RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted January 29, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 29, 2010 Hayle Wharves Signal Box remained in place until May 1964 and was located on the Hayle station side of the swing bridge. The line between it and Hayle (station) Signal Box was worked with a wooden train staff and by telephone but by 1962 it was worked under C2 Regulations which suggests that the signal box had been downgraded to a ground frame (if it was actually still operational). The Wharves 'box was probably mainly there to control the level crossing but it released a ground frame to operate the swing bridge. It operated a total of 3 signals - two semaphores and one ground disc - plus the complicated level crossing which was set across the 'v' of the junction. After the Wharves 'box was closed the Line was presumably carried on under C2 Regulations with the Hayle Signalman in charge but by the early 1980s it appears to have been reduced to a siding. By 1962 propelling (maximum 15 vehicles) was authorised from the Hayle station end which clearly made the working much easier with no need to run-round down at the wharf end. Hope that helps a bit.
