Class 31 Photos

A couple from June 16th 1978 at Peterborough. Entering the station with 1E80, 16.40 Birmingham New St. - Norwich is 31244/ D5672, one of the handful with the tablet catcher recess for High Dyke, still visible towards the back of the loco. Also an unidentified member of the class with Presflos leaving the yard - I wondered if the white dusting meant they might have been used on the cement traffic from Ketton.

The second photo shows that this 31 still had its nose doors, not plated over like the first one.

There was a brief period during the early Tops era when a small number of 31s carried 31/0 numbers before being converted to eth fitted 31/4s, one example being 31 140 which only carried this number from March to November '74 before becoming 31 421, here it is at Gateshead on 5th April 1974, photo by Russell Saxton....

Seeing this picture with gangway doors still present not sure if the bellows were still fitted by this time .

I know they were very rarely used but I wonder when the last time they were used, was there ever a notice issued saying they were not to be used.

I believe in preservation only the Co-Bo still has them fitted

Nice to see 5518, there isn't many unrefurbrished 31s in preservation

I had a work job to the Avon Valley Railway (hence the coach in one of the pics) but I’m not too up on my 31s...

Some visiting class 31 action from the Keighley and Worth Valley... this would have been the 2014 diesel gala but I cannot remember which line it was visiting from.

Leaving Oxenhope on the Friday I think (we had our middle-foster daughter off school with a broken leg, and took her up to Oxenhope for a picnic to watch the trains).

It looked good in the experimental livery... but not nearly as good (in my opinion) as;

Visiting from the Chinnor line for the 2019 gala.  Seen as tail-end-Charlie on the very distinctive convoy; Class 50, class 47, prototype HST and carriages, and the 31.  Bingley Station.

Near Damems.  I really took to this loco, having not really been a fan of 31's before, and would still quite like a model of it at some point.

One final oddity;  March 2010 at Ribblehead/Blea Moor

I'm afraid I don't have any details on the working, as these were the days before RTT (not that there's internet signal up there anyway), I was just out for a walk one weekday and it tootled past out of the gloom.

I didn’t see the 31s arriving until it was almost too late so this is a bit of a grabbed shot to try to get the departing 33 in as well. The platform end would have afforded a better shot but there were some big boys already there :sad_mini:
31230 and 31414 arrive at Bristol Temple Meads whilst in the background, 33025 heads off towards Cardiff with a train from Portsmouth. September 6th 1986.

Sad memories of these locos, the very last train I saw on the GC at New Basford before closure was a Stanton Ironworks double headed by 31s and the last train I saw on the Boston-Spalding line was 2 of them running light.

Funny how childhood memories can stick!
