C5828 at Tyne shows a p'way spoil train made up of  rebodied 21 ton minerals, 27 ton iron ore tipplers all of which were only used for a short time before being replaced by vacuum braked 16 ton minerals.

The 21 ton minerals were frequently overloaded by over enthusiastic digger drivers.

Is that definitely a spoil train mark?

Were those 21tonners the ones that were stored for years in the secondary sorts at tees ?

Don't know as it was before I had my own transport to visit such far off southern locations!

Good afternoon, David. I like the London Tilbury and Southend photo’s which are full of interest. The first photo’, at Laindon, looking east on a strike day in January, 1979, is eerily quiet on a typically freezing cold and snowy day.

And what a delightful photo’ of PS Waverley at Southend Pier, on the 1st May, 1978, in C3823.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Hi Dave, absolutely love the Tyne yard pictures, full of interest!

Was interesting to see the Sat Link brake van used on a ballast train of grampus wagons in J10639. Were the sat link vans often used on ballast trains? Also there is a Dutch liveried grampus in the train which is surely vacuum braked, so I’m presuming it’s a mixed train of fitted and unfitted wagons hence the brake vans?

Thanks for posting.

David

When I was a kid living on the Isle of Grain in Kent, we used to go on the Medway Queen to Southend, and dad used to take me down to see the pistons and paddles from water level, it was always a treat.

Your pics always bring back some great memories.

Thanks and keep safe.

DB 999503 has been sold into preservation so can still be seen. (Where?)

For anyone that is interested, I've found this buried deep in my archive of 999503 in a former life as "Racal Belle". If this is not the most appropriate thread, let me know and I'll repost to another thread.

In today's photos from Dave, I wonder if the plank through the hedge and resting on top of the wall adjacent to the signal that 47715 has just passed is a makeshift "access point" used by the person walking towards the camera in the 6ft?

Good afternoon, David. I like the Edinburgh photo’s from August, 1987.  All are of interest, and the photo’, J9174, is especially good with such a fantastic view of both the station and Edinburgh itself, which shows how useful the castle will have been in times of war.

The first photo’, of Edinburgh Princes Street Gardens, with 101 430, on a Kirkaldy to Edinburgh service, shows a typical hybrid unit, with just the DMSL being a class 101, the other two being class 107.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

I was going to say, there was a hybrid 101/107 unit, and you've caught the 101 end - from memory 51803 was the 101 - as the 107 sets were numbered in the 400 series whereas the 101 sets were numbered in the 300 series. Interesting that this end was numbered as 101 rather than 107.

The 107s were allocated to Scotland, possibly ED/AY at the time, later HA, with the exception of one trailer car, 59794, which was at BX then later NH. I believe that was eventually reallocated north of the border when Sprinterisation began to happen and Scotland inherited all sorts of stuff from south of the border.

Funny what you remember :-)

Good afternoon, David. I like the ECML photo’s from Acklington and Buston Barns. All are of such interest, and of relatively happy times without having to worry about a virus either.

In J8306, at Acklington, with class 254, HST, on an up express, in June, 1985, you have a beautiful summers day view which looks so good, with the HST powering along the line taking its train load of passengers to London without any real effort.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

C18578. I had forgotten that those big round hay bales had been around so long.

I assume that that is a quarry over the ridge.

A great photo.

I think an opencast mine, now closed and the land restored.

Looks like a classic S&T shortcut to the signal! Would never have contemplated it myself as a ‘goodie two shoes’ S&T man.......;)

IIRC about 1984, within a couple of years that was pretty much all you saw

I think that is actually departing from Edinburgh and heading towards Haymarket given that the headlamp and markers appear to be illuminated and there is a crew in the cab. :good_mini:

Good spot.

From memory on the opposite side there used to be a structure built on top of the wall.  I'm sure I read some where it was to allow crew changes possibly pre BR days.

Always enjoy seeing photos from Waverley in the mid 80s.

David

A couple of questions, if I may: 1) Does this museum still run? In my forays around Whitley Bay/North Shields, etc. over recent years, I've never seen it signposted; and 2) Are either of those two ex-LNER coaches still extant?

You can Google "Stephenson Museum" and will find their website. The museum is closed due to the virus but is normally open. Not sure about the two coaches.
