of Bexley. Originally hailing from deepest darkest Western Canada (via Newbury Park & Seven Kings) I returned permanently to the UK 10 1/2 years ago. Spent 23 years modelling banger blue and Southern early 60s whilst living abroad. Now that I live just a stone's throw from the Bexleyheath line I've put all my UK outline into storage and have been modelling BNSF and CP for the past 5 years. I've always been a contrary ####### .  A chance meeting with Roundhouse and Warbonnet of this parish more or less sealed my fate. I've got no club or society affiliations and model strictly as a lone wolf.

At the moment I have a big blue shed which houses "Essex Montana" in HO which is undergoing a revamp as I'm converting the modular layout into a quasi-permanent 2 deck layout. Originally it was to be exhibited but a combination of work commitments, health, and other personal reasons means that is no longer likely to happen. Once that is done I'll have some redundant modules which I will use to resurrect a previous modular project called Millarville. (A CP line through an Alberta foothills town) All DCC with Digitrax and JMRI controlling routes and wireless smart phone throttles.

Welcome AndrewC, like you I'm "clubless" mostly because I don't feel I can commit to attending every week and getting involved fully in constructing anything.  I tend to treat RMWeb as my "club" and one of my hopes with this area group is that we may have opportunities to meet up and help out each other where necessary and share our skills and experiences in person rather than electronically.

That's pretty much the ethos behind the area groups of the 7mm NGA. Said Association is much like all its peers, a worldwide membership organisation whose principle benefits are the bi-monthly magazine and the annual general meeting, the latter of which is frequently attended by less than 10% of the membership, despite having a very good exhibition attached to it.

RMWeb, and NGRM Online of which I am also a member, are similar models, albeit using differing communication media. The notion of area groups and occasional meetings is therefore, in my frequently forthright and often accurate opinion at least, a logical and welcome progression. After all, fun as playing trains undoubtedly is, it's even more fun in groups!

As a for instance, our area group is having a modelling day tomorrow. We hired a hall, ordered some bacon and rolls, so some 12 to 15 of us can sit down for six hours, make (rather than play) toy trains, help each other out, chew the fat and put the world to rights, and probably continue the latter over a pint across the road after we've cleared and packed up.

Hi Alan, certainly I'm not expecting to "reinvent the wheel" as it were but simply following what works elsewhere, and no doubt each group has its own particular take on things based on the members.

Certainly I know of some who just love building kits but have no room (or inclination) to actually build a layout, so every couple of months they visit other members of the group and run their stock on each other's layouts.

You never know, I might just find an excuse to bodge together a O-16.5 loco some time although O-9 also has a certain appeal for a sit-and-ride type thing...

Agreed. One of our group has an extensive 0n30 layout, so I naturally have an 0n30 train (or two) to run on it! That helps me to resist the urge to have an 0n30 layout, thankfully.

My small amount of On30 has been at his layout for quite a few years!
