I think you'll have seen a few photos captioned as "Butterwell Junction" in this thread, just to the north od Ulgham Lane crossing.  In other words, north of Morpeth on the ECML in Northumberland.

 

The line curving off to the north east at the junction went to Butterwell opencast loader, but it alsdo went beyond there, originally servibg a number of pits.  On it's way it went over Potland level crossing and then used to go on to join the Blyth and Tyne at Ashington.  In recent times there was an opencast loading point just south of Potland level crossing.

 

The photos start at Butterwell Junction and then move to the level crossing.

Good evening, David. That’s a lovely selection of photo’s of Butterwell Junction and Potland level crossing. In J7639, at Potland Level Crossing, with 37030, on a down empties train to Butterwell, in April, 1982, you have an excellent example of a 37 looking both weathered and work weary. A good project for a model.

I used to watch LL shunt around at Port Sunlight Sidings - either taking the wagons off into the works after arrival or assembling the train ready for the departure - in the 1970s while sitting in the signal box.

We stay at Carnforth for the first three photos this afternoon, taken in August 2003.  A few weeks after this I used up my stock of slide film and from then only took digital photos.  I quickly sold my Minolta 35mm SLR camera and lenses while there was still a market for them.

 

The rest of the photos were taken further north, at Penrith, in March 1993.

Good evening, David. That’s an impressive selection of photo’s of Steamtown, Carnforth. That last one of Barclay, Lord Levenshulme, on the 8th August, 1987, shows how little and quirky it was. It would make such a lovely model.

The photo’s of Carnforth and Penrith are a most excellent historical record. In C26366, with Pendolino, 390002, on test, on the 28th July, 2003, you can see the track it is running on had only recently been renewed. It would have been running at no more than 20 mph.

Good evening, David. That’s an excellent set of Tyne and Wear Metro photo’s. I’m left wondering why photography is not permitted on the stations. However, in C16834, at Tynemouth, with 4010 and 4046, on a Pelaw to St James service, on the 9th May, 1992, in the park in the foreground, you can see a former NER station seat.

I like the atmosphere of JBWP171 particularly, a very interesting shot;  but also your capture of the 108 unit - I have a particular fondness for First Gen DMUs for all their faults and shortcomings and it's a good wee shot with the unit just out from the station with the telegraph polls and spindly trees adding further visual interest.

Good evening, David. What a fantastic selection of black and white photo’s of the Great Central line between Nottingham Victoria and Loughborough Central stations.  In DMImageS05, at East Leake, with a class 20, D8046, on a goods working of two brake vans, in 1968, you have a beautifully composed scene which is full of period atmosphere which cannot ever be recreated. Preserved railways may try to, but it’s just not the same.

In C1824, at Buston Barns, with 91017, on a down express on the 16th January, 1993, you can see how the glazing has gone missing from where the head, tail and marker lights are.
