RMweb Premium Ray H Posted January 30, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 30, 2016 That looks very nice Brian. I've bought several Scalescene kits recently. I shall need to find some time to build them.

Brian D
Progress has taken a knock by the dreaded lurgy! Me and my wife were both ill last week. Things inproved somewhat at the weekend but last night and today, I still feel not quite 100%. Anyway, enough of my moans. I did manage to finish the church wall - see below. The brown (bare baseboard) and white (ground form polystyrene) areas in front of the church will be grassed to represent the church grave yard. I am also keen to model a lych gate at the near end of this area. Off to Google images now to see what's involved. Regards, Brian.
Brian D
The last few days have seen progress on the church grave yard. I found some stuff called "Funky Foam" in The Range so I bought a couple of sheets (50p per A3 sheet). These were cut and glued in position. A path was painted on and scatter material sprinkled over PVA glue. Static grass was then added and the church and the wall put back in position. The temporary photo back scene was removed while all this was going on and I really want to work on this next to firm it up. Regards, Brian
Brian D
I've just finished a small project, namely the lych gate. First I prepared a highly detailed drawing thus. The main framework was made from styrene sections and sprayed matt brown. Then a Scalescenes roof was added. Gates were added, one shut, one open and, along with short sections of boundary wall, was fixed in position on the layout. I'm happy with the overall look of it. Regards, Brian.
Andrew P
Looks really good to me Brian, I wanted one for my St Andrews Church above the Village so now I must get on with it, your putting me to shame mate.
Brian D
Looks really good to me Brian, I wanted one for my St Andrews Church above the Village so now I must get on with it, your putting me to shame mate. There is no way I could put you to shame, Andy - more likely the reverse. I see you've started another layout which I will follow with interest - just off there now to ask a question. Jock67B
Brian, Just been catching up, and I'm most impressed, that church is something but I find your first attempt at static grass very effective, even tempting me to consider having a go! Mind you, there isn't a lot of grass on a steam shed layout. Sorry about all the ratings as I play catch up, Kind regards, Jock.
Brian D
Brian, Just been catching up, and I'm most impressed, that church is something but I find your first attempt at static grass very effective, even tempting me to consider having a go! Mind you, there isn't a lot of grass on a steam shed layout. Sorry about all the ratings as I play catch up, Kind regards, Jock. No problem, Jock - good to have you "on-board" I was initialy fearful of using the static grass gizmo (went for a cheaper "tea strainer" type, not the super expensive jobs) and am really pleased with the results. Brian D
This week I have been concentrating on "Church Row" - the cottages close to the church behind platform 1. The full depth row of 4 cottages have been completed and a further four (almost complete) added in low (just over half) relief. The messy temporary photo back scenes in this area have been removed and some mounting board installed ready to receive the final photos, these being 297 mm high (A4 "height"). These are the results. I am contemplating building another row of 4 low (less than half) relief cottages to the left of these two which will complete the buildings in this area and I can then finalise the ground treatment (paving) behind the retaining wall and give serious thought to the photo backscene. Regards, Brian.
AireValley1962
Those cottages along the backscene look terrific. Another four wouldn't be amiss, I'm sure. Cheers, William
Brian D
Those cottages along the backscene look terrific. Another four wouldn't be amiss, I'm sure. Cheers, William Thanks for the encouragement, William. I actually have added 5 more cottages - see below. Apologies but I have just noticed the the nearest group of cottages are not level and are leaning towards the back of the layout. This will of course be rectified when I finalise the paving/ground treatment in this area. I am now beginning to think that the "house backs" in the far distance, either side of the overbridge look out of place. I am seriously considering building yet more ashlar clad half relief cottages to replace the house backs (which I could fit in somewhere else on the layout) incorporating a corner shop or pub adjacent to the road leading to the bridge. Regards, Brian.
Andrew P
The extra Houses do look much better Brian, superb mate, well done.
Removed a/c
I thought the terraced backs looked a little odd when you posted, I agree more of the same front cottages and a few shops would be much better. Brian D
The extra Houses do look much better Brian, superb mate, well done. Thanks Andy. I'm trying to complete this area as my first priority. I am conscious of leaving quite a few areas unfinished. I thought the terraced backs looked a little odd when you posted, I agree more of the same front cottages and a few shops would be much better. Now you mention it mate, I totally agree. Brian D
So, in order to remove the house backs by the bridge, more cottages and a corner shop are being worked on at the moment. Here they awaiting the roofer and a few other trades... ...and posed on the layout. Regards, Brian.

Brian D
Looks great so far Brian Excellent! I really think it looks good! Thanks chaps. I'm quite pleased with the look. Once this little corner is sorted out I need to lay some more track under the bridge so I can finalise the bridge abutments and bridge deck. Regards, Brian.
Brian D
The final block of cottages including the corner shop/post office is now complete, thus. "Brown's Stores" is an establishment here in our village where we have lived for 40 years, although the shop is now trading under a different name. Regards, Brian.
Brian D
Progress in the last few days has involved putting card steps and paving under the cottages, difficult to photograph so no pics I'm afraid. However some details have also been added including a few Hornby "Skaledale" bits I ordered a week or so ago. Firstly, a phone box and post box have been added outside Brown's Stores... ...and some gravestones added to the graveyard. I have also added some railings behind the buffer stops. The last picture has prompted me to put a bit more effort into finishing the station building - perhaps tomorrow, grand child minding duties permitting. leftwinguk
Really starting to come to life now Brian. I think your row of cottages and the stores on the end looks very believable. Enjoyed your whole thread so far... Best Regards
