Thanks to my brother for finding this shot of Ranelagh bridge, will be using this picture on the layout when it goes on tour next year.

Two confirmed bookings in new year, the Stafford show and also off to the BRM show at Doncaster.

Managed a few hours on the work bench today, the spray booth stage is almost here, before the big day hopefully as I've done all the shopping, only the wrapping left.

I have been collecting anything I can to furnish the plant, whilst the front of the structure will contain the tall towers and pipes, the back needs to be filled up with detail. So, following a bulk purchase from the Internet of 2,4,6,8,&10mm styrene tube I bought a bag full of 8mm and 10mm solder T and L copper bends, as well as olives to use as flanges for the pipe work, the following pictures are of the household items I have so far used, ranging from

Blister packs for pet care,

Air fresheners, old curtain hanger runners, the tank remnants of Hornby TTAs stripped for when I built castle works a few years back,.(chuck nowt out.)

Electrical conduit corners, HO containers, cotton thimbles for a sewing machine, found in the pound shop,

Not a good time to type having spent the last three hours in the Old pens rugby club, but here goes,

Spent the day in the the loft, all ready for flooring tomorow and the new hatch and ladders, short of some timber so an early morning shopping spree to Band Q then back up there, the plan is to have the base boards in situ by Sunday evening, and track laying starting next week,

Yippee. Me time.

The great relocation is well and truly underway, the floor is down and the underside of the rafters and beneath the purlins is all insulated. A basic re wire with an extension lead through the airing cupboard floor gets the juice flowing. Whilst the old hatch was enlarged to accommodate a ladder / hatch combo, the opening was suitable to get my spray booth out the garage and up in the loft. But it's now stuck there for ever......

I used to occupy the Leakey garage for the current layout , and that currently on tour, and spraying, the shed for the storage of stock and trestles etc, and then my office in the spare room for actual modelling. So this weekend has seen all three moved up into the loft,

When I ordered the loft hatch I thought 1200x500 was ample but didn't realise that the internal access space is only just 450mm.

Fortunately the tower units on my model are 400mm so they will just fit through and likewise Ranelagh bridge is 420mm boxed up tomorow will see if that fits up there too.

Progress pictures show the all new with knobs, man cave.

Gave the spray booth a test run and dusted over the main elements of the chemical plant, then arranged them to get a feel for the size of it on the boards, a walthers ethanol processing plant came in the post today from Invictor models, brilliant service and value for money,

Need a few of the Pikestuff buildings now for the container terminal office, CJ minibus hire garage, and the polybulk unloading shed.

Also sourced. A pair of Polybulks on the classifieds earlier so

I can vouch for the limited size of the loft hatch ..... it confirmed my New Years resolution for me !!!!!!!

.

You've certainly cracked on.

Will we see you later Bro ?

.

If so, bring a Polybulk for me to *"@?+*^" over !

.

Big Bro.

Bit more wok over the weekend, track pinned in place and the holes drilled for the cobalt motors, fitted a peco inspection pit which will be adapted as the unloading base of the Polybulks with a scratch built shed over the top.

The basic track plan is now pinned and all isolated so the soldering iron will be out soon for the track feed droppers.

With the track down the space for the plant is now evident and required a bit of re jigging, the complex visual elements of the plant can now be installed and painted as we go, this will take longer than I thought,

  • 2 weeks later...

Recently placed an order for plastruct beams and lattice beams, found it as cheap as I could but still £30.00 for bits.....

Measured up for the knightwing security palisade fencing, there is 24" in a pack, and I need a 16' run to match the location.

Whaaaaaaaaaa. That's the best part of £64 on fencing.

Time to offload some stock on the classifieds to offset that one.

Wish I hadn't chucked all the old stock boxes out now.

Doh.

The layout has had its first enquiry for exhibiting, hopefully it will be at the cardiff show this autum dates are the weekend of the 16th October. It's good to have a deadline, focus the mind "an that" as Mr John Rance would say.

Tonight has been just an hour of gluing up short lengths of tubing with knightwing pipe flanges for the ducting on the plant.

Progress is slow and steady.

Awaiting the EMA plastruct parts, so in mean time have drawn up the large yellow dis charge tower rigs that take the STOLT tankers and unload to the nearby windmill tank farm.

Located next to the dock security office u have tried to scale them based on other features nearby like the doors on the power hut.

I will build three of them which will stand on the back of the baseboard which is intended to represent the dock side.

Turning my thoughts to the back scene, I am getting a proper camera for my very special birthday next Friday.

So the plan is to take some landscape shots from Jewsons of Dock view road, and also of the plant, then digital stitch them into a 12' long image,

Really good day, saw the push pull NR 37s through Cogan at lunchtime, then had a few hours on the baseboards,

They are now wired with the track feed droppers soldered up and a quick lash up made to test.

So at 2015 this evening the first movement took place with a Bachmann 37 hauling a Hornby container fret the length of the layout,

A good step forward, next will see the Cobalts added and the wiring fixed,

Hoping the styrene beams from EMA will turn up this week, have started the support frames and using florist wire to add the cross bracing, one srprayed up in grey primer is shown on the White paper in the picture.

Friday I picked up a dozen 300mm long lengths of hanrIl cut on the laser by Wattsy. Sprayed yellow these were glued onto the walkways added to the plant, this is now taking more shape,

The walthers factory was cut down to better fit the footprint on the base board, the remnant will be bashed into the garage for CJ minibus hire.

It's my birthday this week so little progress is expected.

Frames built for elevated pipeline supports, primed with halfords spray, then a grey graphite metallic coat and a cheap blast over with a chrome colour from the local £1 shop. The bridging sections are treated the same, all currently being left to dry,

Received a new canon eos camera for my significant birthday over the weekend, so, better picture quality in future hopefully of progress on the layout,

Quiet week as tidying up work also underway in Ranelagh bridge ready for Stafford this weekend.

Ttfn.

I do enjoy seeing updates on this one. That chemical plant is very impressive! Nice work. It looks like it needs some 'steam' drifting out of it somewhere, small dry-ice/smoke machine hidden in it maybe? Would be very atmospheric at exhibitions.

Had a similar thought about using a seuth smoke generator, in a few of the towers, the funny point of note is you seldom see anything coming out of the stacks during the day, in a way that I remember the fumes at llanwern or Port talbot.

Different story in the evenings though.........

Can't help myself, now it's wired I've been running the odd loco, erected the raised steel frames and laid out the container terminal for a test session, this allows me to hopefully to iron out any niggles like poor clearances and poor sight lines.
