Class 31 Photos

Recommended Posts

A sample from the stash. Very common in our area back in 90’s. A regular Friday PM was 5 heading off on weekend engineering work with a return on Monday.

Generally to be found on oil workings but I did see only once (poor image) on passenger service at Grimsby.

First two images are undated & unidentified at Brocklesby when still had platform access.

Other two are further on up the line at Melton Ross

In my view the '31' was a natural recipient for this treatment as it had the required 'clearly defined recessed area around the cab side windows' (or words to that effect*) but the fact that the only example was a depot initiative - and a WR depot at that - speaks volumes about Doncaster's indifference to improving the look of these locos with minimal effort. I've never understood this but I suppose it's too late now to demand an explanation and apology!

Ah well, I've waffled on about this at least twice before so I'll zip it 🤐! I only saw 31135 like this once, at Bristol in 1984, and it cleared off light engine before I could get the camera out. A few years back a photo appeared in the back pages of 'TRACTION' showing it heading a westbound Speedlink service including china clay wagons near Dawlish Warren - a serious temptation, I didn't have an excuse for a model at the time, I do now - resisted so far but every time pictures like these go up I find myself scouring eBay for Lima 31283s........!

*IIRC an article in 'TRACTION' issue 90 refers......

It was done in the Factory at Old Oak as a homage to the last few Hymeks which clung on at 81A into 1975, one of the painters involved was ex-Swindon Works. I drove it a few times in '83 and '84 and it was one of the better examples. Here's the paintjob being applied on 4/4/82...

Aarrgghh no, another photo, stop it 😁! Nice to see though, a 31 celebrity in the making!

I used to visit OOC quite often in the early 1970s and photographed 7017 and 7018 'out front' in early February 1975, with just weeks to go - little did I know how things were going to work out for those two.......
