J6512. The Class 31 is in the loco headshunt and is presumably waiting to take over a Portsmouth/Cardiff (or v.v.) working.

To be horribly pedantic it is actually standing on Middle Spur No. 2.

Oddly the two spurs were numbered the opposite way round to the platforms with the latter day platform numbering ascending from the main station building side of the layout while the numbering of the two spurs retained the original numbering with the lowest number on the left (as the station was approached from the Paddington direction).  The numbering of the spurs didn't change; I don't know when the numbering of the platforms was reversed but it was the opposite way round at the time of the 1930s rebuilding.

Hi, Dave. I like the Bristol Temple Meads and Parkway photo’s which are all full of interest and nostalgia. The first one is so full of what are now classic cars and what a splendid sight they all make.

In the second one, J6512, with a class 31 on a  parcels train, and a class 253 on an ECS in June, 1979, you have a really good view of a typical mix of different trains from different eras on different kinds of work.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Cumbria for today's photos, on the line round the coast.

If that 37 is moving, isn't it rather going to come to grief on the catch points, and if it is stationary, where is the signal that's keeping it there?

Now for today's older photos, still on the Blyth and Tyne but this time travelling from Seghill to Morpeth.

Hi David. Any idea when the line was singled in Seghill and other areas?

I should know the answer but the singling of parts of the Blyth and Tyne sort of crept up on me - I just noticed that more stretches were singled over the years - probably because although I live not far from it I didn't photograph some of it very often - because it was there and I could go any time and just didn't get around to it.

I think the Seghill part was singled not all that long before the photo was taken, so perhaps 1984.

I can't remember when the section south of South Newsham was singled, I drove over the level crossing quite often but simply cannot remember the date.

As far as I know the section south of Morpeth through Hepscott was always single track.

I think the section where it runs alongside the Metro from near Benton Quarry Junction to Palmersville must have been singled around 1980 when the line to Monkseaton and Tynemouth was re-electrified for the Metro.

I wonder what will happen when the line is reopened to passengers at least as far as Ashington (perhaps further) as seems increasingly likely.

I think that others on RMWeb will probably know the dates better than me.

David

Hi, Dave. I like the Pilmoor photo’s. They bring back happy memories, and I particularly like J1296, of Gresley A3, 4472, Flying Scotsman on the Leeds to Edinburgh, 40th anniversary  non stop run on the 1st May, 1968. I recall it being covered on the tv, the fact that the train nearly came to a stop at an adverse signal. I just cannot recall which signal that was right now!

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Hi, Dave. I like the Cambois and North Blyth photo’s.  In particular, J7316, at North Blyth with 37048 on a train to Alcan Lynemouth in December, 1980. A most atmospheric photo’.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Thanks David. Indeed regarding current line capacity, it's now pretty much the busiest I have know it since the 80s with the constant procession of biomass workings. If passenger services do ever return, I would have thought re doubling would be a necessity.

Hi, Dave. I like the High Dyke photo’s which are as full of interest as ever. In particular C1258, with Deltic, 9013, on an up express passenger service, in July, 1973. It’s another of those Deltic plus eight formations.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

And in addition to that we are now faced with storm Freya on Sunday night which is promising major problems. A strange winter compared with that lovely photo from 1983.

Rob.

The photo of the green 47 is a good reference for weathering bogies, note how the hot brake areas stand out.

Then that blue 47 must have been the inspiration to someone at Stratford. Far too early, but the way the light reflects makes it apper to be a Stratford (silver) grey roof loco.

And as already pointed out, in the timing of that one, that HST is coming up the lane. Great pics as usual...

Regards,

Dave

Hi, Dave. I like the latest L.T.&.S.R.photo’s which show, as always, the everyday railway, from BR blue days, to perfection. I particularly like C5044, at Hadleigh, with a class 302 on a Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness service on the 4th May, 1980. A most lovely view.

With warmest regards,

Rob.
