Before updating on progress I thought I'd say a few words about the recently named and "branded" pub.

IMG_20190507_172952.jpg.5723f8cf8c213d5b66851edbbfa9440b.jpg

I read recently that a very important meeting about the inauguration of the Stockton and Darlington Railway was held in a pub called the "George and Dragon" in Darlington.  This fact coupled with the knowledge that my local pub has the same name determined it.  A search of Google images revealed some black and white images of this pub (allegedly) adorned with a nice Magnet Ales sign.  So I used the Scalescenes kit name-your-own-pub facility to print plain paper black and gold signage for the pub building and a pair of much reduced in size image of the Google image Magnet Ales sign printed on glossy photo paper and trimmed and glued back to back and hung from plastic strip gallows bracket to form the hanging sign.

Progress in recent days has focused on the scenics in this area.

IMG_20190515_151510.jpg.b71fb4f4a32984105d1c7c0029e75574.jpg

Firstly an expanded polystyrene "mound" was formed.

IMG_20190515_151754.jpg.8d3ec8a90d16b7190d6633f032c7cd8e.jpg

This was covered in plaster bandage, the adjoining area "Paved" with Scalescenes texture and static grassed.

IMG_20190516_150446.jpg.f775eed337fc180e14e8ff73359828c3.jpg

The excess hoovered up, this is how it turned out.

IMG_20190516_172543.jpg.f9f0657648f4eb43f85835d3aeb31c6a.jpg

I now need to push on with finishing the scenics in this area (within the wobbly red line) to substantially complete "Little Easington" (apologies for Late Afternoon Sun Stripe).

IMG_20190516_174242crop.jpg.34cb1af81803956e91e10a8f97ec8d78.jpg

More on that in a couple of weeks or so after me and Mrs D's jollies in warmer climes.

Regards,

Brian.

Great idea Calvin, worth investigating.

Why aye, man.  Me Uncle George (god rest his soul) had a pigeon cree on his allotment up Canada when I was a bairn.  If I can fit in an allotment or two then defo a cree as well.

I was leaning towards all three at one point but couldn't find 50s/60s contemporaneous colour images to model the signs with any degree of accuracy.  I had the same issue modelling a sign for "Shop at Binns" on my previous layout but took the plunge and was never really sure whether it was early enough.

OR Blue Star if you're really pushed  as in The Black Diamond.

John

The Black Diamond, of course, how could I forget (quite easy really at my advanced age - what were the names of the two cinemas? Was it the Rialto and the Hippodrome?)  So naturally I forgot all about Blue Star (presumably the Newcastle Brewery that made Newkie Brown?).

Thanks again chaps for your continuing interest in my ramblings and all the helpful comments.

Best Regards,

Brian.

PS Over the moon that The Lads are going to Wembley again for the play off final.  Just gutted that I won't be in the country on the day.

The Rialto is now a carpet/flooring store, and the Hippodrome has been replaced by 5/6 houses.

Thanks John - at least I got the names of the flics right, I remember watching Bridge on the River Kwai at one of them in the day. Yes I have seen the carpet place in recent visits to relatives. Thanks for reassuring me I'm not going doolally just yet.

  • 3 weeks later...

Back from holiday, case unpacked, grass cut so I spent some time in the shed this afternoon.  Before going away I ordered a Dapol LMS Upper Quadrant home signal to replace this signal...

IMG_20190604_140054.jpg.a09f89c9b0981566ce79a75932cb8793.jpg

...which protects the mainline from trains leaving the colliery.  So several yards of wiring later...

IMG_20190604_165937.jpg.ec0770c7b4e6ce9e4e32d08e51d55a96.jpg

...the new signal is in place and if I press this button...

IMG_20190604_170130.jpg.a4332994f2de1b0109222abdd9cbc6c5.jpg

...this happens.

IMG_20190604_165942.jpg.125abdf600718adc3cfd8d52b8a6f074.jpg

I'm quite pleased with the way the signal operates but it is a little noisy,  I also need to make it look a bit more ex LNER or BR by, say, adding a different finial.

Now, recently I noticed that one of the box shifters was offering the Hornby ex North British Railway J36 at a decent price but I wonder whether any of these ever penetrated this far south i.e, County Durham - I welcome any views on this.  It is a very attractive little loco and I'm sorely tempted.

Regards,

Brian.

Thought they might've.  Thanks John - I have taken delivery of one but as it's a Birthday present from Mrs D, it has only been test run and handed over for wrapping.  More pics after the great day.

For now, I am continuing with the signalling theme.  So, looking at the arrivals side of things I have decided to invest in and kit bash one of these.

IMG_20190612_150334.jpg.3a0f1516069df2cb0854541c9e07b1d9.jpg

The span is much too great for the planned location so I will shorten it from...

IMG_20190612_150341.jpg.56d86315a6fc02822af78070fdda4a87.jpg

...9 panels to 6 panels...

IMG_20190612_152909.jpg.285b01b1c3281e2668eb91539c3c5ef3.jpg

...by chopping these bits off from each side...

IMG_20190612_150719.jpg.44235dc17a055f305c5ae95a9053205e.jpg

...and adapting the mid span diaphragm piece from this...

IMG_20190612_150452.jpg.b5f9e4cef775a689b0485efbf02e20ab.jpg

...to this.

IMG_20190612_150510.jpg.5095a3ecabf88380c8fc295caf17a4f5.jpg

Apologies for the less than perfect pics.

The two side girders were duly shortened as described above and the supports added.

IMG_20190612_154731.jpg.ff7a0cd81a8739799a7756d5fcc761f9.jpg

It was then placed in position on the layout to check clearances on the up and down lines.

IMG_20190612_155206.jpg.56ab6081332c44b8d7ef2ac234fe4715.jpg

IMG_20190612_155328.jpg.d98c2de5734e3a49314b34ae29ad5abd.jpg

All is fine laterally but I think the gantry is a little dominant in height so I will shorten the side supports, probably removing the lowest cross braced panel which is too much to take off but also introducing some "concrete" plinths to compensate.

The plan is to populate the gantry with Train-tech working colour light signals so an order has just been placed.  The challenge will be making the wiring for the lights invisible either by hiding them in a duct of some sort or simply painting them matt black.

More pics in due course.

Regards,

Brian.

I took a few pics with "the big camera" (DSLR) today so I can set the lens aperture down to f22.  Here is one I've posted to see if there is any discernible difference between it and the phone pics I normally post.

My eyesight, even with Specsaver's finest assistance, struggle but I suppose the depth of field is improved.  I'd be interested to hear your views.

Brian.

The latest news about the signal gantry is that I have reduced it in height by one half of the lower bracing panel and replaced the overly thick "foundations" with plasticard.  It has also had a coat of grey paint for the steelwork and stone colour for the "foundation".

IMG_20190617_175637.jpg.4fd85b184d27cd6c2413540134fd476b.jpg

IMG_20190617_175742.jpg.48326fd598d07d8caf0117befc514480.jpg

IMG_20190617_175652.jpg.fe98c8f0ae262450921475de57e3d5ac.jpg

The "foundations" obviously need to be let into the land form.  The various colour signal head parts are now to hand so much soldering of fine wire is necessary before positioning the signal heads on the gantry.  I've also  yet to devise a suitable and subtle ducting arrangement for these wires and provide proper gantry access for the 4mm scale maintenance crew.  So, not a quick mini project this.

Brian.

The great day has arrived, I can't believe I'm a certain age ending with a nought somewhere between 60 and 80 - gobsmacked!  Anyway, enough of tempus fugit (apologies to all Latin scholars if I have misspelled), one of my Birthday gifts as I mentioned in an earlier post was the Hornby J36 "Haig".  I had the time later today to add it to my goods train and create a video for you enjoyment  (or otherwise).  You can find it here.

Regards,

Brian.

I would have thought an 0-6-0 would have been more appropriate for your 60th?  :D

Belated happy returns for your birthday - and wishing you many more ahead.

Not too late to order another Q6 I suppose :D

Thanks for your kind wishes Scott.  Summer has arrived here at last in the UK - 30 degrees C plus today.  Hope the Australian winter is behaving.

Save your pennies for the Oxford Rail J27 that is due toward the end of the year!  Strangely, because of the RRP prices creeping higher over the last few years, £94 sounds reasonable.

Our winter is pretty much sticking to the script - but lots of rain squals coming in off the Indian Ocean for me.  No end in sight, either:

You should definitely wait for a J27 or two as these would suit your layout much more than a J36.

Happy 0-6-0 Brian. It's mine in a couple of months and I'm looking to start my new layout once the garage is fitted out, in the meantime I'm drawing inspiration from your efforts,

Do you have a proposed track plan, Tom?  Would love to see it.

Happy birthday Brian,

Layout is looking great, I like the bash of the gantry will be interested to see how it turns out. The Dapol kits still stand the test of time if with a bit of gentle persuasion! I've just finished a Dapol cattle wagon kit this week. I'm pretty pleased with it. Might have been easier if the parts matched the number on the sprue with the ones on the instructions!

All the best,

John
