Hi, Dave. I like the photo’s of Morpeth, which as always are so full of interest and nostalgia. In particular I like C6987, of an HST on an up express on the 25th July, 1985. It’s hard to believe that they will soon no longer be working on such services.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Just going back to the Greatford photos, this is the view from the footplate on that streach of line, heading north between Tallington and Greatford level crossings on 55013 working 1L44 the 1605 KX -York. 11th September 1981. ECML-18.jpg.22409a7f402ef8a2c4d6cc482555428a.jpg

Also below my old route map showing Greatford LC was monitored with CCTV by Tallington LC, if I remember rightly.

Indeed! Apart from the Trans-pennine workings, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a picture of a Deltic on only seven coaches before. Coincidentally, one of my trains home yesterday (IC2157 from Köln to Gera) was a BR101 loco with only four coaches. Went like the clappers, it did.

I can't give you any photos, and probably no numbers either, but we had the occasional 'Deltic' at Cambridge, on the 'Cambridge Buffet Express", whilst I was still at school. This would be in the early 60s period, when the train was a standard 7-coach mk1 formation. It certainly wasn't a daily occurrence, but it appears that the CBE was used as a running-in turn for locos by 34G? We had various locosappear on there, such as the odd Deltic, 47, 40 and occasional prototype. D0280 was a regular for a short while but I saw others on it too.

You remember correctly, I have been in Tallington gate box. When I was there Marholm was closed.

Where is the "Jealous" button?

I travelled from Cambridge for several years from the end of the sixties and never had anything more exciting than a 47 instead of the normal 31 on the CBE. MInd you there was that very nice buffet car with very nice staff.

And lovely Talyllyn photos today.

Hi, Dave. I like the Talyllyn Railway photo’s. In C4787, at Dolgoch, with Hughes number 3 Sir Haydn, on the 10th, August, 1979, you can see what looks like a bright green jacket surrounding the lamp. I wonder what was going on there?

The Grantham to Nottingham photo’s are so full of interest, and in J7380, at Bottesford, with  20165 and another, on an up freight, in May, 1981, you have what is a most atmospheric view which I doubt could ever be replicated on a model.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Completely agree - plus, of course, diversions between Peterborough and Hitchin, the first of which was recorded as early as 1961, when the main line was blocked at Offord. There are even some references in old Modern Railways of Deltic-hauled trains being diverted via Chatteris, St. Ives and Histon. It's rather surprising, actually, that there is no other record on www.napierchronicles.com of another Deltic at Cambridge until D9013 in March 1968. Like you, I'm certain that they did reach Cambridge on the CBE before that date, in addition to annual diversions. Unfortunately, very few people recorded such events prior to the end of steam. If anyone does have any detailed records I'm sure that Paul Bettany would be extremely pleased to be able to add them to the database (contact details on the website).

The yard, presumably with materials for the railway, looks interesting and different. Even if only because it is surrounded by green fields, at least from what we can see here.

It was surrounded by green fields.

I can't remember whether it was a  railway compound for storage or whether the disused trackbed was just used to reach the storage area by another business.

Corkickle incline. Seems perfectly reasonable to haul hazardous (?) chemicals in multiple tank wagon quantities up and down a rope-worked incline! Anyone know what the gradient was?

According to Wikipedia, the incline was anywhere between 1:5.2 and 1:6.6

Hi, Dave. I like the Cumbrian photo’s. All so full of interest and nostalgia of the ordinary railway, with no big glamour trains in sight. I particularly like C8407 at Dalston with class 37, 37025, on the 22nd April, 1987. Just how the railway was on the day to day basis, and some good detail to model from.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Not quite.  Speaking as somebody who used to deal with daily BRUTE counts and balances (just like rolling stock balances including separately controlling those in special circuit workings) they were in fact -

British Rail Universal Trolley Equipment

And there had been a proposal for a specially-designed equivalent for use by Sealink - the Continental Universal Nautical Trolley, but there was some concern about the acronym and it was never built.

David, many thanks for the images of the Grantham - Nottingham line. I must admit, that 'back in the day' I found that traveling along this line was tedious with little of interest as we made our way from Brum to Grantham for a days spotting on the ECML and the anticipation of seeing 'Dellies' hammering through! This was the early 1970's so we had missed seeing Gresley's finest by a decade!!

I now wish we had paid more attention to the really interesting infrastructure at the time!

Thanks again, Andy
