Morning David

That last picture is absolutely stunning.  When did Derwenthaugh close?

Looking at the TY signal I assume it was close to low fell and probably had all traces removed by the garden festival

Just off the Newcastle to Carlisle line, much of it went foer the garden festival and of course the Metrocentre shops.

The cokeowrks closed in 1986, this Wikipedia article gives brief details.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derwenthaugh_Coke_Works#:~:text=The works were closed in,gradually cleared and de-contaminated.

C6341 shows a Brush 200hp 0-4-0DE, possibly ex Parkgate judging by the shape of the back windows - do you have any more photos of this? I wasn't aware of one these working at Derwnthaugh.

I've had a look and haven't got any more photos of the loco.  According to the IRS Industrial Locomotives 1979 Raine & Co Ltd, Delta Iron and Steel Works, Blaydon had 3 0-4-0 dieslel electrics shunters.

They are shown as:

Brush 339 /Beyer Peacock 7946 of 1961

Brush 340 /Beyer Peacock 7947 of 1961 (dismantled by 1979)

Brush 443 /Beyer Peacock 7873  of 1962

There are three photos by Murray Liston on flickr:

I hope this is useful.

J657, a really nice photo with the incidental details - the car, open boot and bonnet, garage door windows etc. And the dog on the lawn.

Given the proximity of the house to the tracks, and the fact that double glazing was probably unheard of at that time, I’ll bet the occupants could hear the point motors from indoors every time they were swung over.

Lakeside Fairburn 4MTT as CR 2085 Aug 75 J4604

The purists may moan & groan about authenticity,  but that is a lovely livery, and it sits well on an already impressive looking machine.

Good evening, David. That is a fantastic set of photo’s from around Derwenthaugh just west of Gateshead, in January, 1984. C6344, of 37068, is a most excellent shot of the 37.

The black and white photo’s from around Grantham in about 1950/1, are a superb selection. JVol3176, at Grantham Barrowby Road Junction, with a A1 on a down express passenger train, in c1950, is a splendid photo’, and the A1 is seen to be hauling a most interesting selection of carriages.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s at Southside, on the ECML in Northumberland, with one showing the Whittle colliery exchange sidings. C5877, at Southside with a  Class 37 on a down oil train, in November, 1982, is a well composed photo’ of the train.

The photo’s from the East Midlands at Stanton Ironworks, Stanton Gate on the Erewash Valley line and near Sutton Bonnington on the Midland north of Loughborough, are a superb selection. J449, at Stanton Gate, with an ex-LMS Ivatt Class 4 2-6-0 down empty coal train, in mist, in April, 1966, is a most atmospheric photo’ by your Dad.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

I thought east coast HST units were class 254?

In theory but not always in reality.

I think by 1983 there was a lot more movement of power cars and less emphasis on keeping them in sets with the coaches.

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s at Grantham. J5617, of a Class 55, on the down Flying Scotsman, in January, 1977, is a superb and most atmospheric photo’ by your Dad.

The photo’s of Bentley, between Manningtree and Ipswich on the Great Eastern Mainline, in May and June 1975, are a superb selection. The last photo’ of a Class 47, on a Norwich to Liverpool St. service, in June, 1975, is an excellent and well composed shot.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of Switzerland at Kleine Scheidegg where trains leave for the Jungfrau, on the 12th August, 1991. C16329, of WAB BDeh4/4, is a stunning photo’, and how small the train looks in the middle of the scenery.

The extra, odd man out photo’ of Grantham, with a Class 55, on the 08.10 Newcastle to Kings Cross service, in September, 1971, is an excellent and well composed shot. The colours look very good to my old eyes.

And the photo’s from around Gonalston crossing are a superb selection. J5047, of a Class 47, on a down oil train, in January, 1976, is a most atmospheric composition in the low January sunlight and cloud.

With warmest regards,

Rob.
