Diesel Hydraulic Era O Gauge Garden Railway (Steve Beattie Class 22)

Recommended Posts

Makes me wish I modelled 0 Gauge, but I'm not changing now...

I'm trying to work out how the sector plate/ fiddle yard works. Is it pivoted at one end or at the centre? It would seem to be the answer to what I'm looking for, in my case for a 00 gauge set up.

The sector plate pivots like so.....

Hi Phill,

It's great to see so many enjoying your Thread and Posts over here on RMW - rightly deserved.

To my mind you seem to be inspiring many with your superb garden railway, which, perhaps more importantly from my POV, is 'diesel era', let's hope that we see a plethora of new garden railways in 7mm off of the back of this interest!

Kindest regards,

This week I have been developing the coal mans yard in the old goods yard at Withercombe.  First of all I scratchbuilt  some coal staithes  using wooden stirrers, in the first pic we see the main components.

These were then assembled once the glue had dried.

The staithes were then tried in various locations around the yard until I was happy.

I then painted/weathered them using acrylics & real coal dust, when this was done I glued them down & loaded them with real crushed coal, I also  added another pile of coal to represent a new delivery,

My thoughts then turned to some sort of decrepit digger that would be found in all coal yards. I didnt have a suitable digger, but I did have a Ferguson tractor from issue one of one of those partwork magazines.....well for the princely sum of 99p it would have been rude not to  :O

So after a little research this morning I came up with a suitable bucket etc for my 1947 Ferguson http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081111024327/tractors/images/b/b7/Ferguson_tractor_fitted_with_banna_loader-Newark_VS-IMG_3479_1.JPG , so I made my own using scrap brass etch & some old 00 gauge rail.

Once it was weathered hopefully it should look the part parked up in the yard.

Phil,

Finally popped by, nice to see more progress being made, My Danish grandfather had one of those tractors on his nursery or plant school as they call it over there LOL, big red thing it was, should of picked one up for myself on reflection, anyway, looks good with the bucket up front.

Best

Mick

Well I have made up the lorry & positioned it in the coal yard, although I'm happy with the look of the yard, I think the back wheels are possibly set too far back now?..........

Cheers Phill :)

Hi Phill,

My thoughts too.

From my dad's lorry driving days I remember flatbeds like that having the axles further inboard.

Hope that helps.

Have a look at the photos of AEC Mercuries on this site:-

I couldn't find a square-on view, but these should give you an idea; I think the flat-bed bit should scale out at about 20'.

The lorry chassis with the Araldite drying, showing my very crude but hopefully effective conversion of the articulated tractor unit into a rigid flat back   :scratchhead: .....

The re-positioned axle looks better I hope :)  .......

Also over the last few days I have been experimenting with station lighting. This was done using Wilko's battery powered warm glow L.E.D. fairy lights, i got a few sets of these in the January sales at about £1.50 a set  :imsohappy:

I am very happy with the lighting effect & will give the rest of the platform canopy the same treatment & the signal box too :)

That's all for now

Phill  :imsohappy:
