Ressaldar
Hi all, a small diversion before getting on to the Heljan 47 - a Bachmann 03 to be finished as 03.162 but in green as D2162 when at Birkenhead in the late 80's. Not a lot to do except that by the time my friend bought it, there were no models available with the air tanks already fitted so a look in the odds and sods box turned up a pair, albeit too long. The other details apart from the compressor housing at the front of the righthand side, was the removal of excess lamps and handholds and the revamping of the louvres above the cupboard. I also took advantage at this stage to remove certain fittings that would be in the way when 'floating on' the chevron stripes (Fox transfers) I still have to remove the horizontal handrail on the cab rear. I have found a number of photos of D2162 on the web and also Brian Daniels detailing shots have also come to the rescue as well. Hopefully, the air tanks will be fitted this afternoon and then the primer can be applied. Scale7JB
Very nice! Is it a good kit, or very well built with extra detail? JB.
Rambler
Whenever I've looked at these 03/04 models, the cab doors have seemed a mite unconvincing - I bet the real ones didn't fit that well! I'd be tempted to fret them out and fit (badly or otherwise, depending on the prototype) new ones. Alternatively, cute weathering might achieve the same result. Ressaldar
Hi JB & Rambler, It started as a standard Sang Cheng model built for Bachmann, left in the brass. in the photos above, I have only added the 'cupboard' and re-positioned the horn, which on looking at again, needs to be higher up than I have put it - I used the existing hole, so not a problem. As far as the doors are concerned, I'll leave them alone and see what the weathering can produce. regards Mike
alcazar
They are quite nice models aren't they? How have Bachmann done the louvres?
Ressaldar
Hi Alcazar, nice to hear from you, hope you are keeping well. They are nice models, well built as well. The louvres seem to have been pressed out - as in real life - all I have done is pressed those that are not required back to the 'flat' and pushed Squadron putty into the slots and then fioled/sanded it flat, it will be interesting to see what the surface looks like after the primer is applied (just got to fit the air tanks first, back to drawingboard for plan B for the tanks, plan A did not look right) I'll keep you posted regards Mike
Ressaldar
Hi all, no progress on the 03 this week, while I think of a Plan B - so I thought I'd respray my Heljan 47, something that had been in the 'wings' since Telford last year. It started life as a plain blue type and all I've done is blank off the boiler flue and fitted headlights - the lighthouse bulbs arrived yesterday and will hopefully be fitted tomorrow and then it's just waiting for the nameplates, which were ordered from Guilplates earlier in the week. The weathering is my usual approach of Railmatch frame and roof dirt and Tamiya weathering gunmetal, soot and oil stain. regards Mike
marsa69
That looks spot on! I want one

Ressaldar
Hi all, at last got round to finding something suitable to make the air tanks - two identical ex SECR chimneys from old kits. I spent an enjoyable afternoon filing them to shape etc. The cabside transfers are from John Peck at Precision Decals, a great service yet again. The chevrons on the back of the cab are painted, the masking took an age, but I'm happy with the results, those around the bonnet are from Fox. just some judicious weathering to do tomorrow, then back to Earl of Mount Edgcombe (0-6-2t ex PD&SWR/LSWR) to be finished in Southern green and then its sister, the 0-6-0t A S Harris. regards Mike
alcazar
It does look nice, but whatever shade of green is that? Is it close to the original, or has the camera/lighting rendered it wrong? It looks almost olive drab.
Ressaldar
Hi Alcazar, The paint is Railmatch 301, which I must admit, looks a bit drab. I took the photos this morning, outside in the sun, no clouds at all. Hopefully, the weathering will do it's job, we'll see. regards Mike
alcazar
Is it meant to be faded green?
Ressaldar
Hi Alcazar, in the photos that I have it does not appear to be 'standard green' and it was a repaint over railblue, so perhaps there might have been problems at the time, I don't know. Working in Birkenhead docks might have had something to do with it as well. regards Mike
alcazar
Cheers, I've seen some weird colours on 03's from VERY faded green, to NSE toothpaste colours. Look forward to your weathered version. Do you have any photos of the real thing?
Pugsley
Isn't 301 Sherwood Green? That was the lighter colour used on 47s and the cabs on class 14s. I found this photo: http://www.preservedshunters.co.uk/psh_zoom.php?img=0999000018090 It is close to standard loco green, but a bit lighter and a bit more blue, IMO. Michael Delamar
Do you have any photos of the real thing? theres one here http://jandjcottrell.fotopic.net/p51014199.html Mike
brian daniels
You have done a nice job but it should be Railmatch 300 Standard Green and not 301 Sherwood Green.
Ressaldar
Hi Alcazar and Michael, Firstly, Michael, many thanks for the photo, not one that I had come across before and it's very clean. Alcazar, I've now 'toned down' the green (a few spots of coal black in satin varnish) and applied the frame dirt and roof dirt and then 'cleaned' the windows the rest of the weathering will be done tomorrow. Sorry for the delay in replying, but the 'response notification' system still seems to be down. regards Mike
alcazar
In one of the shots of the real thing, the green almost looks bright enough to be S.R. malachite green Also, the chimney on the real thing appears shorter than on other members of the class. Does anyone know why the Birkenhead shunter's horn was turned to face downwards?
brian daniels
The horn never used to droop!
Ressaldar
Hi Brian and Alcazar, yes, the green is wrong, but hopefully, with the 'blackened varnish' it has brought it back to something like the green that it should/might have been. In the earlier photos that I took, the green seems to change quite dramatically between flash, partial sun and full sun so I'll se what happens after the Tamyia toning tomorrow. regards Mike
Ressaldar
Hi all, I've now finished the weathering and as an experiment, taken the photos on two different cameras, at the same time and needless to say, have come up with two different greens and my eyes are probably looking at yet another shade! The first four taken with a Fuji S5500 the other two with a Canon 450D regards Mike
Ressaldar
Hi all, have now started the first of two Hawthorne Leslie locos (Agenoria kits - they are just great) an 0-6-2t to be followed by an 0-6-0t - and they will be in the correct shade of green! I'm using ABCgearboxes with Maxon motors, so they will run well, albeit perhaps a little OTT. The 0-6-2t will be finished as Southern 757 Earl of Mount Edgcomb and the 0-6-0t will be as Southern 756 A S Harris (I built one a few years ago, with a Mashima motor and Branchlines gearbox and had an offer made for it that I could not refuse - hence the rebuild) Updates to follow shortly. regards Mike
Ressaldar
Hi all, finally finished the 0-6-2t.......... another very satisfying Agenoria kit, lets hope that Pete Stamper keeps the production going. regards Mike
