They were the Scottish green and cream Mk1s. I assume they were fitted with the window bars in Scotland. The trains were run on the S&C with 4MTT 2-6-4T 80079 to train more steam crews and they were available for public use. David

In particular the box van in SIMG_0351, on the 25th November, 2005, at Appleby, is either an ex LNER van or an ex RCH van. It’s the doors which are slightly confusing me. They don’t seem LNER. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 1, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 1, 2019 Hi, Dave. I like the ECML photo’s to the north and south of Grantham. In particular, J6139, at Barkston, in May, 1978, with HST 254014 on an up express. It really is a beautifully composed photograph, and shows how magnificent the HST’s were. Just BR’s best ever train. So sad to see them go..... With warmest regards, Rob. 1
RMweb Premium corneliuslundie Posted August 2, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 2, 2019 Interesting that that# salt van had wooden underframes so late. Possibly wooden rather than steel because of the corrosive effects of salt? Jonathan
RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted August 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 2, 2019 Photos today taken on a trip on a special train from Hexham to Inverness on 15th October 1988. I rode on the train from Cramlington to Avemore and back. The first part of the journey was in cloud and mist but as we neared our destination the sun broke through to give a glorious sunny day while we were at Aviemore. There was time for a ride on the Strathspey Railway - photos of that will appear in due course. The trip was organised by the Whitley Bay Horticultural Society - they ran a number in the 1980s. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 2, 2019 Hi, Dave. I like the photo’s of the special train from Hexham to Inverness on 15th October, 1988. They all full of interest. In the last one, C11574, at Aviemore, with 47602, the 47 makes a fine sight, but I’d forgotten just how incredibly small the running numbers were in that livery. I’m sure BR were trying to stop train spotters from carrying out their hobby! Anyhow, I’m looking forward to seeing the Strathspey Railway photo’s. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted August 3, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 3, 2019 Staying in Scotland today with a look at Glasgow Central in February 1990. They were taken on the day of a trip to the Glasgow Exhibition. But before the photos a quick note about this thread. I am now working on photos taken in the early 90s, though there are still some older ones to use. By the late 80s/early 90s slide film had improved a lot, both in the accuracy of colour rendition and sharpness. However it still ages quite badly, so some slides will have a magenta/purple cast which I can't always remove. Some also seem to turn green. At the moment if any look unduly brightly coloured, or lighter or darker than usual that is my fault. I hurt my shoulder recently so have been working on a laptop, which I find more comfortable but which isn't as well calibrated for colour as my desktop set up. Now for the photos. RMweb Premium melmerby Posted August 3, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 3, 2019 Nice photos of Glasgow Central. It's a station I like, although a very infrequent visitor, it doesn't seem to have been messed up too much by modernisation. 1
caradoc
Really appreciate the Glasgow Central photos, because at that time I was a South Electric Controller for BR ScR (my favourite job of all my railway career), basically responsible for all services at Central except the Inter-City trains, and for managing the fleets used. I hope everything was running well when you were there David ! Thanks again.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 3, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 3, 2019 Hi, Dave. Firstly, I hope your shoulder will soon improve, and don’t worry about the photo’s, it’s just so good you can still post anything under the circumstances. So, the Glasgow Central photo’s are superb and capture the station so well from that visit on the 17th, February, 1990. I particularly like C13982, of a ‘Blue Train’, 303047. Of course, by the time of that photo’, it was in a completely different livery and the cab windows had undergone their alterations too. But what a fine train they were. With warmest regards, Rob.

RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted August 4, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 4, 2019 (edited) As today I have reached the milestone age of 70 I thought I would upload a few photos of what were "favourite" places back in the early 70s. This morning's photos are of Sewstern on the ex British Steel lines from the end of the High Dyke branch serving the iron ore quarries. The line reached the ex Midland Saxby to Borne line at Buckminster sidings. The photos were taken during the short lived preservation period. Sewstern had a large workshop building, known as the giraffe house as it was so tall - it contained a 40ton travelling crane. At the time Dad managed the workshop, railway and other industrial enterprises for the Buckminster estate, so I had unlimited access. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 4, 2019 Hi, Dave, and I would like to wish you a very happy birthday with many more to come. What a delightful collection of photo’s, and I can see why you’ve chosen them. They are all equally good, of Sewstern, and I particularly like C1228, with Peckett 1158, on a ballast train from Stainby to Sewstern, in April, 1973. What a powerful sight the engine makes as the smokes blasts out of the chimney as it powers the ballast train over the hill. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted August 4, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 4, 2019 (edited) My second favourite place today is Swayfield, as you must all know by now on Stoke Bank near Corby Glen. Why was it a favourite? It was very near home and was a lovely place to spend Saturday afternoon watching and photographing trains in almost complete quiet apart from distant noises from a kennels. The photos happen to be Dad's as I didn't have any of mine ready captioned taken there. However, there is a word of warning. Some years ago I went back after a very long gap and found it had changed a lot. I'm nor sure how often I would go there now. Perhaps if I had still been in the area and gone regularly the changes would have been gradual and I would have got used to them. It's a bit like revisiting a house where you lived as a child and finding it is nothing like you remembered, perhaps best not done. Since I left Essex in 1980 the only times I've been back were in connection with work, I don't think I'd like to revisit it now, it would be different and my cherished memories might be spoilt.
