Great pictures you van almost hear the 37s getting stuck into the coils after stopping at york yard south for a crew change

When you past the night coils there was a red glow over the roof from the exhaust ports

Hi, Dave. I like the York photo’s. All are of interest and bring back many happy memories. In C9538, with 142073 and 150264 waiting to depart on a York to Scarborough service, on the 26th June, 1988, it’s a shame all the passengers could not get on the 150/2 which is infinitely preferable to the 142.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

EMU classes look right to me.

In C09573, the 73 behind is almost certainly on another Gatwick Express (headcode 20)

In that and C9275, is that the now-disappeared supermarket chain Gateway on the right?

C09564 headcode 50 on the Central side was Victoria<->Eastbourne

The 73 has what looks like a red painted shedcode plate on the front and is freshly repainted, so may be identifiable by someone. 202 or 205 perhaps?

It certainly is. It became a Somerfield and was one of those disposed of when the Co-op bought out Somerfield, IIRC. These days it's an ASDA (there's also a Lidl, right next door to it).

Hi, Dave. I like the Clapham Junction photo’s which are all full of interest. In the last one, C09573, with class 455 EMU,  5735, on a service to Guildford, on the 27th July, 1988, it is clearly apparent how improved that cab end was in comparison to the earlier class 455’s with the ‘widows peak’ box above the connecting gangway along with the air horns. The Wipac lighting was neater too.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Never noticed before, but I photographed 73124 like that in 1987, sorry no date, on a Bournemouth line REP replacement train:

while 73125 had a black shed plate on the side when I photographed it in 1985:

Later: there's a photo of a shedplate on the front of 73131 in 1988 at:

The TSO in the 455/7s was one extracted from the 508s when they were exported to Merseyside...

Hi, Dave. I like the Teesside photo’s which are full of interest and just nicely predate privatisation.

In the first photo’,  at Teesport, with 37415, on a train of empties, on the 14th April, 1993,  you have captured a great view of the 37, it’s train and the industrial surroundings.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

In C18466, I wonder why the pipe runs kick up the way they do then almost immediately straight back down again?

Looks like there were a number of these deviations in the picture, but no obvious reason for them. If something were passing under them in the transverse direction it would be too low to cross the railway.

IIRC, they're to do with absorbing expansion and contraction in the pipe-runs.

Hi, Dave. I like the Longhirst photo’s on the ECML from 1992 and 1993. All are most interesting, and nostalgic. In C18071, with 43094, leading a Aberdeen to Kings Cross express on the 17th October, 1992, are the two people your parents? And in the following photo’, C18732, with 56126, on an emptiy train to Butterwell , on the 24th July, 1993, you can see that the section of the OHLE does not have the contact wire staggered for some reason. I thought all sections of the contact wire had to be staggered to help avoid undue wear on the pantograph.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.
