Just checked my Kernow account online and it confirms that my van was dispatched 2 days ago. Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh.

And excitingly, returning from being away with work (how strange) this morning, the parcel was waiting for me. Yay!

Now then, where did the conversation get to regarding the "not in common use" and the "Bodmin - Wadebridge" working text? Are any third parties producing these?

I'd like to know that too!

Anyone got a photo of the prototype?

(Being in Bodmin, it goes without saying that I have the model).

There's a photo of S54663 at Wadebridge at the end of its days on p170 of The Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway 1834-1983 by Michael Messenger , Twelveheads Press.  If it helps I can scan and send as a PM.

There are two decent published photos I know of. The reference above is one:

At Wadebridge Quay dated Aug 1961

The second is in this more recent book on page 44 and was taken at Wenford in May 1958.

I can't clearly make out the text in the original photos but I think the wording was discussed in this thread about a year ago. Work between Bodmin Wadebridge & Padstow only?

I like how the Not in Common Use is not central on the black.

Extracts included to illustrate discussion point only.

If it's van No. S54663, the plate should read "To work only between Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow".

Source: Southern Wagons, Vol.1. Page 65.

John

Found the post I was after regarding the text. The book states it was added c June 1939.

My reading of the BR lettering is : -

   Work between

 Bodmin Wadebridge

& Padstow only

John Isherwood.

And John's reading which matches what I think I can see.

I'd entirely forgotten about posting that!

I wonder - could it actually be

Work between

BODMIN, WADEBRIDGE

& PADSTOW only ?

The tare weight I read as 10-16, or possibly 10-18?

I would print these as separate black patches and lettering groups, so that off-centre application - as per the photo - would be possible.

I can't see a comma John but is there a small dash or dot between Bodmin and Wadebridge?

Hmm, not sure; I can't see the logic for that.

Whatever - a fine brush and some white / black paint will facilitate personal editing!

Arrival Notice...please disregard

After almost 7 years since my original order.....the road van has arrived on the far distant shore of this former Spanish colony.  Shown with my other recent Southern RTR wagon acquisitions.

Were my old Padstow layout still around it would of course be allocated to Padstow-Wadebridge-Wenford services.  Would it have had such non-common user markings in the latter years of the Southern? Actually I should find out what the numbers were for road vans used out of Wadebridge 1945-47.

Nice delicious chocolate color paint job.

The handrails were officially  black in LSWR days, in reality once the paint started to age they appeared lighter in B&W photographs but white handrails were introduced by the SR.

Another "Got mine!" post I'm afraid. What a beautiful model! Thank you to Kernow and all who worked on it, it's lovely to start having "proper" pre-grouping southern rolling stock appearing, along with the Rails and Rapido SECR wagons, the Hornby LSWR brake (once they sorted the colour - Kernow have done a much nicer job here!).

Now, who fancies a matching LBSC brake van? :P Or even an Adams birdcage brake?

John Isherwood,

Cambridge Custom Transfers.

If I am to produce a transfer sheet dedicated to the BR-era lettering on these vans, I would like to fill an A6 sheet with a good choice of subjects.

I can obtain number series information from the appropriate wagon history tome but, if there were any recorded number / service allocations apart from the Bodmin / Wadebridge / Padstow one, I could include these on the sheet.

I would need a decent photo in order to reproduce the spacing / layout of the prototype, so any contributions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

John Isherwood,

Cambridge Custom Transfers.
