smyles1
Please can anyone tell me when the last LNWR Crewe Special Saddle Tank locos were fitted with a cab roof? Did any survive with open cabs after the grouping? When did cab roofs start to replace open cabs? I am building a Crewe special and would like to build it with an open cab (and preferably original smokebox door) so I need to be able to match a time period in order to have correct rolling stock. I would really like to go for 1918-1923 but am flexible. Thanks, Mike
Davey
Mike, I've just thumbed through a copy of 'An Illustrated History of LNWR Engines' by Edward Talbot . There is a caption to a photograph on page 45 of a 'Special Tank' fitted with a roof, which states - 'The majority received cabs in the period 1912 - 1916 but some had them in the 1890's and others never received them at all. It might be worth while referring to the website of the LNWR Society to see if any more information is to hand. Dave
