Connoisseur Models LNER Lowmac 20T Reference Material?

Don't you just love that fantastic feeling when you finish a model and prime it ready for painting? I know I do! Having recently completed one of Connoisseur Models excellent LNER Lowmac's in Brass I was really excited to get painting and weathering, but wait.. I can't for the life of me find any reference pictures to use for painting and weathering. Can anyone help?

The kit is of an LNER Low Machine Wagon 20 Ton Lowmac - L and as quoted from Jim's site:

PROTOTYPE. Ten of these wagons were built in 1913 by the NER for the transportation of traction engines and heavy machinery. The wagons were designed so that tall road engines could be driven onto them from an end loading dock and then secured on the well deck within the railway loading gauge. These wagons ran in service into the 1960’s as British Railways Lowmac EL.

After searching Google for a considerable amount of time and a number of other places, I've come up with nothing. It's easy to find pictures of Lowmac's from other regions and differing designs, I just can't seem to come up with any pictures of this one. Ideally I'm looking for the rusted/beat up type, if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very much obliged.

The only photograph I have come across is on page 98 of Peter Tatlow's "A Pictorial Record of LNER Wagons" - ISBN 0 902888 92 7.

It shows NE 68932 in service with what appears to be a crippled SR open wagon as a load. The photograph is monochrome and so may not be of much help with weathering.

Regards.

I can't see how one of these would have weathered any differently or been treated especially differently by painters than any other Lowmac? Since there were only 10 of the things and it's unlikely that they made it much past c. 1960 as BR renewed its fleet and reduced its size there may simply be no pictures. The only LNER vehicle close to that vintage in Paul Bartlett's collections, for example is this one:

This was presumably sold out of service either by the LNER or, more likely, by BR and might, if the GNR axlebox is any guide, be a GNR vehicle. You may simply have to go for a 'best guess' on this one.

Thank you all for your replies, I knew some great information would be passed along. It seems this Lowmac is more unique than most, something I never thought of when I purchased it, still, since any sort of pictorial evidence is sparse at best it gives me pretty much free reign on how I weather it. Sounds good in my book. :good:

I managed to get a set of 4mm etches for this wagon, which have been a joy to put together. However there are no castings and Jim when asked about the axle boxes pointed me just to the Wizzard site.

Can anyone please tell me what sort of Axle box is fitted to these wagons and if anyone knows of a manufacturer in 4mm which supplies them?

Cheers

They'll be on the Wizard site under 51L. I take it they are NER types. Post 1913 they would be oil rather than grease.

I've a feeling these are the type you need. But I'm not positive.

Thanks Jason, that's brilliant. I know my way round locos, but wagons are a mystery!
