Well I managed to do all 48 moves. That is emptying and filling both fiddle yards. In theory all trains should have run twice but as I don't keep a check a few may have only ran once and some three times, but what the heck. Every train did run. It isn't just from Fiddle yard to station or vise-versa as each move means the train runs at least six times around the layout, many do more laps. Each lap is just under a scale mile so most trains today covered over 10 scale miles.  I also ran two steam specials that did not enter the station and watched Dr Who.

Good call. If they had entered the station they wouldn't have had time to watch the telly.

Excellent accomplishment my good man... however you do realise the old saying of 'pics or didn't happen' applies ;)

A mate of mine does time-lapse videos on his phone, would be a good way to watch fiddle yards empty and fill over the course of a day... not that I have any idea on how one would go about setting that kind of video up! Keep up the good work.

Well how about some more to keep Old Timers like me HAPPY,:good::maninlove:.

This evening by request of some old geezer I am going to share some photographs. To start with the position of all 22 trains at the start of play.

The year is 1968 and it is the end of the 1967-8 winter timetable. Steam has been officially eliminated from duties at Exchange  and there are fewer long distance trains.

To start with the Manchester sidings. 001a.jpg.784465319d42db2cd414520477b1cfd6.jpg

002a.jpg.624763abbea802e3ec4eb050d259895a.jpg

All DMUs.

The station,

004a.jpg.fb1bf4292c4d584814896105247b7ec6.jpg

The class 24 is the station pilot, a nice job for the lazy drivers as it is hardly used these days.

The steam loco yard, empty waiting for the demolition men to come and remove the equipment, there is talk of a new office block being built on its site.

005a.jpg.94a6a8687cf3bc4b2caf85b72c510cbd.jpg

Over the other side is the diesel sidings with far more locos than are needed. The Brush four has been there for a week now and the rumour amongst the platform enders it is broken.

009a.jpg.a88f347cc09b71e9bf7af7332fdbb1b7.jpg

Over the other side the room is the Doncaster sidings. There are four loco hauled trains, 2 parcels, a gangway set and a non-gangway set. 007a.jpg.b9862c9d25b408e6f0ca5814c8ef6da4.jpg

Soon some train running, well pictures of them.

The first two have left their fiddle yards and are pottering around the room.

The Met-Cam units represent a local from Doncaster and the Cravens a stopper from Preston.

012a.jpg.7704a114611b3b51b3caf09f95e76fa9.jpg

The Doncaster is the first to arrive at platform 5, it will form a train to Barnsley later on.

013.jpg.0c40a3c3e6d378cc3922f1dacd0c5985.jpg

The Preston train soon follows arriving at platform 7.  This service will end come the summer time table, no longer will people from Sheffield be able to join a train for Glasgow or Blackpool via Preston.

Soon after the arrival of the Preston train the signalman is busy sorting things out for the York express DMU to leave. 014a.jpg.46a3f12c5065206b5afe933ff4b79df8.jpg

This is another service which will disappear from the platforms of Exchange with the new time table. There will still be a York service but it will now leave the old Midland Railway station.

016a.jpg.03808c19693dfab4d8bee359463610e8.jpg

Hot on its heels is a local to Barnsley.

back to the railway room in the real world, here we see the six car Met-Cam unit entering the Doncaster sidings as the Derby 2 car sails by.

As soon as the Derby unit is in the Manchester sidings we have the next two making their way to the station.

019a.jpg.6fdc84ccd465854ec353603385ac5254.jpg

The Gloucester-Derby consist has already left the Doncaster sidings and is passing the Manchester ones as a right old mixture leaves.

After doing its six or so laps around the room the Gloucester-Derby consist arrives from Leeds.

020a.jpg.98cfd10a9417be6e9d61c7dd2d3712f0.jpg

The passengers in the leading car are sure they are going hit the train that is leaving.

021a.jpg.33aa152f6ccef0eff813fced6cdf9d1a.jpg

Phew, the signalman knew what he was doing allowing the Transpennine to Liverpool to leave on time.

Many of the trains have been made shorter for this time table, the public think it is to discourage them from travelling to Exchange and to use Midland and Victoria stations instead.

Still busy but it is a sign of things to come

The 3 car Cravens unit departs shorty afterwards, it is an empty stock working. Later in the day it will return to to form a stopping service to Manchester. Only 3 coaches rattling between two of Britain's important northern cities. No wonder when the M62 was finished people use it.

024a.jpg.e2ce9bcab1e175d515d2eac6ac86678f.jpg

Still no movement at the diesel depot. Only a few years ago every train needed a fresh loco and the two loco yards were very busy.

Edit... I forgot to add this one of two "Tri-ang" based DMUs

Look at those boxes under the train set....and they are not mine.

The last two arrivals form this short operating session are the empty stock for the postal train and a express service from Manchester. Soon the only loco hauled trains will be parcels even the postal is going to be re-routed.

028a.jpg.35e3b422ae728084cb42965ba43cb014.jpg

The Type 2 Bo-Bo waits for the Manchester train to arrive.

A couple of shots taken at platform level by friends of our intrepid photographer.

Those who know their cloud formations I am sure you recognise the black cloud over Sheffield, yes that's right it is called a finger.

The postal is given a green signal and makes its way to platform 1.

The postmen are soon unloading their road vans directly into the sorting van.

Hi Clive,

If your layout is 1968 and all the steam engines have gone, then your above shot of Barry scrap yard is an interesting one. Not only does it look to be particularly neat and tidy Dai Woodham has even put then into boxes !

Gibbo.

Wow, I can just hear the raspy farty noises in the last page of posts. Are you tempted to add clouds of acrid blue smoke? There must be a way of Photoshopping that in.

A curry the previous night perhaps?
