Tioday we travel to the High Dyke branch, off the ECML south of Grantham, along with its associated iron ore quarries and lines.

I think it has been some time since our last visit.

Is that the Marion dragline being dismantled in the background of C1024 before it was shipped to Glendon? It doesn't look complete and the long jib crane is presumably involved in the operation.

As far as I know it is.    The long jib crane is apparently a Lima 1201 diesel crane from Buckminster Quarries used to lift up the parts as Marion was dismantled to be moved (information from the book mentioned below).

There are a few more (brief) details in Eric Tonks' book "The Ironstone Quaries of the Midlands - Part VIII South Lincolnshire.

Excellent pictures David,  see the HST has got all that way with reds on the front!

Just goes to show how discoloured the white lens used to get with all the crap spewing from the filthy Valentas. Those lens where a right ball ache to get clean.

It's not the markers that have discoloured they are the next lights along

Good evening, David. I like the Larbert photo’s from the 5th April, 1991. In the first photo’, with class 156, 156477, on a Dunblane to Edinburgh service, on the right you can see a great example of a splitting distant. I’m not sure, but there cannot be many examples of them left today.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

That one included.

There's some splitting colour light distants, don't think there's any semaphore left.

The day I went to Larbert - on the way to Aberdeen for a work meeting at ARI - there was a problem and the distants were not being used. :threaten:

Great pictures David

What is happening in the last one, did the Nene valley vacuum fit some of its foreign coaches as the 5mt doesn't appear to be air braked

Russ,

I'd never thought about that.

According to the loco's page on Wikipedia air brakes were fitted in 1979 - I assume that is the hose on the right of the photo (i.e. really on the left of the bufferbeam), which looks rather like a steam heating hose.

Photos of the Nene Vally Railway Railway in the early 1980s this morning.

From a former Nene valley member I can shed some light on this loco. It originated at Bridgenorth, but only ever steamed there once. it moved to the Nene Valley railway and last steam there in 1986.

This loco has a somewhat Macabre following, as this loco 64-305 has been confirmed as having hauled trains to Auschwitz during the holocaust. Sad history of the loco.

You can see three hoses on the rear buffer beam of 73050's tender. They'll be air, vacuum and steam heat (but not necessarily in that order!).

Ref J9757; probably empty wagons going to collect another load from Stora-Enso, who imported it via Hartlepool Docks. Not sure where it would be going to afterwards; probably Leeds, Manchester and Glasgow.

Used to go back to tees then into the speedlink network.  Bizarrely this job was booked a 350 for some reason maybe because it also shunted and picked up from a scrapyard at cliffe house

If it just had the VGAs the TOPS list would say ' this train has sufficient brake force to run class 4' try doing that with a 350!

Were is the German  loco now has it moved away or is it stored?

The loco is currently stored undercover inside Wansfords original running shed. I believe if you visit you can be escorted to it. this is my pic of it from 18 months ago.

Good evening, David. I like the Nene Valley Railway photo’s, and they all are full,of interest. In J7361, at Wansford, with Britannia, 70000, Britannia, in May, 1981, it’s good seeing how some of the pipe work and the cab roof were painted in white. Quite like Hornby finishing it like that. ;)

The photo’s from between Newcastle and Hartlepool, are fascinating, and show aspects of the railway which the vast majority of people would not have thought of taking photo’s of. So thank you for them, and the last one at Hartlepool, with 37503, on a down freight, in February, 1989, is a good example which conveys how the ordinary railway was back in the late 1980’s.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

J10613 looks like there’s a Met-Cam DMU coach at the end of that line and another 5 vehicles in.

J8961 could be 47301. The cantrail stripe looks very orange the way Thornaby depot locos looked.
