Another visit to the Severn Valley Railway today.  All photos were taken on 12th April 1980.

And this is the loco servicing area at Bewdley with 5164 just leaving.  I was a volunteer at that time and must have shovelled out tons of ash and clinker from that pit.

No it wasn't that crane, Chris - it was the Loco Dept. breakdown crane that used to spend most of its time in the 'dump' sidings that formed part of the stabling point, leading up towards the North Box and Mill Road bridge.  Will look up the details later, but think it was the kind of Cowans Sheldon crane that the old Hornby Dublo model was based on.  The one in your picture looks like the Civil Engineer's steam crane that was used in remodelling the track layout prior to the new signalling system being introduced.  Interesting picture in other ways too - you can see the end of a steel carrying bogie wagon in the Coalfields yard as a reminder of when steel coil was a regular inward traffic for a fairly short time; not sure whether this was in connection with some specific building or construction job locally, or quite why it happened?

Moving on to Norwich here we have typical summer crowds, probably waiting to board a Great Yarmouth service.  Best to avoid these trains on summer Saturdays!

The old cattle docks provided an unusual viewpoint for freight activity at Cambridge, at that time, if you went right round there.  Once we spent most of the school lunch hour watching the breakdown crane retailing an 08 in that area.  There were several dead end sidings that came up to the cattle docks as I recall; at one time in the mid '70s they contained a lot of Transfesa vans that seemed to be stored there for some reason!

It's worth seeking out the Paul Shannon 'Railfreight Since 1988- Wagonload' volume, which goes into some detail about traffic flows around Cambridge; there've been some pretty odd loads sent and received from there.

Thanks Brian, I don't have that book but may have a look for it.  There certainly was some interesting traffic dealt with there; it wasn't unknown for a convoy of military vehicles to be making their way down Station Road, having been unloaded from 'Warflats' etc.  Almost unrecognisable today, sadly!

Thanks Keefer - loads isn't there?  I'd forgotten about the two preserved BR non-ganwayed coaches which were in the Fyffes warehouse siding (near Brooklands Avenue) for a while.

What wonderful pictures. I have many happy childhood memories of Steamtown Carnforth, I think my parents have a picture of me standing in front of Mallard there when it was in steam in the 80's.

Thanks for sharing and keep them coming. Do you have any pictures of Oxenholme back then or Windermere?

47587 looks like it is going over a 'hump'. This surely isn't the case, but that road is certainly artifically raised for a reason, any one know why?

This won't win any prizes.  Littleport on a dismal evening in April 1979 (and looks like something went wrong during processing), but at least it shows the waiting shelter before it burned down.

Nice photo of Littleport, things don't change much out here, Apart from the signals and telegraph poles (and the modern version of the waiting shelters) nothing much has changed.

 

The thing that sticks out the most is that gate in the fence, There was one on the up side just over the underpass too. I've just done the gates and it appears that the gate has just been replaced with lenghtened tubes.

 

13 years, you managed to last that long? The only nice place that I've found is the box!

With the introduction of the Norwich to to Cambridge service by Anglia Railways and the extension of the Anglia Day Ranger to Ely and Cambridge I have been a keen user of that ticket.  Whilst the price has risen over the years I still regard it as good value for money and use it whenever I have a spare Saturday.

On 17th February 2007 170272 forms the Cambridge to Norwich leg of an early morning service.

One of my favorite stations is Ipswich; there always seems to be something going on.  Still on 17th February, this is a general view of the station.

A couple of years earlier on 19th November 2005 this is the loco yard at Ipswich.

Travelling up the East Suffolk Line to Lowestoft we have 170204 and 170205 forming Norwich and Ipswich services respectively.  I loved it when these units were used on the Norwich trains as those trains were designated standard class only and you could travel in first class with a ranger ticket.

I don't follow steam specials particularly so it is always a thrill to turn up at a station to find an unexpected steam locomotive in the platform.  This is "West Country" 34067 "Tangmere" and 90013 at Norwich on 5th May 2007.

Yes, with the passing of time, I was puzzled by the gate when I looked at the scan - it just seems to open on to an embankment.

That brick building is now just a collection of bricks about waist height, and there is that much greenery that the view of the station from the approach road is almost impossible.

On 18th October 2008 the Railway Study Association organised a visit to the LT Museum at Acton.  These photos give a flavour of the exhibits.  There are no captions as I'm not too sure of the designations of LT stock so if someone wishes to provide some details the please do so.

Nice to see Acton Depot looking so empty!  When I've been there on Open Days, I must have spent hours waiting for people-free shots of the various exhibits.

 

ESL 107 is the last surviving tube gauge Electric Sleet Locomotive, which was used to keep the conductor rails clear of ice.  It was one of a batch converted during the 1930s from motor cars built for the Central London Railway right back in 1903/4.

 

The Bakerloo "red train" is comprised of "1938 stock" - built in 1938!

 

Excuse me, but DoS is sooo not right at Kings Cross.

It wasn't open to the public that day as I recall hence no crowds.  This is a shot I meant to post before I became confused.
