The only metalwork left now are the brake levers, additions since last post; louvre vents, door handles, brake pipes, emergancy brake rodding finished, hook plates and buffer stocks. I was about to fit the copperclad footboards but ive left my solder and flux at the club

Got my stuff back Friday night and got on with some soldering yesterday, getting the footboards on and putting the brake gear together. as you can see its being painted, im going to try get a good match for LSW goods brown, this is 2 coats of Railmatch sleeper grime which is a bit dark but ive got a chocolaty Tamiya (X-9) to go on top, that should look about right

This is fantastic! The closer you get the better it looks. Very impressed.

I went and asked elsewhere about painting a lettering this, it should be a much darker passenger brown rather than goods and i got an example model for the lettering

https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/166590-lswr-horsebox-lettering/

and then the other day i found a much better quality drawing which of course only found after building mine

https://www.scalefour.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=7260&hilit=lswr+horse+box&sid=bbe7e147447a8c3fe2d96d33abaad421

Buffers, couplings, glazing and roof done, theres just the lettering and weight to do. The painting is a custom mix of acrylics protected by the usual coat of matt varnish, the chassis was weathered with a thinned sleeper grime wash

i was just looking at Middleton's website since some coming events of interest had been mentioned to me and what do i see on their events page, my Deffors being used as the thumbnail for the model weekends, a pleasant surprise

What day(s) are you exhibiting, Sam?

going back to the chassis for a second, this was built up with Mortis & Tenon joints. You may ask whats the point since they wont be seen, they lock the parts together without relying on glue. This worked out some time after fitting the 2 brass stay rods (as shown in the first photo), the glue broke on one of the end stretcher timbers and it came loose but it couldnt fall out so i just wedged to gap in the mortis with a splinter

on the underside is a brass sheet with hornguides to solder in axle bushes. Also better shown here are the 2 stay rods which are fixed in by soldering little brass square on either end to look like nuts, the same was done with the coupling loops

Back to the build, most of the parts i had made for the body had to be scrapped and re made for various reasons except for the side and end planking

and sat on the chassis propped by an off cut

in unrelated news, one of my still un finished carriages has been de commisioned intoo a grounded body. the chassis was cut off and replaced with timber, eventually some of the windows will be boarded up and tarp on the roof. I think ive mentioned before that ive lost interest in carriages and never got around finishing any of them

  • 2 weeks later...

ive not done much home modelling for a while apart from doing drawing work for future projects on the computer but back in with something

remotored Dapol pug which i plan to put a Bagnall on it half inspired by the ones that Giles built, ive got a good set of drawings

a club friend has got into 3D printing this year and is doing various commissions for friends and stuff for himself of course, BRM readers will have now seen his 80T Warwells, ive asked to try the cow catchers for my BR Hunslet which will save me having to cut and solder a load of brass strip, here is the first printed out and sat against my model, ive also asked for the radiator grill, mine looks okay from a distance but its crap

The pug conversion continues, the motor mounting had to be altered to fit under the body when built, the plug is moved to the side to hide in the bunker instead of sticking out of the front of the firebox, again once built. The chassis extensions have some thin sheet stuck over the sides to hide the joins

Replaced the overly chunky keep plate, all the motion is being re used just with the con rods being modified; drilled out the rivet on the small end that ran as a pseudo cross head and filed down the rod profile to be slimmer, the coupling rods will be re used without any change.

ups, downs and a bit of burning.

i was soldering on the end plates to the cylinders but the heat needed made them drop off the mounting frame, while trying to fix this one of them fell apart, since the blocks are not whole but 3 layers of 3mm, photo below of one of the cylinders which spat out of the pliers into bits

got it back together with some aluminium in the holes which dont get stuck by the solder, but now i'm having difficulty getting them back on the frame and staying on
