I wasn’t going to pay the Bachmann price for 37521 so got a cheap (£80) 37421 off eBay, changed the noses and removed the roof mounted horns. Sold the old noses for more than I paid for the flush /5 noses.

I love a bit of modelling.

I completely agree with you. In late 2017 I bought three 37421 models for £100 each, with two to become 175 & 219 and the third to stay as 421. I know that their are differences between the three locos in reality but I didn't want to have to pay silly money for Colas 37s in the future, considering that the Bachmann tooling is now how many years old and is becoming quite a basic looking model for the high price tag when compared to new high spec models which can be bought for less. So now it means that if 521 isn't reduced from £145 I won't buy it. Happy to pay say £120 or less but for £145 it's an expensive model given other offerings. You've done an excellent job with the weathering and fitting the new noses. You are an excellent modeller, I wish I had the skills and ability that you have.

you do realise that 421 is a refurbished engine with the additional grills in the nose whereas 175 and 219 would be original bodies with just the cutaway buffer beams.

Nice work  Andy,

I've also done 37521 in Colas and now it's gone to LSL at Crewe...… and will probably end up in green

Always a bit of a b&gger doing up to date stuff.

37521 - Crewe LSL

Indeed it is Mick. I knew it was going to LSL a while back but I do like the flush fronted ones especially with ploughs so will be a keeper.

Thanks for letting me know and yes I chose to sacrifice some differences just so I could have a few cheap Colas 37s.

I'm glad I did because 175 & 219 were the original two Colas 37s unveiled in the new livery after overhaul in 2014, whereas yes Bachmann have produced an accurate 521 to go with 025, 099 and 421 which have been produced previously but this one has only been in traffic with Colas for less than two years. 521 was released into traffic in January 2018 and removed from traffic in November 2019, before transfer to Locomotive Services at Crewe in late December 2019.

Your work is superb, Andy! I'm even impressed by the graffiti even though I hate seeing it in real life!

Thanks for the praise Jules. I totally understand what you mean. For me I’m making the world in miniature and that means warts an all. I spend a lot of time adjusting my DCC chip settings to reflect real loco acceleration and deceleration so graffiti is just another detail for me to capture.
Thanks again.

Your graffiti rendition is quite possibly the best I've seen modelled.  Too many modellers add these 'burners' or 'pieces' at jaunty angles, whereas in reality these are almost always done on a straight(ish) plane.

So time has slipped by without this thread being updated as per usual at the minute. Still lots happening and plenty of new stock to be/being worked. I have just completed the painting of a 56 and 60 in the new D.C. Rail colours. These are getting varnished tonight and I hope to have them fully complete and weathered by COP Sunday. I will on Friday finally have my first Hattons 66 in my hands and this will also be weathered/fixed! at the same time, I’m very excited to hear the sound for the first time. Anyway a couple of pics with more to follow. Stay safe.

Of late I have been very busy but mainly with buying stuff and lots of weathering. Below is some of the stuff I have been working on.
I have completed a rake of 7 TTA aviation fuel tanks to replicate the Prestwick flow. All individually numbered and detailed. The end wagon has been detailed with tail lamp etc. That’s are also weathered and really look the part.

Also completed the weathering 4 of my MXA wagons, 2 graffitied Freightliner HIA’s, the first 3 of 18 Accurascale PCA’s,  various coaches and an RBA wagon.

Locos now complete include a Heljan 33, Colas 37521 and DB 60044.
Lots of work goes into the hand and airbrush weathering of the above including lots of individual detailing of each item.
The DB 60 has TTS sound, wire loop couplings with detailed buffer beams, painted interior details behind grills, bespoke transfers and very bespoke weathering.

Hope you enjoy the update. All

work including graffiti is by my own fair hand.

Well I have my model of 66593 in Freightliner green. It arrived completely intact in the box with nothing missing or fallen off. It really is stunning and an age ahead of the Bachmann machine (still a fine model that I must have 8 of and won’t be getting rid). The details are beautiful  and the weight is just what I needed (heavy trains up helixes which the Bachmann model fails to achieve even with weight added), this will easily achieve it. I immediately tested it and it ran just fine but with a slight wobble (I have had much worse on Bachmann 47/57’s that never got better). This I diagnosed as a couple of axel boxes which I removed cleaned and fitted straight, ran much better but I think the rest will disappear after bedding in. Next job was remove body and fit driver and cab details. Now this was daunting but I didn’t break or bend a single thing, you really have to take your time. It fits on the chassis so well and the build quality is excellent in my opinion. If you like details this is the model for you. BTW the Legomanbiffo sound is amazing and the speaker set up really does it justice.

Once tested and the cabs done I set about weathering it by hand and airbrush which is now mostly complete. I will at some point add the zero injuries and the balanced maintenance transfers. Just thought before anyone asks, I have added the missing paint as per the real locomotive as seen on the mainline today. Also the weathering colours look much much better in real life than on the pictures.

All in all I could not be happier. Absolutely stunning, heavy, lots of special details such as the grills, rotating axel boxes etc, the lights are excellent and the sounds does the model justice. I cannot wait for my other 2 sounds locos to arrive in the future.

Anyway hope you like the pictures.

Loads going on as always.
First up is updating Colas 60087 to its as seen in 2020 GBRF/Colas colours. I have removed all the relevant transfers and put some maskol on the windows ready for some gloss varnish prior to new transfers.
DCR 60046 is now complete and ready for weathering, really happy with the DCR pair. DCR 56091 just needs rebuilding when I find the bag of windows et al.
I have finished updating 20132 ready to partner with 20118 in 2020 condition. It’s getting weathered with the airbrush this afternoon.

56302 was an eBay special that had been part Debranded but required work to make it look decent. Although not possible to make into 56301 in its actual debranded livery I still think this looks great and I plan on keeping it as I love the Hornby 56 model.
Also made this little scratch built shed for the layout out of some off-cuts, I have a seagull to stick on the roof.

Finally for now I have graffitied another Accurascale PCA. Very pleasurable to do, definitely will do a few more. This along with another 3 will be weathered later.

Comments welcome.

Andy

A few items have been finished.
Firstly I have weathered 68010 in Chiltern livery. Had this ages but only just decided to finish it. Fitted the nameplates a few years ago but have had to sort them out as the Phoenix precision varnish I used had yellowed badly. Won’t be using this anymore, their paint is really good though. Odd.

Also nice to have 20132 finished, complete with spurious nameplates! Just requires me to weather 20118 to partner it some point soon. Also finished another 3 Accurascale PCA wagons.

Hornby KFA weathered along with 3 20 foot containers. These are lovely wagons, think we have 3 now.

Ex Colas 60087 now GBRF is finished. Went to look at pictures when doing the decals and realised that the GBRF vinyls are only on one end and side, makes it quite interesting. The nameplates are on both sides. I don’t have a chassis for this so will swap out with the below item.

GBRF 60095 weathered up and ready for action post lockdown. The Hornby 60 is still such a good model (couplings aside).
Luckily I grabbed a load of stock to work on from the layout as it’s at my brothers house which I’m obviously not able to go to.

Next up is finish weathering some Revolution MMA’s, more Accurascale PCA’s and my GWR sliding door castle set coaches.

Also I have purchased a second Colas body that requires a little de-weathering! Interestingly in the pictures it looks slightly less overdone than in reality. Slightly daunting the prospect when I started it but progress has been made quicker than hoped and I only have half left to remove. The Colas decals are coming off as part of the process but that’s fine as it came with a full pack replacements. I’m going to put the later style Oliver hats on and obviously give it an appropriate number, unsure which yet. The pictures show quite a stark difference before and after. Will keep this updated with progress.

I hope that was done in a well ventilated area Andy...looks like lots of muck needed to come off! :O

Superb work as usual, I’ve got a soft spot for the choppers having seen them so often in the past few years around Derbyshire on LUL transfers and now on ROG stock moves! It’ll be nice to see your pair finished.

Keep up the great work,

Jack.

Thanks Jack. I’m looking forward to the pair being done and then running with my barrier coaches. So many great locos now running with barrier coaches. I’m getting quite a collection of them myself. Also going to do another pair of coaches to mix it up.

So the 70 has had the weathering removed without sustaining any paint work damage. It did take quite a while I might add.
Following this I have detailed both cab interiors, re-shaped and painted the driver. I then put the body back together, painted all glazing with maskol and have gloss varnished where all the transfers are going. The pics below show this stage. Tonight though I have added all the transfers, pics tomorrow of this.
