Definitely no footbridge you have a concourse for movement between platforms.like the layout track looks excellent.

Totally agree.  Unfortunately, as a retired Structural Engineer I get a bit obsessed with bridges of all types, thus there are two viaducts, an underline road bridge, an overline road bridge and a public overline footbridge on the layout   :)

The bridge emphasised how narrow the platforms are. Definitely a good idea to lose it.

The light blue looks quite odd to my eyes, but I assume it's the right kind of colour. It's all coming together nicely.

All agreed about the footbridge.  Researching the right colour and shade has proved tricky.  I have found the odd colour image to support my choice of light blue and a handful of other NE (BR) layouts show the same as does the heritage North York Moors line.  The exact shade is always going to be guesswork without a tardis.

Regards,

Brian.

Thanks to all who contributed to the footbridge debate.  The offending structure has now been removed thus.

Meanwhile, the Clayton having failed again, the regular coastal oil train is in the hands of the 9F seen here arriving.

Ooh, er - this all looks very different.  This post is by way of an experiment to see whether I have got to grips with the new format.

The cottage pink roofs (dodgy still developing photo paper) have been replaced thus.

That roof really sets them off, it's a nice improvement that'll help them to blend in.

Hope I've done the reply correctly!

I've had a loco failure!  I was going to put my 2004 vintage Bachmann WD on the iron ore hoppers but it has started to run erratically when previously it was as smooth as silk - I suspect an electrical fault.  I contacted Bachmann service who advised that the motor was no longer available for a WD of this age so sending it there for repair (£30) is a bit of a gamble.  Also, new black BR versions are not currently available.  I will ponder on this before deciding what to do - I really must have a WD to match the place and period of the layout.

So, what to do in the interim?

I have a Bachmann O4 which was a bit of an impulse buy in 2014 (seventy odd quid for a weathered version) so she has been pressed into service but is not really place correct, I don't recall nor can I find evidence that these ex GCR locos penetrated the North East much if at all.  But she is a lovely smooth runner seen here arriving on the coastal ore train, initially held at signals to allow the Q6 and hoppers to enter the colliery branch.

Don't tempt me, although I have pre-ordered an Oxford Rail J27 :victory:

Does the WD have dirty wheels or muck on the pick ups? I would try that first then check that the dcc blanking plate (if fitted) is still plugged in.

Thanks Baz, I'll give it the once over tomorrow.  The WD is the mk1 Bachmann model with only pickups on the loco and no mention of being DCC ready.

Brian.

Well, strange things these gremlins.  I gave the wheel treads and backs a good going over with my Peco wheel cleaner wire brush/scraper thingy and put the loco on the track and still had intermittent running issues.  So, I decided to take it apart and have a look.  The exploded view provided with the loco gave no clue how to get the body off so I removed all the screws I could see underneath but, feeling some resistance, gave up and replaced them all.  On returning the loco to the track perfect running has now resumed - don't ask me how.  Hopefully this will continue and I've saved at least £30.  I'll keep you updated.

Brian.

A couple of parcels arrived yesterday.

The Knightwing kit was quickly assembled and painted and it and the Diesel Service Point placed on the layout thus.

The tank just fits behind the signal box in this combined steam/diesel depot scenario...

...but if I choose to remove all the kettles and just run diesels then the coaling tower will be removed and the tank repositioned.

Brian.

I'm sure you're mistaken, Brian;  Stockrington is just down the coast from Deneside, and it saw at least one O4!    ;)

Lovely work on the servicing point.

Cheers

I was looking for some Diesel info of yours, well I think it is you but got side tracked with your shed build.

In particular your wall insulating and covering.

I'm about to follow a very similar process using 50mm Jabalite but I notice you have also installed some foil wrapped bubble wrap.  I was understanding that if you leave an air gap then just add the Jabalite then ply/mdf over the top would be good enough.  When I googled when looking how to do I saw sheds finished with one or the other but not both.  What do you gain from adding the Foiled bubble wrap?

Is it a case of you can't have too much insulation?

Nice looking shed how has it fared over the years past, keeping you warm in winter and cool in the summer.  My shed is 20ft x 12ft it is tar paper lined on the inside which I hope excuses me the foil bubble wrap, what do you think.

Hi Barnaby,

Thanks for taking an interest in my ramblings. The bubble wrap stuff was used primarily as an outer vapour barrier and additional insulation, oh and because it was cheap :).  The overlaps are such that any moisture drains outward and not inward. The walls and roof are treated the same way i.e. air gap, bubble wrap, expanded polystyrene insulation then MDF lining. It is very effective in that in the winter it doesn't take long to heat up the shed with a small fan heater but the shed still gets very hot in the summer, although last summer was exceptional.

Hope that helps and thanks again for your interest.

Regards,

Brian.

Amazingly, proper 21st Century fibre Broadband has arrived in our village so I have signed up to BT Infinity at no extra cost over the previous contract.  Upload speeds have risen from 0.4 wotsits to 8 or more so I thought I'd give YouTube a go.  As a trial, this is the first "cab ride" video I took several months ago - quite a lot in the station has changed since and the "camera" is a £9 Ebay job from China (als the date is wrong).

Enjoy (or otherwise as the case may be).

regards,

Brian.

There was an O4 that failed near Billingham and had to be taken off the train, later being found on shed at Thornaby.  I can't remember which mag it was in but there was a picture of it at Norton triangle.

After all if a Crosti 9F could make it onto Darlington shed for turning, and a J6 be pictured coming off the Tyne bridge on a fitted goods bound for Heaton then rule 1 doesn't need stretching all that far..

I've just checked my Ebay purchase history but the item is no longer listed.  However, this item looks to be identical (usual disclaimer).

Here is another "experimental" video.  I say experimental because I am still learning how to edit video and save the files thus formed in a format that YouTube will accept (which has proved troublesome to say the least!)  Anyway, this one shows a diesel hauled short parcels service departing.  Apologies for the picture quality - the clips were filmed on my phone.

Brian.

I have built another Train Tech signal today.  This is (signal pros look away now) sort of advanced starter for platforms 1 and 2, the feather directs trains on to the proper up or departing line.  I was going to put the signal here...

20190209_165941.jpg.c05d4c5d05100254ac07170c25e4b4cb.jpg

...to suit left hand drive locos departing from platforms 1 and 2 (the point far right leads to the two platforms) but the clearances are too tight so...

20190209_170005.jpg.c13ed5e858d23e1b220075c036cebd41.jpg

...it will have to go here where clearances are adequate.  The signal has yet to be wired up back to the panel...

20190209_170521.jpg.58955a0e1a776b4db10f313441078133.jpg

...where the two missing switches will control the signal.

Regards,

Brian.
