Oswestry Junction 2, N gauge BR late 80's to mid 90's

Hi guys, as i'm totally re-modelling my station, i thought i would start off a fresh thread.

To those who are familiar with my old thread, my layout was loosely based on the operations at Shrewsbury during the mid 80's to mid 90's.

Keeping with the same theme, i wasn't altogether happy with my old track plan.

Having altered it a couple of times, i still wasn't satisfied  .

Now here is the start of Oswestry Junction No.2, still loosely based on Shrewsbury, with North to West CrossCountry services routed via here and also West Midlands to Chester and also the Cambrian line services to Aberystwyth & Pwllheli which reverse here.

There is still a daily through loco hauled service from London Euston to Aberystwyth and also on summer saturdays B) .

The new station plan is to have 4 Platforms, of which 2 will be terminus platforms, one of which (Platform 3) is long enough to accomodate 6 coaches, the other two are through platforms which each are long enough to accomodate 8 coaches plus a locomotive. Both the through platforms will be bi-directional, and also the terminal platforms will have dead sections of track at the buffer stops so you can divide or couple up dmu's when required.

There are 3 stabling sidings at the south end of the station which are long enough to accomodate 4 car dmu's or coach rakes.

There is also a centre road between the through platforms which is for stabling a loco or dmu during peak times, or a freight train whilst the driver takes a PNB.

At the end of the terminal platforms there will be a small concourse facing the buffer stops, where i will construct a small overall roof to span the platforms. The longest of the Platforms 2 & 3 will have a canopy running for a good part of its length, & also a conopy will be cinstructed along Platform 4.

None of my stock is DCC, as for the moment i don't have the money for the converting...but i'm not ruling it out as a possibility in the future, also my points are all manual operated, still fun all the same

Yes this does look good; I especially like your overall roof - most effective.

In your pictures there is a very good proportion of DMU to loco-haulled, which does very much add to the impression your are trying to give. Then again, I'm biased...I like units!

WOW cool.gif I really like this, Good choice of era and location...

Keep up the good work and i will be following your progress

Cheers

Anthony

Thanks very much Anthony  , its coming along slowly. Unfortunatly i work away from home so only have a couple of days each week or the odd weekend to be able to get work done on the layout :( .

Ps ive took a look at your link, you have a great layout there too  .

Thankyou Claude_Dreyfus . I do have plenty of dmu's, as like yourself, i like my units ;) , 12 in all at the moment of a mixture class 108, 101 & 150 sprinters. I missed the run of provincial class 156's by Dapol unfortunatly, but will be having a couple of 153's in Regional livery when they become available soon hopefully.

I was pleased with my roof when i constructed it, though it was piecing it together that was a bit of a test of patience...especially when it collapsed on me at first....but after some tweaking, it fits over the station great now :)

Nice job. I particularly like the "short train in a long platform" effect that you get with the two-car units. Something that you see a lot in real life but not all that often in model form.

Is that extravagantly-arched bridge in the background based on a particular structure?

Hi Jim, & thanks for that :) . The bridge is actually one side of a model bridge my nan got from a jumble sale when i was a kid (don't laugh  ) LOL! She bought it as she thought it might look good with my train set i had at the time when i was about 8, it was a LIMA class 50 freight set.

When building the current layout, i thought it would look good as part of the background, as eventually i'll be adding a back scene to obscure the fiddle yard at the back of the layout, though not too high as i can't reach the trains B)

I remember seeing this on the old RMweb and really liking the pictures and the location. It brings back a lot of memories of the Class 47's hauling mk2 and 3 stock with a DVT in tow. One day I hope to assemble a layout that is similar to this one, although it will be probably based on somewhere "under the wires".

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your kind comments Stephen :D, same here about the memories  . An under the wires layout sounds great, especially with Dapol's class 86 on the cards soon :)

I think it's originally a Scalextric hump-backed bridge. I recall having one (two sides just like that and a piece of curved roadway which clips in between) when I was a kid. It's going to look like a much bigger, chunkier structure in 1:148, as Scalextric is 1:32...

Hi guys, well a bit of an update, i now have most of the main station structures in place. The overhall roof needed different glue to the 'UHU' glue i'd used, the whole thing was coming apart . PVA glue has thankfully now sorted that problem :D .

Here's some new pics ive taken today, the canopies are just 'in place' at the moment to see how they look before anything gets glued, though i will be keeping the canopies removeable to get access to clean the track ;)

Some pics ive taken with & without the flash as at times the flash on my camera is a bit harsh...

There's a really well observed mix of old and new in this layout which perfectly captures the railway I remember from the early 80s. I love the remains of an end-loading dock on the innermost siding, with road access now blocked by a new building - spot on. Looks like a fun layout too. Now if you could only find some smoke generators for those DMUs...

One thing that strikes me is that you might be better sacrificing a bit of Platform 2A to allow departures from the bays, as below. From the photos it looks like you've got just enough room to sneak the pointwork in.

BTW - where did you get that 150 in original livery? Is it a repaint, a special edition I've missed, or a Captain Electra special?

Cheers Flying Pig  , i see what you mean about the points to & from bay Platform 3, that is a great idea & will have a look to see what i can do there as i havn't been 100% myself about the point layout there, will check it out when i'm back home next week again (as i work away) ;) I'll hopefully not have to sacrifice any of Platform 2a looking at it just  , we shall see anyway. Wishfull thinking i know regarding the smoke from the dmu's lol  !

The Class 150's in original provincial light blue are electra railway graphics vinyls, i have 2 sets in this livery, 150125 & 150107, ive also painted the interior seats red with black effect frames to depict how they were at that time. I have 3 other 150/1's in the provincial dark blue, of which 2 i am yet to re-number.

Evening Guys Well i thought it time to post some more pics of the layout. I felt the Platform canopies looked too bulky before so ive constructed more lightweight looking structures made from clear plasticard & trimmed & painted rulers for strength, looks a lot more pleasing to the eye ;) . Still loads of detailing to be done on the station including signage & name boards, information screens etc....heres the pics of the progress so far....

This has come on a real treat since the last time i visited, especially like the yellow destination screens and also the cafe / waiting area near the main booking hall, the canopy is a work of art too cool.gif

Fantastic............Like the Euston - Shrewsbury rake you have, now need a pair of Dutch 31's on load 8 Regional Railway mk'2's on the summer Saturday Birmingham - Pwhelli wink.gif

Cheers Anthony  I have 2 Class 31's, i have Blue 31430 SISTER DORA and Railfrieght 31285.

Just for you, here's 31430 arriving on Platform 2. Unfortunatly for the Pwllheli passengers, their train is today the class 150/1 over on bay Platfrom 4 as its a weekday with a change at Machynlleth. The 31 is operating a Cardiff to Manchester service.....

Ps sorry for the slight blurriness in these pics

Hi Flying Pig,

Just to let you know that i have taken your advise about the pointwork on the station throat, having a 'play train' session today made me sort out the pointwork this evening...& here's the pics to show the new pointwork to Platforms 3 & 4, & ive not had to sacrifice any of Platform 2a either :D

Proves that advice off this forum can definatly work, Thankyou again

Well guys, as i have a week off work, its given me chance to have a play around on my layout, hance finding out i needed to change the pointwork at the station throat, this now allows departures from Platforms 3 & 4 straight onto the 'up' line.

Here's some pics of the trains running today at Oswestry Junction B)

2 class 150/1's can be seen in the station, the nearest unit is on the 1325 to Wolverhampton to Aberystwyth, the 150 seen over on Platform 4 will form the 1358 to Birmingham New Street, attaching to an arrival from Pwllheli.post-5923-126712529847_thumb.jpg

While the 'Aber' is waiting to depart, a class 108 has arrived with the local from Crewe.post-5923-126712545849_thumb.jpg

A HST has arrived in the station with the fictional 1348 Swansea to York intercity crosscountry service, while 150145 has arrived at Platform 4 with the Pwllheli to Birmingham, this has attached to 150107 which was 'on the blocks'.post-5923-126712552037_thumb.jpg

47535 arrives with a terminating Intercity service from London Euston, having taken over from electric traction at Wolverhamptonpost-5923-126712577176_thumb.jpg

Glad to find this layout on here and a cracking set of new pictures, I know what its like when modelling time is limited, you seem to be using every second to advantage, progressing very well.

Thankyou Matt  , it is limited time, & trying to resist running trains instead of getting stuff done on the layout  , still, adds to all the fun though ;)

I have this evening started the ballasting of my track, ive started from the bend under the station front, & most of the way down to Platforms 1 & 2a. I'll hopefully get some more done on this if not tomorrow, it'll be sunday :)

I like this layout more and more every time I see it. Well done on the ballasting(one of this hobby's least enjoyable aspectsunsure.gif ), it really has transformed the look. A couple of questions(for purely selfish reasons as I'm now getting round to finishing my platforms). Did you scratch build your information screens or does someone make them. Likewise, your flowerbeds and platform seats.

Looking top bananacool.gif

Cheers, matt
