RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted September 9, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 9, 2021 Warkworth! On honeymoon in 1974, Deb and I spent a lovely Autumn morning exploring the old castle ruins. Seeing my father a couple of weeks later I mentioned this. "Warkworth? Oh, I was run out of there by an angry father!" he said. Further details of this late-1920s escapade were not forthcoming! 8 1
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted September 9, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 9, 2021 Good evening, David. That’s a superb selection of photo’s of Warkworth and Widdrington Stations on the ECML in Northumberland. The first one, is a superbly composed shot of a class 254 HST with 43089 leading at Widdrington Station, on an up express in July, 1983. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted September 10, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 10, 2021 (edited) Some photos of Dad's today, taken around 1954/5 at Daybrook station. Daybrook was on the Great Northern Railway Derbyshire and Staffordshire extension from the Grantham to Nottingham line at Colwick. Passenger trains could run into Nottingham via Netherfield and Colwick or over the Nottingham Suburban Railway. The junction for this was just east of Daybrook station. The suburban railway closed completely in 1951, having been closed to through traffic since 1941 following bomb damage near Trent Lane Junction. Daybrook station closed in 1960 because of mining subsidence in Mapperley Tunnel. Edit - Dad had a track permit for the area, he was not trespassing. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted September 10, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 10, 2021 Good evening, David. That’s a most impressive selection of photo’s, taken by your Dad, of Daybrook station in 1954/55. In JVol7056, with L1, 67746, on a Basford North to Nottingham Victoria via Netherfield service in March, 1955, you can see that the first two carriages are a steel twin art. It’s probable that at least another twin art would be in that formation, either steel or teak. With warmest regards, Rob.

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted September 12, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 12, 2021 Good evening, David. That’s a superb selection of photo’s of the Talyllyn Railway. What lovely scenes they all show, and in J3063, at Brynglas, with number 3, Sir Hadyn, on an Abergynolwyn to Tywyn service in August, 1972, you have a beautiful scene as the train makes it’s way through the Welsh scenery. The Riding Mill and Stocksfield photo’s from the Newcastle to Carlisle line are a most excellent set, and in the last one at Stocksfield, with 153317 and 143611, on a Middlesbrough to Carlisle working in August, 1992, on 143611, you can see a most interesting position for the set number on the cab end with it being in the middle with non standard size numerals. RMweb Premium corneliuslundie Posted September 13, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 13, 2021 Interesting to see the difference between the before and after platforms at Langwathby. Now a noticeable slope back from the edge. We ere discussing on another thread when this kind of thing would have started, as many older platforms were quite low and were brought up to 3 ft above rail level many years ago. But it is evidently still happening. Jonathan
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted September 13, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 13, 2021 Good evening, David. That’s an excellent set of photo’s of the Settle and Carlisle line. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted September 14, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 14, 2021 (edited) Nothing to do with railways, but odd things one sees. I was at Mum's today and happened to look out of her kitchen window and saw a sailing ship passing by (under power) moving up the harbour. It made a nice change from small bulk carriers, container ships and offshore support ships. Actually it does have to do with railways, I can see a railway from the same window as well as the route of an early waggonway to the harbour. Newcastle Central today. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted September 14, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 14, 2021 Good evening, David. Firstly, it’s great you can see ships, as well as a railway from your Mum’s kitchen window. I wish I could see something good like that from mine. Well, the Newcastle Central station photo’s are a great selection, and what a lovely weathering job on 47444, in J09923, on a Liverpool to Newcastle service, in June, 1989. Just look at the speckled effect on the yellow. I’ll have to try reproducing that on a large logo blue 47 that I have. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted September 16, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 16, 2021 Good evening, David. That’s an impressive set of photo’s of Lucker, on the ECML in Northumberland. With you mentioning about nearby Lindisfarne it has brought back memories of a school trip from Beverley to the island back in mid - June, 1973. We went by train, a 4 car 104 unit to Hull at 8.30 a.m., and then a 47 hauled train of Mk1’s in both blue/grey and maroon liveries, complete with one of the long lasting Gresley buffet cars. The destination station was Alnmouth, and we went to and from the island on a Bristol MW5G bus. We got back to Beverley at the late hour of 1130 p.m., We were allowed to be an hour late in school the following morning. And that’s a fine view of a double headed train in C18411, with 37689 and 37692, on a down coal train, on the 7th April, 1993.
