Good evening, David. There’s no need to apologise about being late with today’s photo’s, your private life is the thing that must come first.
Today’s photo’s are excellent, and show different aspects of Stocksfield, on the Newcastle to Carlisle line perfectly. In J11795, with 47534, on an up parcels train, in March, 1991, that is a view of a typical parcels train from that era, and will help anyone who wishes to model one.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

The 156. The best sprinter of the lot. The miles they clocked up, the reliability, best to work on, built like tanks. Just don't look at the TLC Newton heath is giving them lol.

From a fitters point of view.  I aren't keen on them . You sit too far from the screen and if you open the window cab door slams you in the cab even if it has the damper on it

From a passenger point of view not bad but they are not a 158 east Midlands to note!

I was train crew in the 90s. Nobody at RRNE had a bad thing to say about them. The only bad point was the noise in the saloon in summer with the windows open.

By the time these were in service and they realised they could have fitted them with air con the tenders had been accepted from BREL for the 158.

Conversely, I’ve got a photo of a blue/grey Scotrail Mk1 in an excursion rake in Kent.

That's got the original form of "Scotrail" before it became "ScotRail". The story goes that it was changed because too many folk were pronouncing it as "Scoe-trail".

Strange seeing a Parcels/ Mail on the N&C. We lived a few hundred yards from the line, just west of Wylam, and I can't remember seeing one between July 1983 and July 1991, when we moved.

Good afternoon, David. Well that’s an excellent selection of photo’s of the ECML in Northumberland. The first one of HST, 254023, on an up express, in December, 1980, at Cramlington, shows how good the original livery was on those high speed trains.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Not sure if it is the light or it`s age, but the first photo does not do justice to the original flying banana livery of the HST.

The 91+mk4 looked best in the original intercity colours, and I didn`t know there was still pacers in choc`&cream that late.

Then there is the scud/153, showing the depths BR had to go to to keep the treasury happy.

I still think that the original livery for the 156/158 longer distance units (was it on both or just the 158s?) was the most attractive. Pity it didn't last long.

Do you mean this one? (Albeit with CT branding)

It was certainly an improvement on the 'original' original livery. As first painted, the power cars of 253 001 had the (subsequently blue) band painted gloss black. I have a picture that I took at the Crewe Works Open Day, in 1975, of either 43002 or 43003, during their brief time in that livery (I wonder if they even made it out into the open air - or, perhaps, that's when they realised that it didn't work?).

Yes, a few 156s were turned out in 158 style lvery, but that was close to the introduction of Regional Railways livery and then privatisation so was never common on them. The taller windows didn't really sit so well with that colour scheme.

I remember working for central and these units being so filthy passengers complaining that they really couldn't see out of the windows

Good evening, David. Today’s photo’s of Carlisle are all excellent, and show various aspects of the station. The first photo’ is a most splendid portrait shot of 47625, Resplendent, on the 23rd October, 1991.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

This morning's photos are from a visit to the Norfolk Railway in October 1977 - the only time I've been there.  A few more photos taken that day will appear in due course.

David

Just noticed this post, Sheringham did indeed have the look of a scrapyard in those days, thankfully the enthusiasm of the band of volunteers kept it together and laid the foundation for what it grew to become.

the locos in the first photo aren’t identified correctly, the Fowler in the shot was an 0-4-0 but a larger stablemate that for a while was the Sheringham station pilot, Dr Harry was a bit smaller -

Fowler 4100001

The 0-6-0 saddle tank wasn’t Ring Haw, it was an outside cylinder Bagnall (IIRC) who’s name escapes me. Not sure that its restoration was ever completed, at least at Sheringham.

Thanks very much for pointing this out, I've amended the captions.
