OK i have been out in the garden today and made some more progress on my garden railway.

I know these next pics are a little boring as no trains are actually running but i am getting closer to that day.

I have now fixed the boards beyond the other side of the path "step over" bridge and they now reach the side of the green house.

Now the plan has changed a little . I was going to have a passing loop for each of the double track circuits. This has now been reduced to one loop for the "inner" circuit due to space issues. Oh well never mind i will see if i can fit a passing loop to the " outer" circuit round the pond area where i have a bit of space.

I have painted the edges of the boards and hopefully tomorrow i will cut and start to lay the roofing felt onto these boards.

I have had a re-think over passing loops and although its not a final decision i am swaying towards having a centre loop in between both mainlines which can be used for either direction plus when empty can be used as a cross over.

I am trying to keep most, if not all, points close and in one area so maintenance becomes easier/more accessable.

The reason for the slow progress on the railway is because i have had to fit 8 concrete plinths to the fence, which is why the panels look odd. The new panel is the correct height and all the others will be replaced asap.

I dont think so Phill. Once all the track is down i will think more about it then, but to be honest it seems a lot more cost/work in an area that can be just changed by hand.

They won't need much maintenance if there is no track power or point motors :)

Hi Rob, I like the idea of the 3 track with the centre line as a both directions passing loop. Is there anywhere on the network which uses/used this idea for a suitable track layout plan/diagram? How about some long pushbike style cables which could be greased/oiled connected to some rc sourced servo linkages to operate the remotest points then the close ones you could operate by hand or lever frame? Great work what I can see and as Phill says most definitely not boring..

Well i am now over half way round the garden with the board laying . I still have to fix roofing felt to some boards which i will hopefully get some more done tomorrow weather permitting.

Unfortunately its raining so no pics of the progress but i will again take some tomorrow if weather is ok.

Tomorrow should see me getting closer to meeting up with the "other end" to complete a cicuit. Although there will be a missing gap where the viaduct goes but work will commence on that again when i cant do anymore on the railway.

The sun finally come out long enough for me to take some pics of progress.

I was just about to start when there was such a comotion from the sparrows then a sparrow hawk swooped and landed on the fence. I quickly crawled along the conservatory floor with my camera as close to the door and as quick as i could zoomed in and took a pic. I know its not that clear but no sooner had i took the pic it flew off.

These next few pics show the top curve with felt on, just leaving one piece to put down .

These pics show the areas of the railway that i am working on at the moment.

Hopefully later (if it stays dry) i will get some more boards down along the side of the fence.

The bottom curve as you can see from the pics that i have added 3 extra posts and im in the process of drilling posts, fixing brackets and cutting and fixing the 4x2 timber between each post. Once all this has been done then the boards can go down. ( although the hardware store where i get the brackets from is out of stock for a couple of weeks ), so wont be able to do any work on that part.

You can see from the last pic above that i have laid a couple of small boards after the bridge. I will also try and get some felt on them.

The last two pics show the latest felt has been laid and weighted down.

Progress up-date. 12/6/15

Today i have been outside and i have made some more progress on the railway. Here are some pics to show what i have done.

I have drilled the posts and bolted the brackets, cut the 4x2 timber to slot in between each post. Then the board has been cut at the angles required to create the curve. This has been done from the board just after the underpass as far as where the viaduct will take the track accross to the edge of the pond. Unfortunately i have run out of board with 1 piece to compltet this section. However i will need to order another sheet so that it can be cut into 5 strips allowing me to join up with the boards that run behind the greenhouse.

I am really close now to a complete circuit . Next job will be to lay the roofing felt on the uncovered boards.

The next pic shows the concrete pillars that have been cast to be used on the viaduct. There are 8 complete and 2 that broke. I need 13 all together and once i have them i will allign them and set in concrete so they are all at the same height/level. Once this has been done i will then sort the arches. This will be achieved by making sides of the viaduct with the bottom of the arches in a framework/mould so that concrete can be filled into it to form the top part in situ.

And finally a pic of my little helper. lol

Thats all for now.

Hi Rob,

The first picture, third post from the right, looks a bit of a tight curve, or is it just the angle of the photo ?.

Coming on strong now mate.

Always good to see a garden railway mate.

Have you thought about lineside fencing of some form to stop trains from falling down a sheer drop if they get knocked over?

This is just the first stages of build. The soil will be topped up then planting up to just below track level.

I have made a little more progress but no pics of anything worth posting.

Progress report.

I have been in the garden over the last week or so, on and off after work /weekends etc and have made some more progress.

First i have laid roofing felt around the curve and as far as the boards go. ( this is about 6' from where the viaduct will start.)

I have now laid track accross the bridge and around the curve. I have also used a camber . This was done by placing a 10mm strip of roofing felt tucked under the outer rail and flush to the edge of the sleepers.

will post more pics as progress continues.

The next stage will be to fasten board "off cuts" to the section around the pond. Then put roofing felt on this.

The wire fence/mess is just a temporary measure to keep my little helper OFF the garden and from trashing the new plants. This will of course be removed once they have got themselves established.
