Classmates 31601 and 31271 make a handsome looking pair as they travel through Kimberley with the 1420 Dereham to Wymondham Abbey services on the 27/03/15.

Some excellent photos there drgi,

I have been inspired to dig out some more of mine.

This one is still a mystery. It looks GN&GE but someone suggested the small signalbox was SR. Certainly the headcode suggests an inter-regional special, and in the days before syp it could be anything, really.  There seems to be a lot of point rodding for such a small box, and the number of telegraph wires suggests a more important route than might be imagined at first.

These are at Immingham  - 31195 and 31196

And this is 31260 at Southampton, presumably on a Cardiff - Portsmouth working.

It's been a while since anything was posted in this thread, but I've got some pics to add, so why not..

Apologies for already posting this pic in the class 37 thread, but 31 296 at Buxton.

image.jpg

31 143 at Manchester Piccadilly with a short parcels working.

image.jpg

Buxton again? Surely not...31 180 and un-identified Immingham friend..

image.jpg

No idea....

Well the scrawled inscription on the back of the print says Peterborough 1989, so somewhere in the East between 1988 and 1991!  :sarcastichand:

31pboro.jpg

Same back of the pic inscription, but this time its 31 187 with some engineers wagons.

A few random class 31s from around the network, I don't think have been seen before.

31xxx at Bedminster heading west on the Down Main, judging from the lack of cleanliness this was probably a Bath Road allocated loco, 11/2/80

And this is a long time Bath Road allocated loco, complete with dirt!

31210 stabled on the Column Road at Hallen Marsh while on local freight trip duty, 5/2/81

Thanks. I assume you have record of class 31 repaints? If it is 31280 then the photo was taken on 27th March 1986, that's the only record I can find of me seeing 31280 stabled at Taunton.

Yes, I used the overhaul date which is painted on the right lower front side of the yellow warning panel. The only 31/1 to escape Doncaster in Sept 1983 after overhaul was 31280, the rest were being converted to 31/4s at the time.

31s seem to have gotten through a large number of Liveries! The ones that intrigue me though is the few that ended up in intercity livery. The reggie rail ones make sense to me (although half the pictures of them still seem to be on freight) and a lot of the cross country services using 31s seem to have railfreight or Dutch liveries when they started replacing rail blue. So what was the intention of the intercity liveried Machines? Was there a regular intercity diagram somewhere that needed an ic 31 rather than an ic 47 and I've just Missed it?

In the late 80s there was a regular 31 diagram involving the 1106 New Street to Reading followed by the 1334 Reading to Manchester. Never saw an InterCity/Mainline loco on it though. Here's a couple of shots. The first one is 31414 at Didcot East with the up train (16/11/89) and the second (undated) one is the down train leaving Reading with 31423 (+nutter) at the front.

IIRC the photo above has appeared before, the animated bloke in the photo apparently being BR staff of some sort too...

Oops, my apologies! You are quite right; I have posted that picture before (albeit in a different thread). He was well known in the class 37 bashing fraternity and he would often carry a trumpet with him whilst out and about and blast out a fanfare from the droplight window.
