ISW
14 hours ago, Brian D said: Hi Ian, Thanks for your further comments. In answer to your query about weathering, no I haven't weathered any of the structures on Deneside yet but I have a packet of art pastels stashed away for that purpose but you could argue that the Scalescenes "Aged Brick" textures don't need it. Neither have I sealed the structures with varnish - the layout is in a shed with two north facing windows fitted with roller blinds so when I'm not in there it is quite dark even during the day so I don't really feel the need to protect the printed textures from sun bleaching/fading. All of the structures are now only faced with plain printer paper whereon the textures have been printed. If you read back far enough in this thread you will see that I had a very unfortunate experience with some cheap photo paper which I used on the retaining walls at the rear of Deneside station, a station building and the platform side stone texture. All had to be replaced or recovered because, over time, they turned from stone ashlar colour to pink, I think the stuff was still developing! One thing I would say is print everything you need for a project or kit straight away. If you look closely, the different terraced house structures in "Little Easington", despite being faced with the same Scalescenes texture are slightly different in hue to the point I can notice it, others might not. This is all because the textures for each structure were printed using different printers or cartridge brands. But you probably knew all this already, I'll shut up now. Thanks again for your interest. Regards, Brian. Brian, I did read about your issues with 'pink' station buildings. Not a pleasant experience for yourself. I have a few card buildings I faced with self-printed inkjet brickwork / roofwork that are ~5-years old now. I did spray some with waterproofing spray (the one for coats & umbrellas!) and, to date, I've not see any fading or colour changing. Fingers crossed on that department. I asked about the weathering as I generally add some mottled black (faded to transparent) in the print file along the lower edge of my buildings to help 'blend them in' to the ground. This can be quite effective, but I think that some post print / assembly weathering would be a good idea. As to the print 'shade' altering between print runs / cartridges I do take your point, especially within the same building / structure. However, surely a bit of variation between buildings is acceptable, and even prototypical? The brick manufactures do not have a 'colour code' to match, so why should us modellers.
Brian D
The work shop building is now complete. Here are some of the bits to be added on to the main structure. A section of Painted Brickwork texture on 2 mm grey board has already been added to the main structure. Here it is complete... ...and on the layout. It still needs to be bedded in and obviously the scenic ground cover completed round it. I'll probably be fencing tomorrow and get back to the colliery buildings after that. Regards, Brian.
Brian D
Another fence completed... ...so it's back to the colliery buildings and in particular this mock up... ...which I thought was a little under-whelming so I decided to make another mock up... ...to see how it looked and to use as a model to decide where windows and doors might go. Having decided which Scalescenes windows to use, it was then into TurboCAD to make the card profiles for the external walls. More updates as work progresses on this structure which will be the colliery office building. Regards, Brian.
Brian D
I thought I would try and find a former to use to help cut the arched windows and fortuitously this egg cup filled the bill. The main long wall of the colliery office building is now complete, just waiting for the glue to dry. The shorter end walls are less complex so should be quicker to build. Brian D
Dodgy phone pics alert! Another building has rolled off the production line today (bar chimneys yet to be added). Firstly the main wall sections were completed... ...glued together and a ceiling/gutter piece added.... ...before adding the roof... ...and adding it to the layout. There will be a break now for a couple of weeks or so before I tackle the main colliery pit head buildings and pit head gear (for which I have a kit somewhere). ISW
Brian, I think a few 'limited clearance' signs on the sides of them there buildings might be appropriate. There isn't much space to the passing trains ...
RMweb Gold 5BarVT Posted September 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 10, 2019 But this model isn’t much after the days when you didn’t get trapped between building and train a second time . . . Paul. 2

Had away, man - there's plenty of roooom! The NCB inherited a cramped site ye knaa what ah mean leik Seriously, the rear roof of the colliery office was a little over size so I shaved a scale 9 inches off which has improved clearances slightly on that side. Appropriate notices on the lines of "Beware of the Trains" may be required but you have to bear in mind the period modelled (50s early 60s), well before Elf 'n Safety was invented. Thanks again for your comments and interest guys. Regards, Brian.

However, I still think a few 'choice' signs would help the realism.

jukebox
I didn't know the answer, so was going to ask the question here, (but remembered how much it hacks me off when I see that!), so Googled it myself: The "Limited Clearance" warning sign was introduced by British Railways in 1952. It comprises a red and white chequered board with the words "Warning - Limited clearance" (the earliest examples had the words written in capital letters). These signs are exhibited at each end of a structure close to the track. I did think as much, because my reference photos of Stockton shed show them at the doorways. I'm sure there's a decal maker who sells them as a sheet. Cheers Scott
Brian D
We returned from holiday on Sunday so I ordered this little beauty as soon as we got back. The Postie delivered it today so the Fat Controller put in platform 4 and sent it to the colliery. According to the blurb, this loco was stationed at Ryhope Colliery so could not resist. Speaking of collieries, the next mini project will be the construction of the screens structure, the mock up of which is seen in the last picture. Before going away I ordered plenty of card and styrene H and C sections so time to crack on. Earlier today I prepared a TurboCAD drawing of the side gable walls as below. All will be revealed in due course construction wise. Regards, Brian.
Andrew P
Hi Brian, I do like that little Blue Beauty, there is something about Blue Locos that I like, I've had a Duchess and a Bulleid in Blue, and they were very handsome. I hope it wont see to much weathering as the paintwork lining and lettering is superb mate.

Thanks for your kind comments though Andy. Best regards Brian
RMweb Gold BoD Posted October 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2019 If it got as far down as Deneside it must have turned left at Ryhope instead of right. Beautiful little loco.
Brian D
Work on the screens structure continues. The other day I made one of these... ...which comprises one of the side gable walls. The TurboCAD outline was glued to 2 mm thick grey board, the outline and window apertures cut out and then the whole was covered with Scalescenes' "Aged Brown Brick" texture. Sill brickwork has been added and the windows are from the Scalescenes Large Loco Shed kit but reduced in size by 60% and printed on an Over Head Projector transparency sheet. The "steel" structural elements... ...were then painted olive green and the various sections glued to the main card element to form one side of the screens. I need to add diagonal bracing to the "columns" below the "brickwork" and, obviously, finish the other three sides, floors and roof. Getting there! Regards, Brian. 5
Brian D
More progress on the screens - the main walls and a floor have been made... ...and glued together. There is still a lot of stuff to add including the central row of "ground floor" columns, diagonal bracing as I mentioned earlier and more plastic strip (of which I have run out) at the ends before tackling the roof. I'm not sure whether I've mentioned this but the model is based on the plans in "Modelling Aspects of the Coal Industry" by Rob Johnson. jukebox
Very nice work so far, Brian. I take it you'll be applying some generous weathering at some point? Cheers, Scott

Actually, I am a very impatient person and sometimes wonder whether I'm really cut out for this hobby . The layout has been several years in the making, probably year 5 at the minute. But I do enjoy completing something and the layout has been a series of bite size chunks or mini projects as I suppose most are. 18 hours ago, Two_sugars said: Must be on piecework . . . . Brian D
More progress today - the centre line of columns and associated frame work has been glued together, painted and glued to the structure as below. The incomplete model is shown here posed temporarily in position on the layout. Hopefully I'll make further progress tomorrow.
