spacehopper100
an as yet unnamed layout ive dubbed Project Nerd for the time being! Had been thinking about sorting out a new model for about 6 months since seeing my other halfs step-dads layout... but the new start was finally kicked off a few weeks ago by my Dad needing to remove my 15 year old unfinished (and fixed in place) layout from his loft to give him better access to all the stuff stored up there as hes getting on a bit now! and to give him some more storage space up there... heres a few pics of the old layout during dismantling.. spacehopper100
so on with the planning! first plan was for a large dismantleable roundy roundy layout with a through station and a terminus as seen below.. and some live planning to see if it all fitted... but i decided that was a tad ambitious and large for a first foray back so decided to take a smaller section and work on that and see where i went from there taking inspiration from the excellent Pallet Lane layout in Januarys railway modeller i decided to concentrate on the smaller through station and create something around that with an oil depot or similar and a loco fueling point and repair shed type area.. a very rough plan for this can be seen below! the idea being this will also be expandable with the 2 tracks that go under the covered area in the top left corner then going through a 90 degree corner making the layout an L shape and exiting over a viaduct/bridge as in the first plan and then straight along into the terminus shown in the first plan..! if that makes any sense... theres no real Era or area theme to the layout as such as i have all sorts of stock from old steam stuff to more modern diesel locos.. but i was going to try and model this first section in a more modern setting before going back in time through the tunnel to a more steam oriented setup for the terminus if/when it gets that far! spacehopper100
a trip to the local timber merchants (Allen and Orr) ensued... i was quite gobsmacked at the price difference between them and B+Q! and they ccut it down to the rough sizes i asked for free of charge! built with a 9mm ply baseboard and 2X1 softwood frame.. Jigsawing.. everything chopped and roughly assembled.. (main boards on the left and fiddle yard on the right) Fiddle Yard screwed together.. cleaning up the joins.. a big belt sander would have been nice at this point.. what do you mean i cant come in the kitchen because im covered in dust?!!?? and heres where the layout stands currently with backscenes propped up behind the baseboards.. Next Job is to hinge the 2 main baseboards.. and sort out the fixings between the main boards and fiddle yard.. as well as sorting out securing the back scene boards.. spacehopper100
did a little bit more last night despite the drill being a bit broken! but have since bought a shiny new Makita ( i only went in to get some bolts!) so should get plenty done this weekend i hope! one of the hinges has a fair bit of play in it so will be replaced and the whole join is to be strengthened with a couple of m10 bolts going through the cross braces as its a bit wobbly at the moment thanks for looking! spacehopper100
got the baseboards pretty much done this weekend... just a few cross braces to put in place under the two scenic boards once ive got my track and decided where all the points etc are going! i could have used a hacksaw... but the dremel is so much more fun!
