A little more progress on the canopy. Work to replace the actual building canopy is also underway.

Plus the three support pillars.

These will be painted B.R. southern region green before fixing. Concrete platform fencing and lamp post are ready for assembly plus the running in boards from the previous station but completing these canopies is the priority.

The canopy has now been weathered, by Nick over at Coleborne Junction and this picture shows how it will fit alongside the station building.

This is the first cut on the new canopy but seems to fit quite well, it will be supprted from brackets from the building to leave the platform area clear. The holes seen in the platform on the left are the support holes for this platforms canopy.

After pressure washing the front path this morning, then having to attend on short shopping trip this afternoon, I found an hour or so to do a little more on the canopy. It is not fixed to the building yet, so hopefully I will be able to give it a spray of grey primer this evening.

Once sprayed, I will fix it to the building and paint as required.

As can be seen from the picture, the whole assy. has been removed from the platform on to a short length of wood. This makes things a lot easier to work on. I have read somwhere that pressure washing is quite therapeutic. Complete rubbish.

Enough time today to fix the canopy to the building. A little weathering required then a few details to tidy up and the whole thing can be set on to the platform.

I wanted both canopies to be removable, the idea was that at the base of each support there would be an extension spigot to push through holes in the platform. The problem was that as the platforms are hollow and the top only thin plastic sheet, when the holes were drilled and the canopy supports pushed through there was, and it should have been obvious, no support so the canopies leaned to one side or the other. The answer was to enlarge the holes, and using plastic tube which was a push fit on to the spigots, make sort lengths long enough to touch the baseboard underneath and flush with the platform surface taking care that they were fixed upright, to except to support the columns. It was a bit fiddly, but has worked quite well. I also wanted the middle canopy which was from the old layout to be about 2mm higher and whilst rifling through my bits drawer I found some Meccano nuts, these were 1.5mm thick and the centre hole just the right size to fit over the spigot at the base of each column. Looking closely at the base of the column in the picture they can be seen forming a square base. There is a reason we hoard things. As the canopies are more or less complete, the building itself just needs new chimneys, my thoughts are where next.

Impatients has resulted in the fitting of one running in board, southern region concrete fencing will be fitted behind this on the platform edge so a great possibility it will be knocked off at some point.  This afternoon, I had a tidy up as I had reached a stage of not being able to find things again, the result was that I found a packet of Peco fencing panels after buying two packs a couple of weeks ago.

I have been distracted from work on the station by the arrival of the Bachmann concrete bus shelters for which I have been waiting for some time to be released. After several mock ups, I have decided that the whole of the area in front of the shops will form a small bus terminus. Coming in from the left and departing from the right past the end of the station. The paved area has been made from Metcalfe card paving, a product I have used in some quantity over at Coleborne Junction.

The yellow bus is Bournemouth corporation whilst the other is one of the Bere Regis fleet, many Sunday mystery tours were taken on these with my Gran when I was young. My Gran always insisted on knowing where the mystery tour was going before buying tickets.

As I mentioned on my recent entry on the  Coleborne Junction thread, little progress has been made during the summer break, during which my wife and I took a TGV train fom Paris to Bordeaux and at one time the coach information screen showed the train travelling at 314 kmh. During the two hours or so journey, speed rarely dropped below 290 - 300 Kmh.  Back to Brampton road. I have added a back wall to platform 1under the new canopy plus completed the concrete fencing to the end of the platform.

Over the weekend I hope to add posters, timetables seats and people under the canopy, plus finish the Southern style concrete lamp post.

Hopefully Nick ( Coleborne Junction ) and I will have a drive and fire turn at Swanage in November. 25 mph max.  Much more fun than a TGV.

Time over the weekend to add a little detail under the canopy.

I have also nearly made all of the concrete platform lamps, hope to fit these before the weekend.

A new addition to Brampton Road.  West Country, Bideford. I have fitted a Zimo sound chip which was removed from Weymouth. Weymouth has now been retired. Happens to us all.

In between beach walks, bush pruning, window cleaning etc. I finished assy. and fitting the station lamp post over the weekend. These are ratio kits of the concrete products of Exmouth Junction. I need more people seats and things for the platforms having used up quite a few around the bus area but am trying to avoid buying more of the ones I have. There are only so many twins and triplets around. Plus trees at the platform end.

Off to Coleborne Junction this afternoon, hopefully a few more pictures from there.

After converting Brampton road to a fiddle yard to teminus layout, things have remained fairly static since my last post in autumn.

I have spent considerably more time operating the layout now than ever before and have been very pleased that I made the change.

The one thing that I found awkward to use was the fiddle yard arrangement and I never ballasted the tracks into the yard whilst I made the decision on what if any improvements could be made. I have had several ideas on changes but none seemed quite right untill a couple of weeks back,  when I realised the main problem was that when a train left the fiddle yard, I had to change a crossover so that the train train could approach on the down line and when leaving the station the cross over had to be changed back. something I kept forgetting to do. Plus, the amount of room taken by the crossover was limiting the length of some of the six roads in the yard.

Although the situation was the normal one to all modellers, putting a pint into a quart pot, I realised I was doing just that. So why have a double track approach to the station, just make it single line. No crossover, two roads could be increasd in length, I could justify four or less coaches behind a West Country pacific. So, out with the pliers and track lifting began.

IMG-20200418-WA0005.jpg.d4a8a8194acce8b8b91dc5a04ed45c42.jpg

Relaying the track is not going to be such a problem as sorting out the wiring. However, the present situation has meant time is not a problem.

Another major change at Brampton road has been in the control system. I was becoming weary of some of the operational aspects of my ZTC system, so have changed to a Gaugemaster Prodigy advance. Very much easier to use, saves space, on main track programming etc.

Hopefully all should be up and running again within a few days.

Hi Brian,

Nice little update there. The single line seems like a good plan.  Are you going to keep part of the removed line as a bit of a head shunt/carriage siding? Cant quite recall the track plan so mot sure if that woukd work ir not.

If you get stuck for bits MRS are delivering locally..

Thanks Scott.

Yes,  carriage siding.  I have also been toying with idea of losing the goods shed and having a small refuelling point for the 08.

New fiddle yard track work all in place. This view is from the turntable end. Now, four roads can hold a loco and four coaches. As there is not room to allow all six roads access to the turntable, roads one and two join each other to access the table and form a round round loop. I envisage these roads to be mainly for short freights.

The cross over between roads four and three will not be motorised and only used when my wokbench is not in place over the yard.

Every thing is connected to the DCC bus and all works fine. Point motor and switch wiring next.

All fixed and working. After refixing the entrance to the yard panel, I realised that I could fit another turnout to provide an engine or guards van bay. As this will not be motorised it will be a simple fit and it will be done soon.

Another couple of plus points re. this change is a new small area now available for scenic work, plus it will now only require a single tunnel entrance of some sort.

My work bench back in place. It may look untidy but not as bad as normal.

Hi Scott. No not as yet, possibly some railway allotments. I am still deciding about the entry to the fiddle yard. Looks like it will be the normal tunnel mouth again. I am pleased though with the way things have worked out, easier and more flexible to operate.

Cheers Brian.
