Guy's

What is your favourite class 37 I would go for 37401 I remember class 37/4's on the Sleeper trains from the mid 90's until mid 2000's 401 was a regular and I have been on a few railtours with 401 as well and glad she has been saved.

Mention must also go to 37099 and 37403.

37003 was my favourite; had some fantastic runs, Scarbough - Newcastle extended to Glasgow in 1986 being one of several occasions when it had worked off Botanic Gardens (ECS went Hull-Scarboro in 86 for that train). Last trip before withdrawl was Aberdeen-Montrose in 88 which was also very memorable. Shame it's power unit gave up the ghost, think it has 73's now installed.

37011 probably ended up being my fave Scottish based loco, again in 86 quite a few runs when 37/4s had some issues that meant a short term return to steam heat locos. The most memorable day was the £5 go anywhere day in October 86 when we spent the day on the old girl doing QSt-Aberdeen-Edinburgh and then Edinburgh-Aberdeen & return vice HST! Quite some day, even the Fort Bill sleepers had a relief that day - 37004 was heading down the tunnels as we were powering up, much to our suprise. Shame 11 came to a premature end.

37240 was probably the loco in the early 90s, seemed to turn up just about every day when I was North of the border for the usual fortnight freedom in the summer. Highlight working was the internal overnight Inverness-QSt as far as Perth, might have helped we'd been supping Orkney Skullsplitter in Aberdeen earlier in the evening!

D6704 as delivered. Plain green no yellow panels. And on my shed door is an IH electrification plaque that was ...liberated....back in the day.

And of course it was named around then as well.

Obvious one for me, 075 as I spent 10 years helping look after it!

Fond memories of 025 both on the Kyle line and towards the end Dragging HST's over the Devon banks.

Though rather than specific engines, any tractor over the Devon banks, but not on Charters, would have to be last minute rescues!

Looking through all my photos probably the 1 that stands out is 37263 on 27th July 1986 aged 17 and about to start a Freedom of Scotland the next day. We had just returned to Carlisle from doing the Class 20's on the Wigan - Preston Drags when the Gen was 37263 was coming down from Glasgow with 1M56 1445 Glasgow - Carlisle and would return on 1S88 19:20 Carlisle to Glasgow Central (SUN) so it was a Car to Annan where we purchased our Freedoms and started a Day early having the 37 from Annan to Carlisle then all the way to Glasgow Central.

37263 stands at Carlisle on Sunday 27th July 1986

If it were a Favourite Day on Class 37's that would be easy the 5th July 1986.

Living in Carlisle the Gen was 37131 was coming down from Glasgow with 1M01 0740 Glasgow - Carlisle so off to Dumfries to meet that and while on that some more Gen of 37168 planned to work an additional 1E97 1040 Edinburgh - London Kings Cross (relief) Between Edinburgh - Doncaster. Remember this was before the age of the Internet or Mobile phones but there were alot of Railway men with insider knowledge.... So the plan was a car to Newcastle to do that to York. I remember the timings were a bit tight to get to Newcastle but we made it 2nd 37 in the bag shortly after arriving at York in rolled 37052+37001 on 1Z61 The Deltic Silver Jubilee railtour from Kings Cross to Malton having spoken to the DPS stewards they let us join to Malton for a suitable donation to the DPS and another 2 sorted. 37 hauled from Dumfries to Malton (with a Car in between) Great day...

  • RMweb Gold

I always select my models based on prototype memories, so sort of "favourites".

37 070 cabbed at Bath Road with my grandfather who used to work there.

37 086 I was allowed to apply the power handle by a BR driver in Cambridge depot- about as much fun as a teenager could have in the 1970s ;)

37 159 one of the South Wales RCH batch, one of the first 37s I saw when my Dad took me to Filton Junction on one of my first spotting forays, Summer 1974.( No I haven't (yet) modified the cantrail grilles as per RCH differences)

Any of the original "37/3ers" for memories of those awesome triple headed Llanwern trains of the Late 1970s.

LOL!

Dangerous territory this is  :jester:

So much potential for elitism - fortunately I don't think there are many of the pre-ETH tractor-bashers here as RMWeb members!

Oh I don't know Chard, there are still some of us about ;)

emm so many to choose from but.........................................it has to be...........

Remember enjoying 260, and sisters Caithness and Dounreay on the Far North in summer '84.  I guess many 37 people's favourites would include the machines at the far flung Inverness outpost.  And the split-box Lochs over on the West Highland...
