Thanks Rug - well, they say a large collection of Deltic photos is the sign of a miss-spent youth and I've uploaded about 150 on this thread (not bad for a total of only 22 locos!) but I've still got a few left (but not many more pre-TOPS)... 55005 departs Newcastle on 8th March 1975 This was a lucky shot on 27th December 1975 as the ash carrier vessel 'Bessie Surtees' was heading upriver to collect another pile of waste ash from Stella South power station. The Deltic was too far away to identify at the time but I reckon it must be 55013 'The Black Watch' by the size of the nameplate 55018 comes off the bridge on 29th November 1975 - I didn't make a note of the Class 40 on the right 55014 at the same spot in October 1981. I have a feeling it could be 55014 and the lower part of the nameplate is obscured by the top rail of the bridge! Also 14 worked the 11.40 Edinburgh-Kings X on that date and the angle of the sun is about right for 1.30pm or so. Popular Post 67A
Hi all, My mate Andy put me on to this treasure of a topic, fabulous photos which really jog the old grey matter. I was born in Glasgow and lived on the south west side until 1972 and although I did see the odd Deltic in Queen St. Station on rare occasions it was very much the order of the day to travel to Edinburgh to cop those wonderful machines. At about the age of 14 or 15 one lovely summer day without any thought other than copping some elusive Deltics I boarded my trusty bike and cycled to Edinburgh via the quieter roads, I decided to head for St.Margarets shed first where you had to cross the main line via a simple red/green indication lamp system due to the proximity of Calton tunnel, I started crossing on a green light then got distracted by a roar only to realise I was in its path! D9000 was charging south as I charged off the crossing to safety. Luckily no one saw what an idiot I was other than the train crew. I then went to Waverley Station for a while followed by the main event - Haymarket MPD. Deltic's galore! I can't honestly remember how many but at least 7 or 8. I had no trouble getting round the depots and as the day drew on I decided to make for home. I arrived back about 11pm with my parents beside themselves with worry, we were not on the phone so could not let them know I was okay. I was given the third degree and my dad completely disbelieved my story, more chastisement followed then I was sent to my room (not really a punishment it was full with a model railway). My dad then ransacked my saddlebag and I heard him say to my mother 'that little sod's been telling the truth, look at the entries in his spotting book'. I had no idea how far I had cycled until I got a car at 18 and travelled the same route to find it was 55 miles each way! No wonder I had a sore you know what. I don't have many photos of Deltics sadly but here are a few from those early days, please excuse the quality - cheap camera - cheap film and scanned from old prints! D9021. A common sight at Haymarket at this spot outside the shed was a Deltic with the nose doors open! D9006. During Haymarket's rebuilding a Deltic could often be found nudging out at this rebuilt shed building. Same day as above photo with demolition going on two Deltics brighten the scene. D9000. The one that nearly had me! Ready for the off 9017 awaits its next turn. BRC&W Type 2 D5306 keeps company. I was not keen on the demise of the 'D' prefix, I was even less keen on the introduction of telephone numbers, sorry TOPS. Same day from the opposite side 9017 sits in the sun. Thanks for bringing back some treasured memories. 23

Trev52A
More at Low Fell, all from 1975.. This loading gauge at the Team Valley Trading Estate exchange sidings has appeared already, but not as dilapidated as in this view on 12th April 1975, as 55006 heads by with the up 'Flying Scotsman' The same loco diverted to the slow lines heading north on 22nd June 1975 55017 speeds past the remnants of an earlier derailment on the old crossing on 16th March 1975. It appears to be a Spanish vehicle with 'Tranfesa' branding 55002 leans to the curve approaching Low Fell from the south in the evening sun on 5th May 1975 Trevor

The nose dent looks like 55022 and by the time 55s were used regularly on these workings 55004 would have had a yellow panel not dominos. Trev52A
Some pre-TOPs views at Newcastle. (A couple of these have already appeared in the 'Human side of the railway' topic) D9012 crosses from Gateshead on 24th March 1970. The number definitely had the 'D' prefix although some ref. books say it had been removed the previous month. The same loco, with a proud driver, on 5th March 1970. Close examination shows the 'D' still in place on the rear number, at least. D9020 at the south end of the station on 24th March 1970 At the other end of the station on 5th march 1970 with 9011 on the left and D9000 arriving on an Aberdeen-Kings Cross train. Here's something you don't see every day - a diesel loco having its water tanks topped up - 9001 on 20th May 1970 Nameplate and regimental badge of 9006 at Newcastle on 29th May 1970 Trevor

Kev. not 100% it is 004 iirc there were two deltics on pennines that day as well as lord nelson in steam ( which i believe got into problems through standage ) so may have noted the wrong one on the pic list .aircons were infrequent visitors at that time usually on a Newcastle turn at weekends .this would not of been the usual Deltic turn (08.05 ex york - limestreet and return ) as had gone up to snap the aforementioned kettle going east after lunch and this was heading west .

Maybe work was being done on the stabling point, because a 47 and a Peak are behind the Deltic. The date of this one is interesting - renumbered into TOPS the previous month, and already with a domino headcode. Previously I thought only D9009 had missed out the TOPS w/ headcode phase. Were there any others?

There was a manhole cover you could lift to access the water hose, similar to the one in the pic. On at least one occasion I couldn't get the hose to connect onto the solebar connection, so stuck it to the bodyside hatch instead. Paul J. Edited May 3, 2020 by Swindon 123 Add name. RMweb Gold StuAllen Posted May 6, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 6, 2020 Just been moving photos around on my PC and found these from when deltics visited the Bluebell Railway in April 2015. I don't remember seeing them pre-preservation, but I do remember getting one in my first Lima train set for Christmas when I was 6 or 7 - the deltic was green with maroon coaches, it also came with a low loader that the coach would fit on. That model made quite an impression, that was one of my favourite toys growing up, and I still have the loco in the loft 40ish years later
stewartingram
So much more stylish & tidy in the original green. The blue was just uninspiring. Funny that blue is my favourite colour otherwise though! Stewart

RMweb Gold The Pilotman Posted June 6, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 6, 2020 (edited) It’s back to the summer of 1998 and the Saturday spectacle of D9000 working 1S87, the 1126 Ramsgate to Edinburgh as far as Birmingham New Street. These pictures were taken on different days at South Stoke between Goring & Streatley and Cholsey stations. On both occasions the train was running at high speed on the down main line and these were the best results from a lot of attempted panning shots. RMweb Gold The Pilotman Posted June 7, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 7, 2020 (edited) I don't know how many times D9000 worked 1S87 during the summer of 1998 but I was able to photograph it on four separate occasions. Two pictures were posted yesterday, one of the others appeared on page 3 of this thread and here is the last one. This was taken (on railway duty) near Reading West Junction. The rear of the train is passing over the notorious Cow Lane bridge; once one of the most commonly-struck low bridges on the WR and a well known Reading bottleneck. The train is on the down main line with the in and outgoing lines for Reading Depot in the foreground. RMweb Gold The Pilotman Posted June 7, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 7, 2020 And a final shot of D9000 leaving Reading on the up main with Hertfordshire Rail Tours "The Cross Country Deltic" on April 13th 1997. The tour ran from Euston to Paddington via Birmingham and Bristol with the Deltic used throughout.
