I didn't mean to start a major discussion! And my comment "never again" was related to the temperature of the sea. Give me Durres in Albania for swimming.

But to contribute to the resorts, from Cardiff a very popular resort was Weston super Mud. Miles of beach - and that was just looking for the sea when the tide was out.

There’s some fascinating history surrounding seaside holidays. I spent the summer between my GCSEs and A-levels researching excursion trains from the West Riding, thanks to a HMRS grant. They even published my article.

Part of the project involved recording oral history from those who went on these excursions. Sadly all have since passed away and so that research is the only way that their story was captured. One of the valuable things about this thread (apart from the sheer delight of the wealth of pictures) is the knowledge that is being recorded and (RMWeb permitting) retained. Long may it continue…!

I think oral history is very underrated. I carried out a Heritage lottery project to record the memories of those who used the Portland branch in Dorset. Some talked about holidays , some about wartime, some about growing up and using the railway to travel and as a playground. Some fascinating stories were collected. Sorry if I've posted this before. The film is the last special in 1965, I interviewed a fireman on one of the 2mt tanks, you will hear him speak. I edited the sound bites and put it all together. There is also a display connected with the project in our local museum ,more information in the link below.

Next project is to interview my mother about growing up on an Essex farm during war time and submitting to the Essex records office.

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of the London Tilbury and Southend at Laindon in the 1970’s. C3715, of track renewal work, on the 12th March, 1978, is a fascinating study, and how times have changed. The workers would all have to be wearing Hi Vis jackets etc.

The photo’s from near to Nottingham at Sneinton junction, are an excellent selection. C3894, of 25211, on a westbound freight, in June, 1978, is a superb three quarter portrait shot of the locomotive.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Scarby or Brid, shirley?

Cleethorpes if you lived in what is now South Yorkshire, the mining area around Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster, and up as far as Wakefield and Leeds.

Used to be loads of excursions.

I'm scanning old family photos at the moment

Snap, so am I.  Some are mine, some are my father's and some my wife's.  These tend to be the easy ones.  There are others taken by sundry relatives and friends and, whilst either my wife or I may know who, of the where and when we haven't a clue.  Even the who isn't always easy.

I started it because I felt it was important to have a digitised record of our family history.  One day my wife and I will not be here and, although we both hope this won't be for many years, once we go our knowledge goes with us unless we keep a record.  Our eldest daughter (and my brother) are the family archivists and she has several photographs of what we assume are our Victorian ancestors.  Unfortunately we have no names.  "I would love to know who they are," she has said to me.

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of Switzerland, at Rapperswil, on the 31st July and the 1st August, 1988. C9824, of a Südostbahn, Re4/4iii, 42, on a Konstanz Rigi Express, on the 31st July, 1988, is a splendid three quarter portrait shot of the locomotive.

The old family photo’ of Pride of the Yare, on the River Trent, at Nottingham circa 1950, is a really lovely shot, and there’s is, as you have stated, much of interest for modellers.

The photo’s of the Stray at Harrogate in 1965 and 1966, are a superb selection. The last photo’ of LMS Class 5, 45061, on a Harrogate to Kings Cross service, in July, 1966, is a most excellent photo’ and shows a typical Stanier Black 5 near to the end of steam.

With warmest regards,

Rob.
