Have just had a two day work/running session at the local church hall.  We were so busy that taking photos was not a high priority, but here are a few....

 

Al installed the beginings of a Faller roadway system that will run along the front of the layout the entire length ... this photo also shows the new display boards under construction ....

The Faller roadway will disappear off at the l/h end of the layout between the 1980's flats at the front of the layout and the bi-directional line. You will see it as it passes the open spaces between the blocks.

 

Here is a first mock up with the roadside crash barrier separating the access road and the railway line - building removed for clarity....

I have been working on rolling stock today. I recently bought some 'new' Bachmann freight cars by mail order from a exhibition 'dealer' who had bought up odds and ends from Bachmann (UK) who no longer import the Chinese stuff.

 

When they arrived I was somewhat taken aback and there was some dispute as to how much I had studied his description of five grain cars I bought off him. He says that he stated that they had 'some bits to be added' .... which I took to be vac/air pipes .... bare in mind that these cars had only ever been sold as RTR ...... this is what arrived ...

I was amazed as the basic model came with a complete set of add-on details and these were unopened factory packs - one for each car. Some add-on parts were duplicating some of the parts already factory fitted and yet there was one part ( a stay)  of which four were needed and there were only two in each pack.

 

It's a good job I have plenty of time on my hands!! :jester:

 

If you are surprised at these grain cars just wait until you see the tank cars!

There are a lot of detail parts, but yes, that's RTR, hard to call it anything else...

Three hours later (yes THREE hours) and I had one completed tank car and discovered that whilst there are enough parts (nearly) to build two complete tank cars there are a few missing bits that need to be made/bodged for numbers 3 & 4....nothing too bad but time consuming.

BIG NEWS!!!!

 

Whilst scenic board # 1 is still only nearly almost finished, things have moved on to a point where I have moved onto scenic board # 2

 

Here is the latest photo of scenic board #1 showing the crash barrier separating the road from the industrial line....

I am spending a lot of time agonising (again!) ................

 

I realise that I am trying to squeeze a quart into a pint pot - especially width wise. So here is the problem : in the space between the passenger track and the shops behind the station I have to fit a passenger platform and an access road to those shops.

 

My first version had a platform width of 13ft 6inches (47.5mm) which left the access road very narrow .....

An alternative version has a passenger platform width of 11ft 6 inches (40mm) and whilst the access road is still narrow it looks more feasible ...

The issue is that Chinese industrial railway passenger platforms are usually surprisingly wide for the number of paseengers/trains they support, like this one at Baiyin....

So please remember that these paltforms will be 10ft long so the narrow version might look too 'spindly'. On the other hand the general viewer will tend to look at the platform from the side rather than along ...... this mock up gives an impression of how  the two versions might look .....

Paul, I would go for the wider platform and make it a one way street. I've seen many such in China where there is just room for one white van to squeeze past another that has two wheels on the pavement.

I sometimes worry about doing any layout work after I've had a glass of red wine (or two)....

 

Last night I decided to deal with the road width issue by narrowing the pavement in front of the building that is already glued in place on the layout ......... I hope I haven't made a bad decision!!

I have managed good progress to-day .................

 

I've been working on the platform for the industrial station using downloadable paving stone paper.

 

One issue that I've had to consider is  the height of the platform .......after viewing photos of the real thing, the model platform is approx. a scale 2ft off baseboard level which allows the platform to move closer to the track as steps and loco valve gear that might clash with a taller platform now pass harmlessly above the platform surface

 

Another issue was surface texture .... the paving sheets are pre-weathered that means that the basic colour of stones vary considerably and so joining sheets needs careful thought. Also each sheet is a maximum of 9 inches long and the platform will be 120 inches long so care is needed to prevent weathering patterns repeating as this doesn't happen in real life.

 

This section is 'complete' and shows the platform mounted signal box and space for a station building ........

This photo shows part completed components laid out to give an impression of the length of the platform and this is just half of the final 10ft length - not bad for an industrial railway.

This photo shows the original width road and how much I can widen it having narrowed the pavement and moved the platform slightly closer to the track than before when it was slightly higher.....

With me now 'burning' holiday each week at work I get three days a week to work full time on the layout. About the same amount of progress as two days a week - but more pleasant!

 

Since my printer packed uip I have been relying on friends, coleagues etc for printing downloaded paving sheets and of course the colours didn't match.

 

So I bought myself a new printer...................... and guess what...................

 

Printed on the same printer on the same paper at the same settings on consequtive days .... the colours didn't match!!!!

Luckily I printed enough yesterday that with a considerable amount of knitting together I have managed to complete the platform....

Actually, since that photo I have decided to extend the platform another 4 inches to give that typical long platform and short train look of Chinese industrials.
