Not really an update.

Popped up to Reading Beer Festival yesterday, had some good ales, but none really outstanding. With several hundred available trying them all isn't really an option  Stayed in Reading overnight, and then straight up to the Bristol show at Thornbury. Bumped into Al Reynolds(Barry Ten) and had a natter. It was nice to see his Paynestown layout there in new hands. Picked up some bits and bobs, including a Bachmann Collectors Club S&DJR P.O wagons. No, I'm not back dating, but my Golden Arrow 7F will be re-liveried to LMS for a 'heritage' train of Somerset Coalfield wagons. I wish I never got rid of those 30-40 Cambrian ones I had. :banghead: But I suppose I they did fetch some very good money.

Right. Still no work on the layout. It seems that if there is a God, he doesn't like me. Every day off I have at the moment it rains. I could go and do work on the layout, but I know if I do start work on the next section, I will want to finish it. So I've promised myself, no work on the layout until the decking is finished. But instead of sitting on my arse backside and twiddling my thumbs, I've been building a couple of wagons, a bit of weathering/detailing of loco's and getting started on my Comet/Bachmann Bulleid conversions. At least I don't get wet.

Well May has come and nearly gone. Should get the decking finished this weekend. It's taken longer than expected, but early May saw rain on my rest days and shine on my work days.

Funny enough, I've been building decking rather than modelling.

However, I'm sure the brownie points thus earned will come in useful....

Ordered the main timber yesterday, only to find they can't deliver until Monday. Oh well, it's pi55ing down here at the moment, so wouldn't have got much done today. All the supports are in, so pretty much lots of screwing to do.

In the meantime, my Realtrack 143 is sitting opposite me at my neighbour where it was left by the postie yesterday.

143 619 makes it's début on Gurney Slade. Like the 150 seen earlier, this is a model of a unit I have worked many times in the past, but fortunately no longer.

Three more rest days should see the decking finished. Shan't be this weekend though, Le Mans beckons, even if I'm only watching it on Eurosport. Well stocked with delicacies from that part of France and will be shutting myself off from the outside world around lunchtime on Saturday.

After a few fine weather days that coincided with my rest days, the decking has been finished.

New toy arrived yesterday. A Salisbury Black Motor. OK, not a type seen on the S&D, but a loco I've always had a soft spot for. And being a Salisbury loco it would, most likely, have found it's way to Templecombe. And if it went there, it could find itself replacing a failed 3F.

Anyhow. A few days off next week will see resumption of work on Gurney Slade.

Still not done any modelling, mostly been doing video requests for fellow modellers at work. Now, one of the things I like about the S&D is the rich variety of rolling stock that was seen and that presents a problem with storage. While I've never kept wagons in their boxes, they've been stored in divided trays or boxes from ticket stock from work, coaches have always been stored in their original boxes. Doing these videos it became a pain the the backside getting them out and putting away, so I borrowed an idea from many others on RMweb and started using box files.

post-15-0-62991800-1436108824_thumb.jpg

Lined with Depron foam left over from underlay and with blocks of foam to cushion the ends. Each box holds 5 coaches, so two files for the standard 10 coach set, or 2 and 3 car local. Tesco seems to be the cheapest, but they only have two on display at a time in my local one, so 8 weeks until I get enough, but not too taxing putting them together.

Annual leave next week and nowhere to go, so a return to scenery building. In the meantime, I picked up this beauty today.

post-15-0-99493700-1436989916_thumb.jpg

Another of my favourite loco's and one which I am sure would have worked well over the S&D. My thoughts on this model are in the 3MT thread in the Bachmann section. Also collected another couple of Porthole Staniers to finish my Pines Express roster. Hopefully Hornby's latest loco-drive 2P will be here soon to complete my compliment of S&D locos, although there may be room for a re-chassied Bachmann Ivatt 2MT tank as and when.

Hi Jules, Hopefully we'll see some nice scenic next week then, good stuff.

I like your Stock Boxes, I will need to look out for those, as I need some Coach and Wagon Boxes. When I was exhibiting I used some old photographic Slide Boxes, divided into 5 it would take five long Locos. or with one the other way, 5 medium and one short.

I do like the 3MT, there a nice size Loco, I'm looking forward to the re release of the 2MT very soon.

All the best and enjoy the scenics next week.

Not quite a resumption of work, that'll be tomorrow.

I don't have a workbench thread, so tend to air this aspect on here. Now what some of you may have gathered from my previous layouts, Somercombe and Tolmouth, is as well as Southern and S&D, I have a liking for the Western Region's hydraulics and for that reason, I have a fleet of 9. Three of these are Heljan Westerns and while a few things have been said about the inaccuracies on them, they are head and shoulders above the previous offerings from Hornby and Lima and I personally don't think they are that bad to get rid of them and replace with Dapol's offering. One thing that has been a bugbear is the wheels. I bought all of mine fairly early and they had the old 'dirt magnet' wheels. These were replaced with new ones when they became available, but Heljan have never made the new style wheels available as spares. As far as I am concerned, the wheels are one of the most defining features of these loco's, plain discs just don't do it. So, after weighing up the options, I purchased a conversion set of Alan Gibson wheels. Aaaaaaagghh. They have 8 holes. What to do? send them back and order Ultrascales? Mmm, twice the price and a 6 month waiting list. I could have been struck by lightning by then. So, calmed down, I fill the surplus holes and do you know what? They look OK. Not quite the correct profile, but by the time they get weathered, I think they will be just fine. So, what do you think?

All the point motors are now wired up and more importantly, they all work. One minor problem with a soldered joint on one and it just had to be the most difficult one to get at, but one twisted neck later, problem solved. Fascia boards will be installed tomorrow and I can then go to town on the rest of the scenery.

Gave the Western a run today. Had to tweak the pick-ups somewhat, but it runs OK. A few more days of running and I'll decide on getting more Gibsons or get Ultrascales.

So, back to work in Miller's Vale. Kingspan™ fixed down ready for a liberal covering of PVA.

Work continues in Miller's vale. Must get some E-Z water for the brook, but nowhere locally has any in stock. Fairly happy with the result here. The tree is yet to be anchored and the one on the other bank will be much closer to the water's edge. This will also help disguise the fact that the brook disappears into nothing.

A few more of progress in Miller's Vale.

post-15-0-19796800-1437922601_thumb.jpg

76053 hauls vans towards Green Park.

post-15-0-63601000-1437922558_thumb.jpg

And later returns on a semi-fast to Bournemouth. A two rail fence, as at Midford, will go along the viaduct parapet. Also there is a bit more work required behind the viaduct.

post-15-0-52951600-1437922621_thumb.jpg

A long look across the Vale from the back of the station.

At the moment I am concentrating on getting the landscape structure down and any buildings placed, detailing it with fences, trees and hedges can be done later. Though a little may be added for photo opportunities.

Bit more work done today.

Tidied up behind the viaduct. This area was always going to be difficult, blending the brook and a viaduct into an essentially flat backscene. The view through here will be disguised by a couple of strategically placed trees.

post-15-0-43570400-1438102705_thumb.jpg

Fitted the stanchions and rails to the parapet. Miscalculation here. I though I was OK for stanchions, but ended up one short. Oh well, I'm in Gloucester tomorrow, so a trip to Antics is in order.

That join between the viaduct and the Will's sheet, looks far worse in photo's than it actually is, so disguised it with some ivy.

Work and a few jobs around the house have put the kibosh modelling this week. But I did manage a DCC sound test.

First test Schools, with Hornby sound.

Second, with Autumn sound, though I do think it sounds more like winter

And finally with summer sounds.

Work has continued. Most updates on this have been put on a Facebook group these days as I find I get more feedback there than I do here, but that's probably down to the fact that I don't discuss which biscuits I had with this morning's coffee. But hey, ho.

So, here are a few of the progress in the corner forming the lower end scenic break.

I still continue to potter.

Made up some road signs. Dart Castings posts and printed the wording on white transfer paper.

You may think that the bubblecar driver forgot to put on his hand brake, but the truth is it is supporting the post while the glue sets.

Scout camp. The hedgerow around it is made from rubberised horse hair with WS flock. Tents are vacuum formed and were picked up on eBay.

Entrance to Emborough Colliery. Slightly restricted heightwise, so will have a NOT TO PASS board restricting BR loco's.

By the way, chocolate chip HobNobs with this mornings cuppa.
