JM Design CIE Coach Sides to fit Dapol 60' Stanier Coach

I have been looking at using the Airfix/GMR 60' Stanier coach as a donor body with etched brass sides for the 1st batch of main line coaches introduced by CIE in the 1950s.

Dapol have released these coaches in kit form http://Dapol.co.uk/index.php?route=p...roduct_id=1319

Several coach types were produced including: Buffet Car, Open Second, Side Corridor Second, Side Corridor Composite, Brake Second (railcar driving trailer). The coaches were initially introduced to provide modern trailer stock to run with the AEC railcars and later were widely used as hauled stock on both main and branch lines. Many of the corridor coaches were converted to Brake Steam Generator Vans to replace the tin vans on suburban trains, a sizable number of these coaches made it into preservation with the GSRPS, WISRA and more recently the DCDR

I am looking initially at sides for the Buffet and one of the Brake Steam Generator Vans to fit the Dapol body shell, with other varieties to follow if there is interest for 10 or more of each type.

The basic idea is to supply sides only to fit the Dapol body shell, and produce a correct scale length/width body shell if there is sufficient interest.

This is an excellent suggestion, for those of us modelling the fifties/sixties era and maybe beyond a bit - I don't know how many of these survived until the great "cull" of the eighties.

If I might make a suggestion, I would maybe start with the heating van and an open or corridor  full second. most folk who may want a rake will need more seconds than anything else! I found this when I did some GNR etched sides for use on r-t-r donors.

Best wishes for your project

Colm

Its looking much brighter for Irish modellers now. I just tok delivery of some of the Worsley Works GNRI flush sides scale to fix Airfix Staniers for the UMRC's new layout based on Lisburn. I'm not well up on irish stock as I model the Carlisle area, but if somebody can tell me that this type of coach regualrly worked north to Belfast then I am sure some will be findingtheir ay to Belfast. Keep up the good work!

The coach sides done by Allen are of the K15 a very common open 3rd coach, the l12, similar but a brake end design, and F16 composite, as well as the B9 buffet. the last mentioned definitely regularly worked the Derry Road, and was converted to run with BUT railcars there.  I have a picture of an F16 on the same line. The L12s I am sure were also found north of the border and the k15 was a very common widely used coach. So any or all of them can easily be justified as passing through Lisburn in either GNR or UTA days. I don't know whether any survived long enough to run in NIR times.

At some point I was going to respray some of the Dapol/Airfix/Mainline/whatever brand they appeared under that week (along with Hornby Staniers as shortened Bredins as featured in the Modelling Irish Railways book that appeared before Murphy's Models changed Irish Modelling with their top notch stuff.

Bogie replacement may be problematic for some, not everyone has access to toy fairs with an abundance of scrapboxes or cheap Mk2d's which had a B4 bogie that would plug directly without any changes in to the Stanier underframe. Hornby may have some after the debacle in the factory that saw GWR suburban coaches fitted with B4s. I would doubt that Hornby would make a batch for anyone else. Not a problem if LMS patern bogies ran with the coaches of course.

I did try Replica B4 bogies under the Dapol Stanier's but would need work. Not everyone is adept with using some of the more specialist tools that many modeller's here use and I include myself in that now.

I would like to have a steam generator van and more but would have to go straight to a complete body.

Am sorry for the negative bits here, anything that helps Irish modellers I'm all for (am very slowly building an Irish diarama, my first layout in over thirty years).

Hi Colm,

Rereading my last post, I wasn't very clear. It was the JM Designs coaches I was wondering about. If they made it north to Belfast via Lisburn I would probably order a few for use on our layout.

The Worsley Work etches are very nice and my only worry is forming a tumblehome thats consistent throughtout the rake. I also got a couple of NCC F2s from Allan, one for use in an NCC excursion train and the other for my own LMS rake. The panelling is very nicely done and the F2 can be modified to make other coaches. I'm thinking about modifying some NCC stock into MPDs as well and havebeen following the other thread on that. By any chance do you have any formation set numbers recorded for these units that operated through Lisburn from time to time? I'll pick your brains at Carrick next week.

Apart from a short period of MK2D operation in the Mid 1970s CIE tended to run mixed rakes of conventional stock on the Dublin based Enterprise. The Buffet cars regularly operated on the Enterprise along with Craven and older stock until the train was upgraded to MK2D stock in the early 80s.

Most of the side corridor seconds and composites were converted to Brake Standard and Brake Standard Generator Van configuration during the early-mid 70s, however its possible that side corridor stock worked through to Belfast both on the Enterprise and specials.

Thanks John,

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread and will be ordering some sides when they are ready in that case.

The donor coaches are Dapol 60' Stanier Coaches. Plastic is removed from the area between the windows leaving a strip below the waist and a narrow strip above the windows. The sides are fixed in place with contact adhesive.

Comet Kits RTR Conversions and Building Coaches the Comet Way http://www.cometmodels.co.uk/ are probably the best instruction for this type of modification.

Comet recommend gluing the roof to the body before cutting out the sides when carrying out this sort of conversion. The flush glazing units on original Airfix/GMR/Dapol coaches were also used to lock the body in place on the floor and locate the roof.

I have built the models with removable roofs clipped in place to strips cut from the old glazing units glued to the remains of the Dapol sides.

I may be possible to kitbash the Dapol interior to fit the Side Corridor coach or scratchbuild an interior using plasticard and Ratio or Comet coach seats.

J M Design overlays for Dapol coaches

I am trying to establish if there is sufficient interest to add further coach sides to the Buffet & Corridor Second released last year.

The illustrations are in green because I was too lazy to draw them in black & tan

Originally built 1953 classified as 3rds built to run as railcar trailers 1356-1371 were the first of CIEs family of 64 seat standard open coaches.

These coaches were also very close in outline to 1497-1503 some of the last traditional coaches built at Inchacore in the early 1960s.

post-7338-0-16214500-1430302317_thumb.jpg

Originally classified as brake 3rds and introduced in 1953 some of these coaches were converted to driving trailers for use with the AEC railcars on the Westland Row-Galway & Westport "Cu na Mara" express service.

One of these coaches was later fitted with storage heaters for use on the Ballina Branch

These coaches seem to have originally been introduced with guards look outs, some of which were later plated over, separate frets would be required for coaches with or without lookouts.

Almost modern image introduced in 1978 Brake Steam Generator Van converted from 1953 Side Corridor Coach

This fret will be a tad more expensive than the ordinary coaches and a bit more involved to build as the van doors will have be engraved on a separate section of the fret to the sides.

I am looking at expressions of interest for a minimum run of 6 of any one type.
