This was Lapford when it had a bit more track. They must have been taken some time between about 1988 and 1994, as my Claud Butler touring bike is just visible leaning against the railings in the fourth photo. I started cycling in the late 80s after a long gap, and got my Dawes Galaxy in 1994!

I've got 78 taken on the same day, or rather I've scanned 78, but there may be more. A friend and I had a long weekend in Barnstaple, and these were taken the day we got the train to Crediton and cycled back. We also cycled most of the Tarka Trail, and to Braunton. Most of my prints aren't dated, and a lot haven't been scanned yet.

The sidings at Lapford were still used for the fertilizer trains until the early 1990s - one of my books suggests they finished 1993. The wagons are visible in the 3rd image - a continental style which replaced the "PWA" Procor wagons at some stage.

Interestingly Part of the siding to what used to be part of the old Ambrosia factory (which for the greater part is now a removal company) was considered for re-use. The owner of the firm who is very well know to me, both socially and through my professional life, when I was working, approached "the rail company" to see if it could be re-instated. He wanted to use it to transport container traffic for his business but was turned down ( reasons unknown to me). What a great shame IMHO that the proposal wasn't accepted.

As some of you may know, the station is very underused these days (reasons unknown again) and as a regular user on this line, having spoken to several of the rail staff they wish it was a regular stop too.

Though I'd post my opinions and experience about Lapford, hope you don't mind.

Phone through to Crediton before leaving Barnstaple to order the cake

But I wont know if the train I am booked to pass at Eggesford is on time or not, if its late then I wont have time at Crediton to pick up the cake.

Some lovely shots of Barnstaple Darren. I just missed seeing the island platform buildings as they were demolished shortly before my first visit there.

Now to the oppposite end of the line at Cowley Bridge Junction  in 1985.

EDIT - it was closed by the itme I took these.

What an entertaining thread. I have fond memories of this line as a Secondman working to Barny! I remember taking the papers and parcels at some unearthly hour from platform 2 at St. Davids. Still quite a lot of freight in the seventies but never anything for Lapford.

When was this, Grahame, I wasn't aware of any such proposals...

Now for something a little further north than Barnstaple.

Not the best of photos but this was the 'Last Atlantic Coast Express' to Torrington in November 1982 in very poor weather.

Not sure who the chap is standing in front of the 31 but he was there for sometime having his photo taken.

Some great photos, but is it just me that's seeing them all over the place?!

Pictures different in quotes, signatures and profile pics appearing in posts all blown up etc etc.

Looking at the shots from the 'driver's eye' film, I wonder if the signalling was still being commissioned? There seemed to be a lot of flagging/waving the train from the base of the boxes by the signalmen, whilst it's difficult to tell in some cases whether signals are 'on' or 'off'. In one case, both the signal for the track the train was on, and that for the adjacent platform, seemed to be off.

Got any photos of the temporary footbridge, please Grahame?

Didn't take any today KC ( should have done as a matter of course - quick kick up the backside!) I will do this week and post them here :)

Ironically, as I came off onto the Barnstaple platform a young mother with two lively children remarked " doesn't feel very safe does it !"

Trying to hide my laughter I reassured her all was correct and very safe having been erected by professionals who make safety their first priority. It seemed to allay her fears.
