Hi, Dave. I like the Southern photo’s which are full of interest and show how the railway crossed the Thames by the various bridges and viaducts. Along with the stations there’s so much of historical interest in all of the photo’s, and in J6488, at Cannon Street, in June, 1979, with class 415 EMU’s, you can see how stark that the station was back then.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

40 years ago I would occasionally do a week or two covering the SM’s post at Cannon, if Fred was on leave. In the peaks it was fearsomely busy, but off-peak it was as quiet as the grave, with a handful of trains per hour, and not many passengers on each. And it was closed at weekends.

Hi, Dave. I like the Stranraer Harbour and Troon photo’s, and they are full of interest. I particularly like the first photo’ of 47406 which is a fine portrait of the 47. It looks very smart complete with silver buffers and white pipe work.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

C8452: interesting to see what looks like an engineer on the bridge wing (the C/E with a boiler suit that white!) and another, not so clean, at the foot of the ladder.

I once got chucked off the bridge for wearing a boiler suit!

C8839 is that a Network SouthEast sticker on the side of the first DMU car?

I think it is indeed a Network South East sticker.

NSE had 10 2 car sets of Class 104 used on the Gospel Oak to Barking line, I believe they also worked out of Paddington and Marylebone.

I assume that this set had been transferred to the north west to work out its last days.

Hi, Dave. I like the Bowes Railway photo’s which are most fascinating. It’s not everyday you see wagons being hauled up an incline. C8577, of the rope guides, shows detail that will be of interest to anyone wishing to make an accurate model.

The Cumbrian Coast line photo’s are interesting and nostalgic. In the first photo’ at Bootle, Cumbria, the class 47 on a down empty coal train, on the 6th, August, 1987, makes quite a sight as it powers the train through the station  with a flurry of exhaust.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

You could almost be waiting for an A4 to appear (Apart from the date and some modern signage.).

Thanks for another nice selection.

I was thinking the same thing!!

Another picture full of atmosphere and detail.....

Hi, Dave. The Darlington to Tyne Yard photo’s are most interesting and once more nostalgic. I particularly like the first one of 08867 and 37003 on the 21st February, 1987. What a great sight the 08 makes looking so clean.

The double exposure is most interesting. I know a keen gardener and railway enthusiast who would really enjoy that photo’.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

'Winning' always a winner for me and still a great location for photos. Class 56s in LL BR Blue always look great, and now a distant memory.

This class 66 at Winning also has a livery which is a distant memory.

Thanks again for sharing your B&T photos.

Hi, Dave. I like the photo’s of Winning, which are most interesting, and there are some good views of class 56’s. In particular the first photo’ is a fine portrait of 56116, on a coal train from Lynemouth to Blyth power station, on the 6th July, 1987.  Interesting to see how the surrounds to the cab windows and grills have all been picked out in what appears  to be white paint.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

C4088 looks like 55 014 to me, David.

I'm not sure about J6142 either. At a higher magnification the numbers look too rounded for it to be 47 511 - BICBW. 511 was, also, a Western Region loco and, whilst "foreign" Brush 4s weren't all that rare on the ECML earlier in the decade (when depots would tend to use anything that they had to hand), by 1978 it would be very unusual to see what was, then, a Landore loco.

It is not 511, 511 still had glass fitted in the head codes at this time. The plated panels is in the York style with the holes in the lower position.

Back to Bottesford today, on the Grantham to Nottingham line.

In the 1970s and early 1980s there were quite a lot of loco hauled trains as well as the local dmu service from Nottingham to Skegness via Grantham.

The Class 45 in the last photo on a diverted St Pancras to Nottingham service, which ran from Kings Cross, was very unusual.  On the day the photo was taken all the Midland trains were diverted to run from Kings Cross as the Midland line was blocked.

J7535 is going to be 25069 and 25081......both 25/1 body styles. Both worked a Leicester Skeggy 1st August 1981. Both vac braked.

25245 and 25060 worked a Derby Yarmouth on the 8th but both dual brakes so don't fit the profile either.....the front loco looks to have a '9' at the end of the number which fits '069.

Info from Alan Bayliss 25 Info site. Another great time capsule thanks David!
