Hi, Dave. I like today’s photo’s which start at Victoria and go via Lewes to Brighton. All are full interest and the Lewes photo’ is a real gem. It’s not very often you come across a photo’ from 1951 in colour.

At Brighton, in J6636, of the Childrens Pleasure beach railway, in September, 1979, the curves are a bit sharp, and I’m not sure you’d be able to reproduce them in a model. ;)

With warmest regards,

Rob.

LGB and Lego have pretty sharp curves in their trackage systems...

Hi, Dave. I like the Grantham photo’s which are all full of interest and show some of the changes with the railway at Grantham over those years. In J7026, with a class 55 on a down express in July, 1980, you can see how the end was getting close for the Deltics with the nameplate missing, and fairly well weathered appearance.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

J7026 - another degree of difficulty in the 'Identify the Deltic' game... :)

As a novice I'll hazard a guess based on the appearance of the number - 55 011?

Yes it’s 55011. It’s nameplate was removed on one side -supposedly for safe keeping IIRC - for its final months in service.

The mystery location I think is on Sankt Augustin Way (which I guess wasn't there when the picture was taken) looking from Westgate due west, with Old Wharf Road bridge just out of view to the left. If you look on streetview the cabinet and signal are still there, the signal has been modified somewhat. The train is going away from us if it is the down service.

Regards,

Dave

Likewise (for any modellers) 55 010, from December 1979, in that case due to damage.

The nameplate came off 55011 whilst running round at Hull Paragon. The plate became lodged in the side of a GUV as it went through the shunt release . The plate ended up in the stores at BG until collected by staff from York.

The nameplate on 55011 was missing for only a short period in 1980 as it was re-united shortly afterwards - unlike 55010 which never had it's 2nd nameplate refitted.

Hi, Dave. I like the Battersby and Monkton cokeworks photo’s which are full of interest, and the 143’s which were so new at the time are now so old and about to be withdrawn from the Welsh services that I believe they are serving their final days on.

Monkton Cokeworks looks fascinating and I haven’t seen much of it before, so it’s a whole new world for me. The tracks were latterly, as seems to have been the case, at collieries, and it seems cokeworks too, in a most deplorable condition.

In particular C7235 of Monkton coke works looking  south along the Bowes Railway, on the 12th October, 1985, conveys so well the complex of colliery buildings and some of the track layout which is crying out to be modelled.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Some more trains at Grantham today, from 1971 to 1981.

I'm not quite sure exactly where in Grantham Dad stood to take the last one of today's photos, it was taken in the morning, probably between 11am and noon. I thought I knew Grantham well...

A shot of 55011, on my Flickr site, taken at Finsbury Park on 5th July 1980, showing the damage done to 55011 by the "Hull Incident".

Hi, Dave. I like the Barrow and Dalton in Furness photo’s from the Cumbrian Coast line. They are all full of interest, and in C8741, at Barrow, on the 6th, August, 1987, on the cab front of the class 108 DTSL, 54196, you can clearly see how much yellow paint has been removed after being hit by the air pipe jumping around. It was a fairly common problem on the blue square units.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Barrow Class 108 Barrow to Lancaster 6th Aug 87 C8740  What is that yellow car? At first I thought it was a mini, but....

It doesn't look like the rear window will stay attached to the body for long! Is it some sort of home rebuild?

Think you will find yellow car was a mini club man estate

Hi, Dave. I like the Carlisle and Kingmoor photo’s. They are full of interest and in the second one at Carlisle, C7959, with 86204, on the Midland Scot, from Birmingham to Edinburgh and Glasgow, on the 26th, August, 1986, unless I’m much mistaken, I can only see one first class carriage, the second air con Mk2.

The last photo’ at Kingmoor, on the 9th, May, 1987, with 25903 and 47587, show how the track dips down to where the diesel fuelling point is and 47587.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

It's a Mini Clubman estate. Tht was the longest version of the old Mini combining the 'Cortina'-like extended front with the (van-based) estate body.

Thanks Bernard

I know the clubman, but was surprised by the raking of the rear doors, I don't remember that.

All the best

Paul
