While researching miscellaneous road vehicles in the Carlisle area I came across this https://www.flickr.com/photos/blackwatch55013/5532721576/sizes/l

Carlisle PSB with a PC in front, I zoomed in a little and it doesn't look like a Cargo or a Roadrunner to me because of cab and window shape, it appears to have a long quarter-light which suggests terrier or dodge and 1990 is surely too late for a terrier.

I'm guessing there's no easy way to narrow down if it's one of the earlier or later Commandos (to figure out which RTI cab to buy).

I also noticed the crew body has a large side window where most (but not all) I've seen have two smaller, how unusual is this?

Even if the resolution were there there seems to be an inconveniently positioned bush hiding the front panel, which is where the difference is. One thing that is noticeable though is the body on the back has a flat roof, which is characteristic of later builds. Now whether that exactly coincides with the change in the cab I don't know, but others might.

Having had a good look through the British Rail Road Vehicles group on flickr the cab change from Commer to Dodge G happened in the early 1980's. There are pictures of the Dodge G08 with curved roof cabins up to B reg (1984/5). The flat roof appears on Leyland Roadrunners on a C plate (1985/6). There were some pictures of Dodge G08s with the flat roof on E plates (1987/8). The vheicles on G plates (1989/90) showed a change in style with the Dodge name gone, a grille between the headlights similar to the old Commando one, and a full width grille above this with the Renault diamond in the centre.

The photograph you looked at was taken in September 1988, according to blackwatch55013's flickr page, so the the Dodge G08 cab from RTI (DOD5) is the one you need.

In the process of producing a  BR Escort Mk 4 Combi Van in 1/76 scale using 2 escort XR3i donor models, will swap the wheels with a Cortina model I have as these are clearly XR3i wheels which it would not have had fitted.

The tailgate on the estate shouldn't be as steeply sloped as the hatch version. There's a good set of drawing here. Though the estate drawn is the later 4 door version, the rear is the same as the two door version. Also note the tail lights are quite different; more upright so the tailgate opens to floor level.

Here's the outline of the two back sections overlaid:EscortHatchEstateComparison.jpg.81b8ad3eac89faaf992fea7c1ffd7c05.jpg

Bernard, thanks I had spotted the difference on the tail lights which are a lot narrower thanks for the mark up i will see what I can do to the tailgate without  having to start over again

In theory the estate tailgate pillar fits within the hatch one which is broader, see below (estate pillar overlai on hatch pillar, lower rear corner of window lined up). The diecast metal is a hard job to file though; I know that from the Mk.2 Cortina improvements.

Swapped the XR3i wheels from a basic set with hub cabs from a mk3 Cortina GT, decided to customise the cortina with spare parts from the XR3i, used photos from google for the interior colours

Escort Combi Van is now finished (well apart from adding the rear windscreen wiper). After it was pointed out that the tailgate was incorrect I adding an additional roof section in place which moved the rear tailgate back into the correct position and angle. Unfortunately the rear window was too long with the increased angle so this was cut off using a piercing saw and anew tailgate formed from plasticard. It became a bit like Frankenstein monster made from many parts but I am pleased with the overall result. The seat fabric and door panels on the real vehicle were photographed and printed out as transfers applied to the model.
