Good afternoon, David. That is a great selection of photo’s from Damdykes and Clifton level crossings on the ECML. In J13840, at Damdykes, with 56135, on an up train of empty wagons, in April, 1993, you have a train which can longer be seen. 56’s on such trains are gone, so thank you, and your Dad, for having taken such photo’s to help the memories to live on.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Good afternoon, David. That’s a most excellent selection of photo’s of Newcastle. In the last one, of 91002, on an up service, on the 22nd June, 1992, you can see that it is another one to, at that time, have the glazing missing from both of the light clusters. I now wonder if it was some kind of issue with the design of either the glazing or the way it was fixed into place?

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

If they were like the HSTs, it was a relatively thin bit of perspex or polycarbonate, thinking the former, as the latter is stronger, but will age and become brittle. At 125 mph even a bird would go through the plastic and could take out the glass lens behind, as I once pulled the remains of a bird out of an HST headlight. IIRC the headlight was replaced, but the plastic was out of stock in the stores.....

Evening Brian

I thought this at first but the departmental 150 has different door and window arrangements to the standard ones.

I think this is one of the strange liveried ones that existed in the run up to and privatisation

The livery is the GMPTE variation of Regional Railways circa 1991 I think

Good evening, David. That’s a superb selection of photo’s of Alnmouth and Buston Barns on the ECML in Northumberland. In J11901, at Buston Barns, with 47523, on an up parcels train in April, 1991, you can see that the first two Mk1 BG’s have different bogies, with the first one riding on Commonwealth bogies, and the second one on B4 bogies.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

That weathering on 43050 in C8179 really is something else! Fantastic shot for a model prototype there.

Contrast with J8739 - night and day really. Your photos have inspired an idea to model an HST set with one power done up to mimic the conditions in each photo, would make quite a head turner I think.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of Morpeth, which show much of interest. In C15277, with 56073, on an up coal train, on the 22nd August, 1990, you have captured a great three quarter front view of the 56.

Dreadful weathering of that power car in C8179 though.

A result of carriage washing plants being turned off and drained during freezing weather. Not uncommon but I haven't seen it photographed very often. The coaches will be the same, although the windows might have been cleaned by hand at some of the better depots.

Good point, I'd forgotten that detail. Nevertheless, I still like the idea (even if unprototypical) of having one power car done up like that with the other broadly clean with at least minor 'road dirt' weathering.

Good afternoon, David. That is a great selection of photo’s from between York and Newcastle. In C20571, at Sunderland Bridge, with 158775, on a Liverpool to Newcastle service, on the 24th October, 1995, you have captured a most photogenic scene.

With warmest regards,

Good evening, David. That’s a most excellent selection of photo’s of the Cumbrian Coast line, at Askham and Kirkby in Furness from the 29th July, 2004. In the last one, at Kirkby in Furness, with 153324, on an up service going away from the camera, you have quite a bit of detail. The house is at an angle to the railway, and I can only guess it must have been a crossing keepers house. The crossing gates are simple tubular metal ones, and semaphore signals were still in use. Indeed, the crossing and environs would make a great model.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Nice to see an image where the loco and carriages are in the same period livery. Too often there seems to be a timewarp, especially on the Severn Valley where the rake of carriages will match but will be used with different locos in different liveries during the day.
