Yesterday I attended the Sheffield model railway event but didn't get the accessories I wanted there, so placed orders for two more packs of Scenecraft palisade fencing and Dapol catenary masts for delivery by Easter weekend.

 

Preparations are on going so I can fit Scenecraft's fencing, once the bulk order arrives.

 

This included fitting an EFE LT bus stop - however it's without a shelter as the Creative Master Northcord versions which would have been appropriate for 1990s-2000s era are no longer available and hard to get

I've used up all of my current stock of Scenecraft's palisade fencing ...

The fencing makes a lot of difference to the station - it's becoming fortified!

The Dapol catenary masts and Scenecraft palisade fencing all arrived by yesterday, so I've "securely" fenced around the station and planted three masts.

I won't string any contact wire because the masts are only going to be fitted on one board and it's sufficient for me to achieve an impression of overhead catenary.

As a trial, I've put away my recently worked-on "Old Oak and Brent" station board in its dedicated storage box. I want to see how well the fittings cope whilst stored vertically in my spare room, particularly Dapol's dummy catenary masts and fencing with a view to correcting any problems as they arise.

 

In the meantime, I want to bring my sister layout "Westfield Priory" up to the same level of detail

Station lamps have been repainted in Silverlink style and street lamps painted in light grey, together with lineside boxes.

 

I'm including spares in case of transit and/or storage damage.

Silverlink details are on the PDF - stuck down onto home-made boards

 

- the BR sign was home-made using rub-down logos

Until my anti-trespass signs and posters arrive as part of another order from Sankey Scenics, work began on raising the height of the box housing the 715 x 147 mm single line terminus using an otherwise under-used card box, in order to permanently fix lamp posts and other fittings on the platform.

This time my station will be in Network SouthEast style.

My old Dart Castings lamps and etchings, plus my home-made fittings will be freshened up before incorporation into the station.

Only very few things to do on the "Old Oak & Brent" board now:

 

Included in this update are anti-trespass signs, some posters, video cameras monitoring the car park and bus stop, and buffer stop.

I'll try to source a miniature version of London's zone map on display at stations, although I'll defer adding a bus shelter (my excuse is that TfL removed the original after vandalism and its replacement was delayed)

I can now reveal the Network SouthEast station in all its glory:

 

It's called Fawcett Priory!

(named after my secondary school and its main road)

The station signs only arrived tonight by post and I found a way to reproduce an authentic "London Connections" zone map

I considered naming it "Longhedge" after the former SECR works but felt it needed a 4-car through station and some loco stabling sidings. As I have no more room to build another board, I've put this on the back burner.

Horniman Park is officially complete (at least for the time being).

I have no room at home to build any more modules.

 

I'll start looking at operations and stock, but not until after the bank holiday weekend.

 

Meanwhile, this is one example of how the individual modules go together:

Although little has been done to this layout since it was officially "completed" last year, from time to time, I might post information on some of my rolling stock development and modifications here, rather than putting that in a blog.

Here's one of my modifications:

 

Re-named and re-numbered Hornby Railroad Hall (R3499 - 6947 Helmingham Hall) late crest lined green livery to 5994 Roydon Hall

Fox Transfers etched name and number plates, no other modifications apart from very slight roughing of the printed name and numberplate areas to help key the etchings in place glued with Evostick.

 

There's more than one Roydon Hall in England, I think the GWR had this one in Kent in mind when it was named http://www.parksandgardens.org/places-and-people/site/2873?preview=1

 

However there's also another hall with the same name in Roydon, Norfolk, near Diss.

I'm preparing materials for another module, representing the LNER during the 20s and 30s.

Its name hasn't been decided yet.

This is a make-believe unadvertised private halt for the use of members and athletes belonging to a sports and social club owned by a wealthy landowner.

The platform is made from three Wills station kits with Ratio fencing, the two athletes posed on there were made many years ago for an abortive project and were patiently waiting for a chance to be used on a layout setting.

BTW this awaits painting and detailing.

 

I'll only be able to create room for the social club and a hint of athletics activity.

I hope to attend the Pontefract model event on Saturday - you never know, I may get hold of various bits and pieces to progress this latest module.

 

One possibility I'm considering is modelling the athletics club house using grounded railway carriage bodies.

 

I'll reveal my preferred name of the athletics club, once the club house's construction has sufficiently progressed.

Just returned from the Pontefract event and bought a few more bits and pieces:

Cheap repainted Triang clerestory brake;

Assembled Wills plastic garage kit - this will act as the athletics equipment store;

Packs of figures and bicycles, not all the figures suit the inter-war period, but will choose the most appropriate representations.

 

Also ordered a discounted Hornby Thomas battery loco, Annie and Clarabel pack, because the carriages are four-compartment versions, not the short three-compartment types more commonly seen.

Once they've arrived, I'll compare the four-compartment types with Triang's clerestory to see how well they match up dimensionally in order to decide on how to model the athletes' club house.

I own a few locos and rolling stock in pre-grouping condition and am realising that they haven't had a chance to show themselves on this layout in an appropriate setting.

 

Consequently, I'm broadening the era represented on the athletics club module to represent the years from Armistice Day 1918 to 3 September 1939.

The battery Thomas with Annie and Clarabel pack arrived this week and immediately I decided to only use them for the grounded body structure.

(The Triang clerestory brake will be set aside for future railway use)

This is only a temporary setup to see how things are progressing. Both bodies are glued end-to-end, but roofs are just a clip-fit at this stage.

 

I took advantage of the hole in the roof where the switch for the motorised carriage containing the motor and battery in order to add a chimney.

 

I also considered building a proper gable roof overhanging the carriage roofs, but opted for a simpler arrangement of adding a canopy section in grey above the doors on one side.

The roof will appear as though the pair of grounded bodies had little modification, so rainstrips will be added.

Made some progress on the clubhouse.

Base made from 3mm thick styrene sheet offcuts topped with 0.5mm planked sheet.

Canopy added but front supports won't be added until body and base have been painted.
