Deneside - BR North Eastern Region

The latest video has just been uploaded, the first in a series of "Loco Focus" films which will feature single locomotives, whether they be steam or diesel.  Because the layout is currently totally populated with diesels, I have chosen the Class 17 "Clayton" diesel loco to start the series.  The prototypes were cr"p and were all withdrawn from BR by 1972.  Some saw service (briefly) in the North East and I have a little bit of a soft spot for my Heljan model which is a superb runner.  Enjoy or otherwise here....

Regards,

Brian.

I can remember seeing one of these pulling a coal train when I was younger. A lot quieter than a J27 or a Q6.. but a lot slower..

Trip freights for me - through Jesmond or at Central Station.  Thanks for the memories.

You know, I can't actually remember seeing any of these back in the day.  I certainly didn't see any on the Durham coast line but I have a couple underlined in my Ian Allen so I must have seen them probably on the very few occasions I visited Newcastle Central.

I have a couple of colour prints of D8590 on a van train waiting for signals east bound. I have the Heljan model DCC fitted(very tight squeeze) and it does run very well.

Another video is currently being rendered to my hard drive prior to upload.  Meanwhile....

...Deneside is packed out with 5 different trains.  Because I like to see lots of trains go by, I've managed to squeeze 11 different trains onto the layout which is probably the maximum capacity - 3 DMUs, 2 express passenger trains, 2 parcels trains, 2 coal trains, 1 iron ore train and the Clayton on goods.  Makes for interesting operation but probably not very prototypical.

Expect another video soon featuring the humble Bachmann class 24.

Brian.

We are away this week in the Land of the Prince Bishops so a quick visit to Locomotion at Shildon had to be part of the itinerary and what a pleasant surprise to see this handsome beast parked outside.

Taking advantage of an offer in "Model Rail" magazine I purchased some Geoscenics speed limit signs which were duly positioned on the layout as below.

The upshot of this is that the masonry (main line) viaduct is now speed restricted to 25 mph and the metal (colliery branch) viaduct limited to 10 mph.  These speed restrictions are at the bequest of the Area Chief Civil Engineer to preserve the infrastructure from further damage and all local and visiting enginemen have been informed.

Brian.

The latest stock acquisitions, a trio of Accurascale 21T mineral wagons, have been given a run on the layout, seen here ascending the main line bank over the viaduct by Little Easington.

To say they need weathering is an understatement.  As with the Accurascale 21T hopper wagons, the grey body plastic is very much towards the white end of the colour spectrum compared, say to the grey that Bachmann use - see below.

I might be being a bit picky here but to my eyes the door moulding on the Bachmann wagon looks better than that on the Accurascale but perhaps its the colour of the plastic that is influencing my judgement here.

The latest mini project involves lineside telegraph poles on the main line.  I wasn't sure whether such poles were fitted to the sides of viaducts so did some research on-line.  Having googled the topic I came across (can you believe this?) "The Telegraph Pole Appreciation Society" - well knock me down with a feather .  Anyway, there seems to be examples of poles hanging off viaducts so off I go.

The raw materials are.....

IMG_20211022_152056.jpg.b4a25c03046f0fe877b891c08e5a9559.jpg

The article is from the August 2018 issue of BRM.  The Dapol poles are a bit of a faff because some of the cross pieces are missing from the main pole moulding and have to be added or the necessary holes filled.  I chose to add the cross pieces as shown below.

IMG_20211022_155533.jpg.fb27ddb2a46321c0563f522eefb3fa7a.jpg

The pole on the right is without the cross pieces, that on the left shows the chosen variants fitted.  The poles were there then inserted into a spare piece of timber drilled to suit and spray painted outside, see below.

They will now be left to dry overnight.  More progress to follow.

Brian.

After spraying the poles, the insulators have been picked out in white and the foot rungs painted grey, both colours matt acrylic - see below.

They have now been planted on the layout as shown below...

Not much to report except...

...after a DMU arrival...

...the L1 was due to depart with a local stopper.

Meanwhile, over at the colliery, a J27 and a train of coal hoppers was waiting for the right away...

...while the colliery shunter took a break.

I've been experimenting with the panorama feature of Photoshop Elements.  See what you think.

Firstly a low viewpoint which has been cropped.

Untitled_Panorama1.jpg.fdae350b893fc04e9034b161f0640a04.jpg

This is the area of the layout I call Three Bridges for obvious (I hope) reasons.

Secondly, a higher view point of the same area which is uncropped, the reason being I can only crop in a rectangular frame, I think, unless you know otherwise.

Untitled_Panorama2.jpg.21f23cfdae37278b6720045cc9ad0cfd.jpg

This image is slightly wider in that it encompasses additional bits of the layout at each end.  The dreaded Peco turntable drive controller features bottom far right.  I will replace this drive in due course.  Anyone out there thinking of investing in one please avoid.

Regards,

Brian.
