I had hoped to post lots of positives (because there are plenty) but also a few negatives  ...

Having completed the industrial platform I decide to paint the area around the coal roads, but in doing so I spilt black paint over the platforms....

One advantage of using these square panels is that it's quite easy to cut them out, so I did and replaced them......

I looked at every commercial option with regards working crossing gates. Faller, Pola, Veissmann ...... but their designs were all a bit too posh, too modern, too flash ........ this is for not much more than an railway access road and something more rural and less state of the art was needed and I think this design fits the bill better.

I've done a huge amount of work on the layout this week, but with very little to show for it....

I've been working on several areas/topics at the same time including trying to perfect a decent wall to separate the main lines from trhe industrial area.

Also I've returned to the final tenement which I originally built some time ago but which has suffered rather over the last 12 months or so with quite a bit of damage as it has been moved around on and off the layout

More later - hopefully showing some progress!

Update on the tenement - with pavement/floor added and the beginnings of shop fronts and a few more AC units

Have been experimenting with the walling ..... I prefer the colour/weathering on the upright on the left ....

Have spent yet another day working for several/many hours but with little to show for it.

Completed the third tank car from the kits/bits I bought from a dealer ...... had to make/bodge some parts as there were parts missing. The very complicated handrails were made for me by fellow Twickenham MRC member Brian Self - thanks Brian.

post-4476-0-24546800-1499031885_thumb.jpg

Each tank car has taken approx 3-4 hours to assemble from the parts supplied - partly due to having to make parts that were missing.

Then later in the day completed this stock box - the beginning of Mixed Train # 4 for the sequence.

The other big issue I've been trying to address is the concrete wall.

I think it needs to be made as a (near) 5ft strip and placed on the layout in one go - I was worried that joining 9 inch long strips together and making the longer strips strong enough to manhandle  stripwould be difficult - it's proved to be quite easy.

The two long strips in this photo are actually two short strips joined togethe and I'm confident that I can extend the strips to nearly 5ft ...

post-4476-0-16730100-1499068543_thumb.jpg

The reason that I say nearly 5ft is that I think that the ends near the baseboard joins will need to be cut back and a add-on bit added across the board join when the boards are together - I'm working on that idea now!

Have spent this week working steadily away, but with very little to show for the effort - sound familiar??

One thing I've done today is replace/upgrade some of the shop signs that have become tatty with handling the biuildings or just needed improving.

I've also bought a new printer and that has also produced different/better results.

For example the original supermarket sign was in my opinion somewhat gaudy, too bright .....

post-4476-0-60890900-1499374121_thumb.jpg

The new version seems (to me) more realistic ....

I have been making progress - honest!

The next set of buildings will have a motor mechanic / garage. I've struggled to find a sign, but eventually used this one....

After some computer help from my friend Grant Alderson from Twickenham MRC it now looks like this ...

Another thing I've been working on is the concret fence/wall to runn alongside the mainlines

Have completed four sections each approx 2.5ft. Will make them into 5ft sections before planting on layout one length per board - approx 18ft eventually in length.

Sorry it's such a poor photo due to flash

It's the CMRA Modellers Day on Saturday and we're taking half the layout (the fours cenic boards plus the first FY board at each end) as a demo stand.

We will be adding the Faller roadway system which will run the whole length of the layout. Here are the two FY stacked and ready to go. You can see the reverse loops for the car system.

post-4476-0-26197600-1499895915_thumb.jpg

Whilst doing some work so that FY boards 1 & 8 stack perfectly (see above) I discovered some damaged boards. At a previous work day one board had fallen an the plywood sides had been damaged - the plywood had beed crushed on impact. So I took the opportunity to cut out the crushe ends and splice in some new ply and filler.

post-4476-0-38115500-1499895899_thumb.jpg

I glued in tenement #5 (nearest to camera), but to my horror I discovered that tenement # 4 had previously been glued in and was wonky - ie not vertical.

post-4476-0-15110500-1499895938_thumb.jpg

Tenement # 4 is so well glued in that I cannot move it without doing grave damage. And so have resorted to 'breaking the building away from the pavement and forcing in a piece on 40 thou plasticard which has forced the building vertical.

post-4476-0-37181800-1499895954_thumb.jpg

I will need to trim and paint the plasticard and try to disguise it in some way.

This photo shows the white plasticard which I have had to force into the front of the building in order to make it upright.

This shows the garage sign on the layout and the latest tement (#5) to be permanently fixed down. It also shows the industrial railway platform.

A lot of progress made at the CMRA Modellers Day today. Lots of problems addressed - even though we didn't know of some of the problems until we set the layout up!

No running today - just work

1. Burnt out transformer replaced and power box PAT tested

2. Leg strut replaced

3. Concrete wall installed on two boards - photo later

4. Al worked on the Faller roadway system. In particular the road/rail crossing including a point which will give the vehicles the option to either cross the tracks or dive off down the access road.

post-4476-0-86874000-1500140933_thumb.jpg

We mocked up a lorry park where the van has to duck and dive between the parked trucks.

As promised, here is a photo of the concrete wall. It separates the main lines from the industrial railway.

post-4476-0-81979800-1500277438_thumb.jpg

As anyone who knows me would tell you, I am never happy with anything I do - I can always do better!  And so it was with the garage sign, the first version looked dull with no sparkle. So it will be replaced with version #2  which has a bit more sparkle.......

A whole day modelling and nothing completely new to report - just some upgrades to stuff I've already done.

One thing we noticed at the CMRA event was that one shop in particular was over bright. It was one where I had not softened the stark white light with a filter and as a consequence the light was not only colder (like flourescent) but brighter too. So set out to deal with that by resetting the two LEDS in series, only to discover that I still had eight GOW bulbs that had not been replaced with LEDS.

So have spent the day replacing those eight GOW bulbs, but that only brought on another problem - light balance. I will be able to increase/decrease lights in the buildings on each board separately as determined by the ambient light level in the exhibition hall. But I needed to balance each shop more accurately with its neighbours.

This was very time consuming because of the size of my shed - I can't get both sides of a board when its on my work table. So had to set up from the back to make changes to the lighting and then somehow turn the board in order to see the result and then back again to make further changes .....

post-4476-0-68464700-1500567938_thumb.jpg

After eight hours work this is the final balance on board # 1, building #1 has no shops and so this is building # 2 .....

post-4476-0-81415700-1500566720_thumb.jpg

And this is building # 3.....

Paul's layout is coming on a treat. As the scenery goes on its really starting to look like urban Industrial China.

For my part, I've been helping out with the goods vehicles. This is the latest one - before and during shots.

It started out life as a Wiking Royal Mail truck, and after a little bit of work and a coat of green paint, will end up as a DongFeng China Mail truck.

Only a dozen or so more to go.

Apologies, this is a blatant 'plug' .................

At various demo sessions several people have asked about the security bars on my buildings .....

post-4476-0-95610300-1501168925_thumb.jpg

post-4476-0-76558100-1501168975_thumb.jpg

They are made in the USA by MonsterModelworks. Due to a very unfortunate mix up my last order for them was duplicated and I can't send them back. And so I have quite a few unopened packets left over and want to sell them.

I am currently listing the simple style on ebay ......

post-4476-0-78679900-1501168945_thumb.jpg

Each pack contains eight sets of bars and they will fit windows from about 14mm x 14mm (as seen on my buildings) to a maximum of 17mm x 15mm.

In some cases I have knitted 1.5 sets together again as seen on my buildings. I'm selling them on ebay at £6.50 a pack (which is less than they cost me when you take all the extra costs involved - shipping, duty, VAT) and I could do them a little cheaper if anyone wants to send me a PM.

There are two styles in use on the layout. Here is the second more ornate one....

post-4476-0-25928500-1501169988_thumb.jpg

Now as you can see, this second style is the same width but taller 0.96 inches whatever that is in mm.

I have cheated on my buildings and cut these down to the same overall height as the other style - very fiddly but it can be done!

Sales promo ends!

I reckon you should just make a load more buildings to use them up Paul...
