My understanding is that the WR argued that they didn't have any/enough electrical engineers or experience along those lines, but plenty of mechanical engineers, so argued for less electrics in locomotives.

They got what they wished for, and the rest is history, although I reckon a combination of numerous factors contrived to create the problems.

Mike.

I think weight was the deciding factor early on. At 80 tons they were not much over half the weight of  a Class 40, the only comparable Locomotive at the time. This meant on Paddington - Birmingham they could take any extra revenue earning coach than a class 40,and still keep the two hour schedule. However they weren’t really up to the job they were designed for. As early as 1950 or51 a committee into the future of motive power on British Railways concluded there was insufficient experience of main line diesels in this country and much more testing needed to be done before final decisions could be made, although it was estimated that diesels of 2500 hp would be necessary to make the improvements to justify the extra building costs 5-6 times that of a steam locomotive.

In true nationalised industry fashion, the left hand didn’t know what the right hand was doing and without much testing they lurched into an order for 2000hp diesels.  Better than the miserable class 40’s but instead of getting rid of steam with indecent haste (and waste) it would have been better to clean steam up a bit ( as was recommended in 1950) and keep them for another few years until the more powerful Westerns and class 47 were available.

Which one's failed? Or is there a steamer pushing them both?

PS I like the clue for the "Spot the Ball" contest.

Thank you Eric,

I was speaking to his wife yesterday, sadly my Uncle John is now living in a nursing home. My aunt hasn't been able to see for the pass few months.

I did run some trains, no photos cos I forgot to take me camera or me phone into the toy room and once the bridge is down unless a call of nature is urgent I remain stuck in there.

I know I have played this song before but not this recording.

Genessa as usual does a good solo.

Clive, looking at the football line up from 1958, would I be right in thinking that the Chelsea no.10 Greaves is the famous Jimmy, later of Spurs and England, who just missed out on the 1966 World Cup due to injury?

John.

I have a question to ask of those with the more serious case of the disease, is there any known cure?

I have been diagnosed with replicasusburbanchopatitus.

Other than running out of raw materials between paydays or waiting for bits to be delivered, is there any hope or cure for me?

Yours, suffering

Yes there is a cure, take up pre grouping modeling as the antidote. You will wonder how you got so hooked on replica suburbans in the first place. You will probably find it started with youthful mistakes like watching blue grey diesels and thinking bland dirty stock was the best you could expect.

My condition has worsened with the lockdown. Even though I was working I appear to be creating a vic berry style of stacked bodies on my workbench.

Then finding out DC kits still have some bits I can use is not helping.

But, on the bright side, it is still better than sitting and watching the goggle box.

This thread has been brought to my attention by the Replica Suburban Coach Defence League and the Leave Coaches in State You Bought Them Society.

I must ask you gentlemen to cease and desist at once from these Heinous Crimes Against Innocent Coaches.

Please start scratcbuilding at once, or feel the Full Force Of The Law.

Yours sincerely,

PS you diesel bashers better watch out too, you're next.

Do you think I could get help from the NHS?

They're busy with Coronavirus at the moment.  Once that's out the way they can address things like Corridorcompositevirus.

Hi Chessy

There was a very good specialist psychotherapist who had a good track record with all types inflictions related to railway modellers chopping up perfectly good models to make something else. He then met me.

He was last heard of living as a hermit in the mountains of Idaho close to the Canadian boarder. Apparently the only way he communicates if you talk to him in Serbo-Corate  he will answer you in Swahili, with a defined northern Kenyan accent.

Looks like they have fun on stage.

That can be deceptive with cpop and kpop bands as they are manufactured to fit an image, don’t smile enough, well we will find someone else to fill your spot.

But these ladies play their own instruments and don't appear to be manufactured.

It does make the video more enjoyable with a nice smile on the faces of the band.

Hi Woodenhead,

They can come and play my instrument any time they like, unfortunately for them I don't have an organ like Jean Michel Jarre !
