60021 Pen-y-Ghent
Some double-headed 31s around Skipton and the S&C: If I'm reading my notes correctly this shows 31446 & 31407 drawing into Skipton, presumably on a Carlisle-Leeds turn, 25th March 1989. I think it's the same pair heading back north later the same day, approaching Helwith Bridge. Passing Helwith Bridge with Pen-y-ghent in the background. This was a WCML shutdown weekend and here I think are 31442 and 31467 coming off Ribblehead viaduct with Ingleborough in view.

Busmansholiday
For two years my regular commute home was a 31/4 on the Cleethorpes to Liverpool. It was on time twice, on both occasions because it was replaced by a 47. I took one picture, this one in March 1987 at Scunthorpe, if only you could go back in time.

Evidently it wasn't a success so HSTs were drafted in for the summer extras.

Steadfast
31s seem the ideal loco for preserved lines - lots of noise and smoke for not a lot of speed! I live close enough to the Avon Valley Railway that shots like this can be grabbed in passing (including a visit to the station cafe for cake on occasion too of course), and they were running the 31 for the first few weekends of post lockdown running. These were taken on the second weekend of operations, on the Saturday and Sunday, first train of each day. There's a couple more pics on Flickr, clicking the pictures will take you there. A noisy departure! by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr In it's post Covid-19 operating season, the Avon Valley Railway is running 4 Mk1s with a 31 hauling on Saturdays and Sundays. Making a racket and laying down a smoke screen, 31130 heads north from Bitton with the 11.30 first train of the day. The service would head up to Oldland, run round and head back shortly after. Waiting time at Oldland by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr Having run round its train, 31130 sits waiting time at Oldland Common, heading for Avon Riverside and then back to Bitton. Taken from the Bath and Bristol cycle path, which shares the former Midland Railway trackbed with the Avon Valley Railway. Jo
