KalKat
I know Impact .... I used to work in the garage , in Ealing Prior to that time, the first I saw of Impact was when they took over a small shop my dad had used as a base for his fledgling business; there were two Escort Mk1s outside parked nose to tail ..... yup, you guessed - the rear of the front car was pushed in and the nose of the one behind! RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted May 1, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 1, 2014 Sazzle informs me there's a dentist in Newton Abbot by the name of El-Nasher. There was a driving school in Birmingham called Absolute. They had roof signs with a big L at the end, so it read Absolute.L - which it was if you got stuck behind in rush hour... RMweb Gold Huw Griffiths Posted May 2, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 2, 2014 Around North London there was, and may still be:- The Impact School of Motoring Did they offer crash courses? Haven't got a clue ... . Meanwhile, in the Hendon area, a websearch yields details of one driving school who definitely offer "intensive courses": http://www.speedwelldrivingschool.com/ A number of years back, when I was visiting York, I noticed a car with signage for the "Kamikaze School of Motoring". Despite the "subtle" name, I suspect that any local budding "boy racers" might have been in for a slight disappointment - as the vehicle in question wasn't some exotic, fire breathing, flying machine. If I recall correctly, I think it was actually some very small, very bland, "shopping trolley" - a white Nissan Micra, or something very similar. I also haven't got a clue what this driving school were really like - as I'd already passed my test (in Oxford - a place which, for me, definitely failed to live up to its "cyclist friendly" image). There was a driving school in Birmingham called Absolute. They had roof signs with a big L at the end, so it read Absolute.L - which it was if you got stuck behind in rush hour... I'm not sure this would have been too much fun for any learner driver in any city - far too many impatient sociopaths in their powered battering rams, on the same gridlocked roads, "offering" unsolicited (and decidely unfriendly) "advice". I'd also guess that a number of these bullies would probably have been "helpful" enough to supplement their "guidance" with some particularly charming hand signals - to "aid understanding", of course. Anyway, that's enough of that. Huw.
JZ
Codfather is a fairly common name, at least two within 10 miles of me. Chish & Fips, just up the road in Radstock and Midsomer Norton used to have a Frying Scotsman. At one time I had a folder with photo's of pun business names, unfortunatley it was lost when my old PC crashed. One of my favourites was T.Bone, Butcher. RMweb Gold big jim Posted May 3, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2014 I don't think this Warley trader's amusement for me was intentional. wombatofludham
One of Anglia TV's first weather presenters was Michael Hunt, who, obviously gave strict instructions to Anglia's in vision continuity announcers to say his name in full. However, David Hamilton, later to become a dj on the radio, either didn't get the instruction or decided to sail close to the wind and would introduce him as Mike, apparently much to the annoyance of Mr Hunt, and bizarrely, allegedly to the complete bemusement of Anglia's management, who must have led sheltered lives. Ozexpatriate
There is an establishment known as ###### (Boris)'s Corner Saloon and Cafe on the outskirts of the Portland metro. The original location of this establishment (at the intersection of Stafford and Borland Roads) continues to be known as Wankers Corner and is shown as such on maps. The name is also perpetuated in ###### (Boris)'s Country Store. The pub, variously a 'local', biker bar and meat/meet market was so named as an inside joke the locals didn't get. They are however serious about their beer. It's all pretty funny really.
